There are multi format DVD±R drives.

My recommendation: The LG GSA- 4040B

DVD burners have gotten so cheap, just a year ago, 400 bucks was about the cheapest you could find one, now I've seen them on pricewatch for like 85 dollars. I remember when Cd burners first came out, and even those didn't have such price drops, as relative to time, as DVD burners have.

First CD burner I bought was a Smart & Friendly 4X, $250, and it was on Sale, I think that was 97' or 98'.
Still works though. :P

I just wish the DVD burners out now, would burn cds faster, most seem to only burn cds at 12x - 20x.

DVD+R and -R are just two different standards, different companies are pushing different standards, personally I always use +R, but just choose which ever one your stand alone DVD player will support.

@ raiserblade2003, to tell you the truth i wouldnt have a clue what the difference is. I would have a search for it but there is no need because most good dvd burners do both anyways.

@ mooseman2070, dont feel stupid. I remember when i didnt have a pc (a long long time ago) at my school i though you could back up your homework on a blank cd with just a normal cd rom

just get a combination -RW/+RW drive. you may as well, just in case one format eventually wins the "battle," right? also, that would just make it easier to shop for discs, without worrying which format your burner can use and which format your stand-alone dvd player can play.

although brands like HP, LiteOn, etc make "decent" burners, i'd recommend taking a good long look at the Pioneer and Sony brands. for less than $200 they're much less picky about the brand & quality of recordable DVD discs that you use, than a lot of drives.

I'd wait and get a DVD Burner that supports Dual Layers!

Philips just announced that they sucessfully developed a commercial dual layer Dvd Burner

The Story (http://www.dvdrw.com/press/duallayer.htm?partner=cdfreaks)

The DVD+RW Alliance is setting an aggressive feature and performance roadmap, and the dual-layer DVD+R format book is expected to be ready within this year. Recorders for both the PC and consumer electronics markets are expected to become available during the course of 2004.

I'd wait if I were you.

it's already been posted in this forum. ;)

actually, there is a dual layer +RW format and a dual layer -RW format coming out soon.

and then there's Blu-Ray DVD, which inevitably spawned a new burner format. it never ends.

The specification for dual layer DVD-RW hasn't even been finally agreed, so don't expect that on the market any time soon.

Dual layer DVD+RW won't be on the market until mid to late 2004. Expect it to be very expensive initially, since there's no opposition.

I think one factor to take into account is how much the blank media costs.

The latest whizbang burner won't be of much use (outside of bragging rights) if you can't get/afford the disks to feed it.

As far as waiting for the next great format to arrive...there is always something much better than what you currently have or can get just over the horizon.
Resign yourself to obsolescence the minute you leave the store.

exactly my "drift" when i mentioned Blu-Ray and said "it never ends." before you even walk out of the store with a new electronic gizmo, the manufacturer has already planned out its obsolescence.

unless you've got very deep pockets, you've gotta make decisions about what you're willing to pay for a certain level of usefulness. don't worry about impressing the neighbors because your stuff is newer & better than theirs. think about how well it does what you want it to do, for the price you're willing to pay.

Have you heard of the kids who found a new way (http://www.cdfreaks.com/news/8516)to have Dvd Burners write Dvd's?

They can supposedly increase the storage capacity of Cd's and Dvd's by 64x.

That'd be sweeet if they could do it, but I doubt that these new "super dvd's" would work in a dvd player to play burned movies...

We can only hope
