View Full Version : Alternatives to Library.nu

I have been a happy user of library.nu for more than 3 years now
and i loved their content and their cyberlocker model

Now that Library.nu(Formerly Gigapedia) is down/not available to normal users like me,(donors and higher classed members can access the site)
i would like to know if there are any alternatives to it?

have you tried some ebook trackers like bibliotik?

btw, I have no idea how library nu grew in the past few years, but I use to use it for free without sign ups back in the days, and I wasn't too impressed.

thanks for the recommendations guys
but i am looking for alternatives which have nothing to do with torrenting

ebook torrents as we all know tend to die off, are not at all exhaustive, and are a bitch to seed back owing to the small file size

due to this warez sites like library.nu/avaxhome (ebookee,ebook30...) are much better suited for me
so please recommend me sites which follow the same model as library.nu and are as exhaustive in content as library.nu was

I have not tried IRC for books (or anything else for that matter) but intend to - it's been suggested to me to try, for novels:

Server: Undernet
Channel: #Bookz

Server: IRCHighway
Channel: #ebooks

Warez-bb (they have a 'Fiction ebooks zone' under their ebooks thread)
http://www.warez-bb.org/

http://forum.mobilism.org/index.php
have an ebooks section

and http://www.freebookspot.es/Default.aspx

I haven't had a good look at the last two, but they're worth trying.

BookFinder, linked above, and Library Genesis ( http://gen.lib.rus.ec ) come the closest to making up for the loss of lnu content, of what I've seen.

Any tutorial to share about how to use irc for downloading books?

adeey

Try these:

http://www.calvinshub.com/2008/11/how-to-download-e-books-from-mirc/

http://encyclopediadramatica.ch/Bookz

I did (successfully!) follow the instructions in the first link, but I found a couple of things were slightly different - I think perhaps it might be using an older version of MIRC than what I had. I can't remember what exactly was different ... it was all a little much for me towards the end and I got brain freeze  ..... but it couldn't have been too different as I DID manage to download a book.

If you find any further guides or tutorials that are good it would be great if you could post them here.:yup:

thanks for the link mate,
it was very informative,
i will try out the IRC method tomorrow,

but just one question, since IRC DLing is P2P model, are you obliged to "seed back"(irc analogue) in any way?
or is it completely voluntary to be sharing (or not)?

And LazyGuy, no there's no seeding. You just download and you're done. Pretty great.

Library.nu shut down and sustitutes

I just heard that 17 publishers including Oxford University Press and Elsevier managed to get a German court shut down Library.nu and ifile.it.

I have been a registered user and donator of Library.nu for a long time. I am regretful and angry about this event. Like some people said, it is pretty much like the burning down of Library of Alexandria.

I feel like I need to do something about it. The greedy international publishers are stripping off my poor fellow third world young people's right to access modern academic knowledge.

Here I listed all the ebook site bookmarks in my browser. They can be good substitutes for Library.nu. My personal recommendation is Russian site Library Genesis. The number of books is even greater than that of Library.nu.(Face palm to Elsevier.) Please spread this, tell as many people as you can.
