I am more amazed how The Way Way Back is in every list. It is the most clichéd and the most boring movie of 2013.

Don't know about being too young. I think, I dismiss any movie with no originality or good acting/story these days. I avoid mainstream movies like the plague unless it is action/thriller. It seems all the good stuff is happening in TV.

In other related but likewise uninteresting news , I was reading reviews for Upstream Color on IMDB and one guy said his girlfriend refused to watch anything but "Indie" films.:ermm:

Aby you and she should get together and create little equally narrow-minded Nazi babies and have one of these so called artistes film the whole process,intercut it with black and white scenes of flowers wilting and a static shot of some unknown guy banging his head against a wall,add on some needlessly sombre 2 note background music and label the whole thing Art.

Do it all in a foreign language so you can add subtitles or better yet without dialogue or discernible plot and then end it suddenly without any resolution.Presto bingo you now have yourself some AVClub fanboys.

PS Want real Art? Something that resonates emotionally but still makes you think as opposed to leaving you confused but afraid to admit that you just subjected yourself to utter shit and wasted 90 minutes of your life because some pasty idiot that in real life you would probably run from might label you dumb?

I like the offerings listed in both yours and aby's lists vs the mainstream-sort that appears on the site's main page. I've been largely disappointed (does not mean not entertained) with this year's overt offerings. Maybe the gems are in need of some digging this year.

I just finished Silver Linings Playbook. Just one word: Jennifer Lawrence; okay, that was two, but Black Jesus, what an actor. The film is great, the direction is great, the acting is great, the character development is great. The movie is great.

I watched the first episode of True Detective.Matthew McConaughey was fucking brilliant and I don't even like Matthew MConaughey.

Overall the initial episode had a terrific sense of place if also a bit over-directed and conspicuously moody.

Also although so far the two shows are not really anything alike, True Detective had me thinking of Breaking Bad what with the stellar acting and tendency towards directorial flourishes.
Along those lines I think McConaughey might even prove to be better than Bryan Cranston and BB's "over-directing" not as distracting as there was usually a lot more going on action-wise with that show.

Also could have done with different tittle credits as these are basically True Blood/American Horror Story redux.

During the family dinner scene when McConaughey's character was tanked but obligated to give the appearance of being sober,there was just so much going on I think I came.
And then when things didn't play out like Woody expected them to I think I had a multiple orgasm.

I'm pretty sure that to be that fucking awesome at acting one has to be stoned out of one's gourd, so good job, casting director.

If anyone's looking for another excellent show Hannibal premiered in 2013 and is returning for it's second season in a month. It's based off of Red Dragon (ie before Silence of the Lambs) and is amazingly well done. Mads Mikkelsen is brilliantly creepy as Hannibal and apparently it runs in the family as his brother was just as excellent as Charles Augustus Magnussen in Sherlock. And contrary to the name of the show Mikkelsen doesn't carry the show on his own, and Hugh Dancy arguably does an even better job as Will Graham.

PS Only precaution is don't watch it if you have a weak stomach. Or if you're eating. Although that's to be expected, and anything less would be a disappointment.

PPS Idol clearly cant comprehend large numbers since this thread says 2013

With Her, American Hustle, and 12 Years a Slave I'd argue this has been one the strongest years we've had in a while.

HannibalDefinitely the best looking show of last year. Still baffles me how they can get away with that kind of gore on network tv. Turned me on to Mikkelsen's work. Caught a film he was in called The Hunt/Jagten, pretty good. He reminds me of an older version of Jamie Lannister's actor from Thrones. Danes, man.
