View Full Version : Does my Internet company support Usenet?

I have some questions about the newsgroups?

1.) I believe my Internet supports it, but I'm not sure how recent, or old the information was. The one week I plugged the news server into GrabIt without the username and password. I get errors like always. Could it be that I didn't fill in the username and password? If so, I have Service Electric. Where could I find all that information to make it work?

2.) Would there be any NZB sites that gets into movies/music/other categories, but for free with unlimited downloading?

3.) What free news client does everyone use? I'm looking for recommendations as for free.

That's all my questions for now. Thank you!

For a client use SABNzbd.

I'd try to look around on your ISP's support page. One of their selling points for their plans is 10 gigs of Usenet a month. They may be using giganews as their provider. You can also get a free account at http://xsusenet.com/ but the retention is low and the speed is limited.

For NZBs, I'd look at kere.ws and nzb.su basically the same, but nzb.su has a 10 nzb a day limit. Mysterbin is good for raw searches.

Hi cola,

I don't have anyway of paying for this. I'm a torrent user, and I was looking into NZB's either as an alternative, or possibily more toward that direction. I don't want a slow download connection, but if I had that choice I rather take the slow, and get an unlimited retention. The things I would be looking at is finding it on an NZB index site. Let's say a movie, and then load that movie into the client. There are will be a few problems I will run into.

1.) I tried testing it with GrabIt, and I got a 480 error. I'm not sure if it will work with all clients.

2.) On an indexing site, the files are split up, and I'm not sure what to check to download. Like 01 of this. I think it's nzbsearch.info. There are sites where it's a full NZB file, but they may either be a paid registration. Or rentition registration. I don't know how to use those index sites. I don't know how to fix that 480 error either.

Don't know if your provider ditched the binary groups like most ISP's did but you will probably need your email password and user name to login to the news server.

News server address is: usenet.ptd.net (resolves to Giganews)

user name: [email protected]

password: email password
