Would You Buy Hp Or Compaq?
no.

i buy an intel notebook and put an AMD in it?
no.

depending on what you need it for, an HP or Compaq may be okay for you... but on the other hand you may end up finding out that you're getting screwed on something like the quality of the motherboard or audio/video, or that the Windows installation is bloated with useless junk that you don't want AND they don't give you a "vanilla" Windows CD to reinstall with (i.e. if you use their "restore" CDs, it just puts all the crap you don't want back into the hard drive).

the "you get what you pay for" rule kinda applies. if you buy cheap, you get cheap, and there's prolly gonna be something wrong with it that you don't notice until you really decide to start poking around in it. if you're going to buy HP or Compaq, i would recommend that you at least get hold of a pirated copy of Windows 2000 or Windows XP so that you can install a plain, unaltered copy of Windows when the pre-installed one inevitably goes haywire.

Geez, I thought HP had a merger with Compaq a few years ago. ;)

Historically, low price notebooks don't use mobile cpu. They're usually desktop chips. When I lived in Texas, my company will not buy AMD notebooks because of the extreme hot weather. We had some bad experiences. But for indoor and mild climate use, it should suffice. Tomshardware has a video of what happens when you remove the cpu fans. The AMD cpus were all destroyed along with some of the MBs. The intel chips just frozed but worked again when the fans were replaced.

yeah i have to agree, as much as i am a fan of AMD, for labtops i would go with the qaulity of a intel and the low power usage

(sumtimes my money tree isn't working, usually i just say to myself "why buy crapp that i "need" now when it will break down in a month or two and i have to buy a new one, while i could have saved up and bought the nicer one..."

your choice, but i would go P4(also known as P$ hehehe look at your keyboard) :P for a labtop...

however if you are truly money tight then try out the new e-machine labtops, really cheap, pretty nice qaulity...

ok, scimanal, weve had this discussion before: im not the emachine type

someone mayve told me before, but what can you upgrade on an hp/compaq/ or any other notebook

p.s.: i live in georgia and i would barely use it outside, im looking towards using i in my bed,on the couch, in the car, etc. id only use it outside unless it was a real nice day.

im getting an AMD because of low price and how i know thety can go fast. it will only be a 2500+

i dont want to get an intel because i dont want a celeron since im strapt for cash. if there is a huge drop when the 3.4 extreme edition comes out i may reconsider

I don't know about compaq but as for an HP, well they're good but, just pray you don't run into a problem or something, they're help and support areas suck

i have to add this is not true, i have a compaq laptop, and sure the restore cvd putrs extra stuff on the laptop, btu its only drivers, and other apps to do witht the laptop, but i also got a windows cd aswell, without all the stuff on it, and a seperate drivers cd. i am totally happy with my compaq laptop.

athlon 1500, 320mb ram, 20gb hdd, and nothing went wrong.

if they've changed their practices, that's great. the one time i bought a compaq, it did not have a Windows cd, and none of my friends who owned compaqs ever had windows cds. the restore cds came with utter garbage pre-installed, and littered the desktop with links to ISPs and whatnot (i.e. advertisments). this was pre-merger, though, and the only thing worse than a compaq Windows installation was an eMachines one.

thanks, im just trying to get different opinionshere is what im looking to buy (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=1063225034960&skuId=6028773&type=product)

3RA1N1AC:same thing with me, before they merged i got a presario and it screwed up. we had to get thwe restore cd and its pretty much the same story. windows was preinstalled and everything

my mom has an old(around '97-'99) pavilon. she has crappy specs but its running fine. i hope hp makes compaq more like them. hp seems to be the "leader" or w/e you call it of the merger

for starters, there's the official description of what the difference is. i doubt you'll bother to read it since you seem to have made up your mind already that there is no difference.

but i'll link it anyway.

eh, it's prolly nearly the same thing. i just posted that 'cause h121589 had an attitude.

mooseman2070
11-19-2003, 09:03 PM
yeah he did. but that article didnt tell much. im stil leaning towards compaq. the hp/compaq amd one at best buy are the exact same except the hp has corel quattro software and compaq has microsoft works.

should i go for compaq or hp? can i use window washer and just get works from warez sites?

3RA1N1AC
11-19-2003, 11:01 PM
Window Washer sounds like a superficial cleaning program. if the computer comes with any "junk" software running in the background, you'll prolly just have to figure out what it is and disable it manually, for example use run -> msconfig.exe to go through the start menu and trim down the amount of stuff that's running at startup (Windows doesn't require most programs that insert themselves into the startup list).

as for your concern about bundled software-- you might wanna have a look around on eDonkey and see what's easier to get hold of. that network is a little bit slow, but it's pretty reliable for getting hold of large warez files.

i dunno enough about current HP/Compaq models to comment on which is actually better, though.

I would say Dell with an AWESOME 4 year warranty...that way your garanteed to have it at least 4 years ;) . But I dont know if you mean it will still have good performance in 4 years, or you want it to last 4 years. You prob wont get a laptop that will still have good performance in 4 years sept maybe an alienware or voodo, or very high end notebook which are very exspensive. Dell is great....I know from exsperiance.

11-21-2003, 10:39 PM
ok biddawg, what do you reccomend? i want ot have at least 512 ram, 40 gb, cdrw/dvd, and i dont want celeron. also my budget is about 1500

bigdawgfoxx
11-21-2003, 11:58 PM
Inspiron 5150 (http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=19&kc=6V602&l=en&oc=5150SAP&s=dhs) This has a 3.0 Ghz P4!!, 512MB of ram, 40 GB HD, and a CD RW/DVD combo drive. All for 1482. Only a 1 year warranty though, heres one with a slightly slower CPU but better warranty, depending on what you want, this might be better. Dimension 5100 (http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=19&kc=6V601&l=en&oc=5100SAP&s=dhs). Has the exact same stuff as the one above, except a 2.8Ghz P4, BUT it has a 3 year warranty...cost 1,501. Sorry bout going over a dollar haha

Hmmm ok the links dont take you to the custom ones I put together. Just put 512MB and the CPU i listed and stuff...and you will get a good price.

mooseman2070
11-22-2003, 12:13 AM
ok that 2nd one sounds good. im looking for at least 3 year warranty (like the second) and accidental damage (for at least 3 years). i know dell has 4 year warranty.

im looing on hp.com to see how much an amd would cost with their best warranty

mooseman2070
11-22-2003, 12:33 AM
mkay now 1646 w/ 100 rebates for....

amd 2500+

56k/802.11b lan (wi fi)
15'' tft xga lcd (1024x768)
ati mobility radeon
3 year express warranty/accidental damage

;) -_- not sure if its a good deal, maybe even exensive. but it does have the warranty. that warranty is at least 300. i cant check because my computer is too slow

mooseman2070
11-22-2003, 12:35 AM

bigdawgfoxx
11-22-2003, 12:53 AM
Ok, the 2.8Ghz P4 would whoop the 2500..although I love the the 2500. And Dell is a much better name and every HP laptop I have seen has kinda sucked...clogged with shit and slow and breaks...I would go with the second Dell. Trust me you will love it.
