Does anyone have other OS for The Raspberry PI?

What are you asking? Raspberry Pi has a number of Linux distributions specialized for it.

I'd recommend buying at least 2 so that you can use another solely as a HTPC type device with XBMC installed.

Fantastic software!

LOL i have two, for that exact purpose (XBMC).

Check out the n00bs package though, that'll give you a whole array of different OSes you can install.

These gadgets catch my attention again, and again. Fantastic what people have figured out ways to make use of them. Look forward to more powerful versions to come.

Running 3 Pi here. One with XBMC compiled on Arch linux and two for Home automation (ROS + IR). No problem so far and the best quality/price ratio. For XBMC though, you can check the alternatives board for something a little more powerfull.

I love Pi - I have 2 running as media servers, one I have put inside a rubber key spectrum 48k, with a custom os that I have build from Raspian by basically cutting things out - on bootup plays manic miner loading screen and then boots straight into fuse (spectrum emulator)
I am starting to get into automation and I think a Pi will work great for that too so have one with a vanilla build Raspian loading with the std development tools.
Media servers are running RaspBMC

Pi's are great but not amazing for newsgroup downloading etc if you want top speeds. Mine throttles out at about 3mbps SSL because if the yenc encoding being too hard on the processor.

In case you're interested into some more powerfull board, you might be interested in wikipedia.org/Odroid (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Odroid).
The Odroid-U3 or the XU might be of special interest. U3's got 4 Core Mali @ 1.7 Ghz and XU has a Samsung Exynos5 OcataCore BigLittle ARM @ 1.6 GHz.
In general pretty powerfull and can be ordered for ~169$ from Korea. The companys own page is tending to be somewhat slow sometimes, and right now it is not reachable from here. But it's URL would be http://www.hardkernel.com/main/products/prdt_info.php?g_code=G137510300620

If you are running PlexMediaServer, there is RASPlex running as a plex client. Enjoy the Pie.

That's good to know. I'd heard between yEnc and using stronger ssl ciphers the poor things crawl.

This is kinda what I'm looking to do for myself. Maybe even gutting and mounting in an old NES system and going for the whole retro feel.

XBMC runs pretty well on these things. http://www.xbian.org/ is one of the better distros.

Yeah me too. A little HTPC box out in the livingroom would be nice. I've got a Roku but there's some limitations.

I think there are ways to improve performance by adjusting how openssl handles the TLS cipher.

You can also add boblight to XBMC which gives a great effect similar to ambilight , search youtube boblight theres a few demos :)

I bought a RPi at release but never really used it. Eventually just resold it a couple of months ago.

A shame, but I really couldn't find a use for it.

Im running OpenElec on mine and it works just fine. A little slow on the menu browsing but plays full 1080p movies with no problem. I did have to overclock it though

With the launch on the new Pi 2 on Monday, im thinking of getting one of these to use as an always on usenet client based on the power savings in comparison to leaving even a netbook on 24/7. Looks like a bit of research is going to be required as I've never really used linux before, so the previous posts have been most useful

Moan time - The media really screwed up the launch announcement of this in regards to MS bringing windows 10 to the device whereas in reality 10 IOT. Just imagine, £30, Windows 10 it would have been the greatest computer bargain on the planet but sadly not to be.

I am running OpenElec which is a stripped down version of XBMC with all the features. Works great but is a bit slow in the menus

how is openelec performance with the raspberry pi 2?

Just get a hummingboard, beagle bone black or banana pi, or something else that isn't a raspberry pi.

The people behind raspberry pi are pushing weird agendas on twitter, and other people do it better nowadays anyways.

That is subjective but I replace my 2 rev1 boards with PI2 and it is very slick with Openelec 5.0.3. There is so much extra stuff other than stream NFS 1080 I know but that is really all I use it for..... video playback is a lot more prompt on startup and navigation

Sorry best I can offer as that is all I use `em for

Rgds
Grib

... also since I`ve seen that post about the xbmc tvaddons "addon" then yes it does that works really well too (not something I tried before but have now).... also very slick with nextpvr addon and menus at same time (again not something I even really attempted in the past - it was crap before)

Now on 5.0.5 of course :)

Been using one for XBMC for a while now, much better than the PS3 with codec support etc. Like the way it updates fanart / info from the net too :)

Cheers

If talking Pi ModB then bin it and get a Pi2, it really works well with openelec (as of now 5.0.6). Much smoother in operation but still all the same functionality

I now have 3 old Pi ModB boards collecting dust but still happy I purchased the 2 new Pi2s :)

I have 3 pi's. One running rasplex which I don't really use anymore, one running retropie, and my old model B just kind lies around...
