Blue Gate.
OK, five posts...you're halfway there.
Hydrate, rest up, gather your strength for the final push to ten posts and the paradise that is the trade section will be revealed to you.

It's only fair to warn you that Manker has already despoiled all the virgins there, so if that was the payoff you sought it will be a bittersweet achievement.

Life is like that.

manker
07-03-2012, 02:19 PM
That's the thing I like about the bittard section - the conveyor belt of virgins.
I exist in a constant state of sate.

Btw, I already deleted a few of his more inane offerings but he was relentless so I decided to do something easier.

clocker
07-03-2012, 02:26 PM
I think this board's priorities are backwards.
Should allow new posters to ONLY post in the bittard section before being allowed to roam the rest of the forum.

manker

Yes, but then they might never come out of there and post in all the different sections ... .

Ah, it's no big deal. You're probably a very nice chap who just so happens to be in a rush to download some anime or whatever.
The fact you returned to see the reaction to your posts actually sets you apart.

Feel free to remain hereabouts to talk about virgins or conservatives or milfs on Skype or whatever the threads are about today.

IdolEyes787

I think this board's priorities are backwards.
Should allow new posters to ONLY post in the bittard section before being allowed to roam the rest of the forum.

I suggested that and if you ever stuck your head out of the "Other Discussions" part of the bored you'd know that.

Btw it was decided that the idea would be put to a vote to the general membership but it ended in a 0-0 stalemate.

The good news is that somebody ended getting into some HD site where they speak Chinese so they could download a bunch of movies that they will never watch.

I liked First Blood by the way, if they had left it at that it would be fine but no, let's fuck it up and make it ever more highly improbable sequels with even less point but more explosions and a higher body count, yay. :slap:

clocker

Sorry, I was being disingenuous.
Obviously, all Sylvester Stallone movies are utter crap since they're all predicated on the conceit that Stallone is more than subhuman, a demonstrably false assumption.
Sly thought Rise of the Planet of the Apes was autobiographical.

Not that there's anything wrong with aiming entertainment directly at the brainstem, both Fox News and Charlie Sheen have proven the efficacy of the approach.

You're a very silly person and obviously A Night to Remember.

All fine and good except the year is also wrong, the film adaption of Walter Lord's book a Night to Remember was released in 1958, not 1953. So apart from having the title of the movie and the year it was released wrong the rest of the sentence is perfectly fine.

You are correct, A Night to Remember is a far better film than Titanic (1953) which is filled with some rather hilarious inconsistencies including which side the iceberg struck on! I was confused when you quoted A Night to Remember as Titanic, but such is life pass me the silly hat.

It may not be the worst movie ever, but I feel it is my duty to warn folks about the movie "Killing Them Softly (2012)" with Brad Pitt. Please do not devote a part of your life to this film as it is utter crap. Perhaps I'm devoid of intellect, or missed some super special moments, but for me I struggled through to the end and was left empty. On a positive note, at least it helped me get to sleep. I see people giving this 10/10 on imdb, gotta wonder who is really writing some of those reviews.

Blues Brothers 2000 (1998)

I came across this steaming turd of a movie a few weeks ago, & unfortunately took the time to watch it. If you ever have an urge to watch this cataclysmically bad pile of rat droppings, do yourself a favor & smash yourself in the face with an iron skillet instead. It will be more entertaining & leave you with better memories.

If John Belushi's corps is flopping around in it's grave right now, it's not from the cocaine residue...It's because of this POS.

Crossover was most memorable for me. I remember seeing it and laughing at the absurdness of it all. I wouldn't say that the Fast and the Furious movies are the worst. I've admittedly only seen the first one. It don't think they are good enough to have made more than one though. Went to the movies last night and was surprised to see that they had another one out (in theaters!) and are making another one. Yeah!

While it's not a masterpiece, I wouldn't put Terminator 3 in the same class with worst movies of all time. I reserve that category for movies such as Battlefield Earth (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0R_FR9pD2k). I'm surprised Travolta didn't get kicked out of the Scientology Clubhouse for that one. My vote for worst is Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning. I'm not saying the preceding ones were masterpieces or anything, but this one had only the slightest relation to the previous movies. I have friends that have viewing parties for that flick. Still haven't seen it.

