I spent most of my 35+ year career designing, constructing, and operating some of the (for their time) largest transcontinental and transoceanic transmission systems on the planet. A good example is my last project before retirement, what was initially a 640Gb/s trans-pacific (largest capacity at the time of turn-up in 2000-2001), that has since been upgraded to 3Tb/s and is in the initial steps to further expansion to 10Tb/s, all on the same 4-fiber 21,000km SDH ring,
