I would guess that like most everything else it totally depends on who you give it to.

Take for instance the two posts above me,who apparently haven't bothered to post for literally years but strangely suddenly decide to stop lurking when they want something.:)

Of course I do have an old skateboard that I haven't used in years but I hang onto it just in case I ever need it so maybe this is sort of the same thing only sillier and less ethical.:)