There's a number of fan theories about what the movie's events are supposed to represent. All of them make more sense than taking it at face value.

Oh man, seriously awful movie. The suspense during the initial part of the movie was fine, and then they revealed what is really causing people to die. I won't spoil it here for those fortunate enough to not have seen it yet, but it was supremely idiotic.

All of this hating on The Room. It is a terrible movie, yes, but genuinely entertaining.

The thing that humors me most about the film is that Tommy Wiseau wrote, directed, and produced it. This was his passionate dream. He somehow came up with $6 Million to make this a reality. This was not someone else's bad idea that he was paid to create.

He also exudes such a strange negative, creepy charisma that it's kinda hard to not watch him. Freaky.

Random capitalization tells me something here. What that is I'm just not sure but it's clearly tied to some sort of FST trend.

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance was far worse and A History of Violence was only 87% favourable on Rotten Tomatoes so clearly it's no Shawshank Redemption.

You can't say that one of the greatest movies of all time is the worst.
As far as sci-fi goes about only Metropolis,2001:A Space Odyssey and maybe the original The Day the Earth Stood Still garner such universal praise.

You can say you don't like it but not that it's bad.

Because that would be stupid and you're not stupid,I hope.

Btw this thread defines off topic if you look at the original post.
....................................................................................................................
This is what I like best about this forum. You can speak directly to a person and they don't answer you.

Anyway in my opinion what separates truly great movies from merely entertaining ones is that the truly great movies both entertain you but also challenge you and make you think.
That's why even though I consider Aliens to be top two or three best action films ever,in the greater scheme of things it can't hold a candle to those other films.

And so I once again cast my words into the black pit that is this place.

The film plays with a time and setting where artificial life is not only inexpensive, but is valued as less than "real" life. When a small number of androids escape from a work facility, it is the job of Detective Drekker to track them down and destroy them. It turns out that all these beings want is to be allowed to continue living- that is why they were acting violently in the first place. Once the escapees have been destroyed, what remains is to determine if all of the androids had been caught, and how much life they would have left...

Where as the original http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070917/ from 1973 is considered one of the classic horrors of British cinema (and I heartily agree). Slow exposition, like brick by brick being immured alive(Poe:) ) or in one word "dread".
There used to be a ton of it in the best horror movies like Rosemary's Baby and The Exorcist and bad situations weren't completely owing to people being stupid which made things seem far worse as evil was demonstratively more inexorable.

Unlike the promiscuous couple basically sealing their own fate, back when horror movies could still surprise you,no amount of careful planning nor good intent prevented someone from becoming a victim.

Btw The Wicker Man remake is truly godawful, not that the person who spam posted it cares.

Hmmmm.... we both keep harkening back to a time gone by, when actors had to you know, act in a movie. I have always enjoyed the suspense 'horror' movies far more than the toby gruntsplatter slashfests which seem to infest the screen these days. The original Wicker Man, Rosemary's Baby and The Exorcist still reign as some of the greatest of all times along with Sam Peckinpah's Straw Dogs. The slow building of a feeling that all is not right, and the dawning of dread in the actors, building to a crescendo is what made a great suspense film. These days unfortunately the plot is too often telegraphed early on in the script, leaving little surprise or suspense to be had. To compensate for hiring monkeys as writers, the studios seem to counterbalance these inane scripts with ever more gory deaths and higher body counts, transposing true horror for splatter, and cinema is the poorer for it.

Honest point here, but I strongly suspect movies are being made for those with short attention spans/ADHD. I seem to suffer from this more than you and Idol. There are only so many pre-80's movies I can sit through. Those tend to be the well-known greats, usually with more flow to them.

Most of the older shows require a bit of a connoisseur's taste. An educated palate regarding scene, lighting, mood, etc. Not a criticism, but an observation. If one does not know of the detailed work that went into a movie, they are not likely to recognize the finer details as they roll past. We are suffering from a lot of mega-budget fast food, being served up to an audience of ugly Americans.

That said, we do still get some amazing films, but they require effort on both the consuming and production ends of things.

No,you are just a mouth-breathing spastic,spastic.

Watch some of the "old" Hammer or Universal monster movies which while no one could possibly consider to be "Classics" still are infinitely more atmospheric, not to mention just plain fun then the insulting shit they are putting out nowadays.

Also name three "amazing" wide release movies made in the last 2 years and win a cigar or something.
Geez even the ones nominated for Oscars only achieve that status because they're serious "message" or foreign movies and the Hollywood types who need to think of themselves as being liberal( and not the coke snorting heathens they actually are ) feel they have to vote for them.

I personally enjoyed Her and American Hustle. I thought they were very well done. I personally don't watch too many movies but I'm sure if I tried hard enough I could find another one, you jaded fuck.

I'll step back from the standard of "amazing", but have made an attempt here to list movies from 2012- that made some sort of emotional connection with me:

The Conjuring
Walter Mitty
Prisoners
All is Lost
The Way, Way Back

Moonrise Kingdom (points subtracted for the unnecessary arrow through the puppy :ermm: )
Beasts of the Southern Wild
Looper
Cabin in the Woods
The Perks Of Being A Wallflower

Came close to putting Her on the list as well. :)

Also:

12 Years a Slave (Which shows how it is worse to be a free man, then spend 12 years as a slave, than it is to be a slave your entire life  )
The Hunt

Okay, discounting the fact that good isn't even what we're arguing aboot, amazing seems to have as much value nowadays as "awesome" or "superstar " or in the case of those televised singing competitions,"You have one of the best voices that I've ever heard".

So what was the 2 year period 30-40 years ago where there were far more "amazing" movies released than what there is now?

Not saying that the movies released nowadays are superior, but it clearly isn't some sort of dark age with only mindless drivel like Transformers.

Serious, thought-provoking question: Could Papillon be made today? Not a remake, but brand new (assuming there never was the 1973 version) with modern equipment, actors, lighting, etc.? How would the changes work for/against it? Are some of these films impossible to match for certain reasons (explain)?

Not knowing nearly enough about those movies you listed to judge there awesomeness level, I'll trust your opinion and concede to you that there were a lot of great movies made then.

I still think though there are quite enough "great" movies released in recent memory that there are still a lot of movies coming out that have more substance than you give them credit for.

I like to call this the "Shakespeare" effect. While the Shakespeare plays were brilliantly written plays in their own time, if we were wiped of our memory of them and someone released the exact same plot in present day, it would crash and burn due to all the painful cliches and predictable storytelling. Granted Shakespeare was probably the one to create those cliches in the first place with his masterful storytelling (for his time), but that doesn't make his work any more captivating in the present day, based on how storytelling has evolved since then, and thus our standards as well.

That's sort of what I think about (some, not all) of the older, more "classic" and "timeless" movies as well. Granted that they may have been genre defining movies in their time, I don't think they would stand up in present time if released in their current state. Sure, they may be amazing movies, and you can appreciate how brilliant the movie was (when it was released). But storytelling has evolved, just like everything else in the world. The classic, timeless movies and there plots have turned into cliches. Are we generally more prone to short attention spans and simpler movies than previous generations? Probably. But I think a bigger factor in why people such as you and me may not appreciate these movies as much is that they simply don't stand up to the modern standards of storytelling. Movie connoisseurs such as Idol appreciate the movies for their contribution to cinema as well as the actual movie, while we're just looking at it from the surface.

I think we also need to take into account that not all of the best actors, writers, directors, etc. are working exclusively in film these days. During the time Idol is discussing, there was very little talent draw away from films. If we include GoT, Breaking Bad, and all of the other great non-theater shows, we are certainly not in the same kind of drought that it seems like on occasion.

EDIT- Let's not gloss over the truly dreadful stuff that has come out during the "heyday", either...

So many words,so little sense.

Good is good and average is average ,end of story.

No wait,I've time traveled 300 years into the future and while Jimi Hendrix ,because of pure talent, is still considered a Rock legend, people cringe when names like Avincii come up.
"Modern standards":ermm:

Not knowing nearly enough about those movies you listed.

The Conversation is considered by some to be one of the greatest movies ever made and maybe Gene Hackman's finest performance but then in the same vein you have Eagle Eye with Shia LaBeouf and a bunch of special effects so I guess we rack this up as a tie.

The difference between then and now is that movies used to be about people and now they are, like your increasing souless World ,merely reflections of technology.
