So, I'm posting my second post in order to un-n00b myself, but I gotta say:

I agree with those saying this isn't the best method. The way to 'onboard' new users and get them participating isn't to force them to pass an arbitrary threshold, it's to *make them want to participate*. How to do that, I don't know - you guys know your site better than I do - but you gotta realize that most people spamming your forums right now are basically going to post twice and then be done.

One idea: instead of a comment section where it's 90% "thanks" and "low quality", turn it into a review area. Get people participating and talking *about the content*. Give the ability to heart reviews (for the positive feedback), and start engaging people around the content.

Possibly I'm blind but I don't see anything preventing anyone from reviewing stuff and "engaging" with other people here now.
Sure the people like yourself will only post twice but I doubt any improvement to the forums,which btw you seem totally oblivious to as you speak only of the NZB section ,would make the slightest difference.

On the other hand,maybe you could prove all I say wrong and post a review or try to engage with somebody and make me eat my cynical words.

They can do that already in the forums.

Another idea: make the users click through ads to get access, or make the section a donator perk. You could put your money where your mouth is. The ones who truly value the section beyond 2 post lip service will follow. The rest can find an alternative--plenty exist. It blows my mind users are still complaining about this.

Hey, sorry I'm a bit behind here, I just read the OP on this thread today. I've been offline for a couple days building a new PC! It's titties, AMD FX-8350, good ASUS mobo, 8gigs of Corsair Vengeance Pro DDR3, SSD boot drive, AMD R9 270 GPU, Win 8.1 pro (bleh, I don't like it, but it sure boots up quick). It's a world of difference between this and the Core 2 Quad Q6600 with 4GB of DDR2 that I was using for a long time. Anyway, more to the point:

I'm pretty active in the NZB section, mostly posting collections (in the DVDR category mostly). However, I'm not a forum guy. I mostly just comment on the content of NZB posts or try to answer a few questions if I can. Not that the forum here at FST isn't any good, but quite frankly I just haven't ever really used it that much. I have nothing against it, I'm just not really a forum guy. Should I be doing more posts in the forum in order to adhere to these new rules?

Yea I'm one of the many that only use the nzb section but don't contribute. I wouldn't mind clicking through some ads but not one of those things that make you sign up for something or answer a bunch of survey questions.

Never really have much to say as I'm a reader more than a writer.
However, I do find it odd that posting seems to be extensive when there is a complaint of some sort.
I read somewhere that 2% of satisfied customers will take the time to share.

I'm saying: you're probably not really going to accomplish much. It's kinda short-sighted. The people that aren't participating (myself and the others that are the reason you did the 2 post rule) aren't participating because that's not why they came here in the first place. You're right, I'm totally oblivious to the forums, because the forums are full of random noise from random people that I just don't care about. I had fun in php forums forums 15 years ago, but at this point, I have literally ZERO interest in discussing sports on some random internet site about filesharing. It's really nothing personal, I just honestly don't care.

Frankly, if anything, I think the 2 post rule will hurt this site in the long term, not help it. Think about it this way: every person visiting the site is a potential community member, right? Some are easier to convert, some are harder. Some of us have hit the 2 post rule and are posting in order to be able to go back to the nzb section, because it's useful to us. But if you're a brand new user to the site, and haven't experienced the value first-hand, there's a higher chance that you'll see the arbitrary comment threshold and just leave. As long as a user keeps coming back, you've got a chance to convert, but if your user leaves, you've lost that chance. I think that the 2 post rule will cause you to lose people you otherwise would have converted into community members.

So,what I'm trying to say is: instead of putting up arbitrary barriers (click through ads, 2-comment post), focus on what you can do to improve conversions. Figure out WHY people like me don't post, and figure out ways to make it more tempting to post. I suggested reviews because I feel like it's something that would interest me. I'm in the NZB section, looking at movies, it'd be nice to see legit, community upvoted reviews at the same time. I don't know if that'd work for everyone, but it'd encourage me to get more active. I'd probably start by upvoting good reviews, then commenting on them, then maybe I'd start reviewing myself. All of a sudden, I'm an engaged community member. (And no, going to the forum isn't the same thing... remember, I'm a leecher: you need to SHOW me the interesting reviews, and CONVERT me into engaging... I'm fundamentally selfish: I'm really not going to look around much...).

That's just one suggestion: other users might convert differently, I don't know.

Anyway, I don't really have a horse in this race, and you can be unhappy with me for being blunt and honest if you like. (Btw, for what it's worth, I'm not *complaining* about the 2 post rule. I don't really care about it.. two posts are easy enough, I'm already unn00bed, it's all cool.. I'm just saying that I don't think the 2 post rule is going to do what you think it'll do).

Everyone is idiotic/lazy. Everyone is a child that needs to be led by the hand. It's a rule of the internet. Seriously, I'm not joking: people are selfish and the only reason they visit websites is because they get some personal value out of it. If 'engaged community' is the goal, you have to make *being engaged* the reason people come to your site. Right now, for a lot of us, the only reason to come here is for nzbs. If you can trick us/lead us by the hand into becoming engaged, then you're all set. The 2 post rule doesn't do that.

HOWEVER, it seems that you've tricked me into engaging because now I'm on post number 4, when I only really had to do two! Two post rule works!!

Also I totally agree that most people are inherently self-serving but seeing as I really don't want anything to do with with people who are completely self-serving I really think you need to plead your case to someone else.

ok so im a noob here but have been on the groups since 95.now what i would really like is some access to the nzb forum since nzbz4u went belly up.so if i got it right i need to make at least 2 proper nzb post.now i am a at least 3 time a year poster to a certain sci fi group with regularity for about the past 5 or so years so what im needing is a strait forward way into how to post a proper nzb to this forum---now because of my noob status lets just say the files posted will have nfo and par files and will probably be in the good old avi /type format along with a few toxie post /dvd.so any info leading me to the proper and non piss off the mods way to post would be great.also another question on the a for mentioned nzbz4u they would post the rars in a encrypted manner so that when u dl'ed the files u got something like--- ashjhjhdashihih.rar then when u ran the par files it turned into toxie at troma.rar.001.how do i encrypt the post in this way as i would not want my years ago post to be dmca'ed as they still exist and i use them on a regular basis to re-up files .so mister mods a point or personal message in the right direction would be a nice thing.thanks.yea and i know about the 15 day thing but if i can why not be able to post up some nzb's if i can whilst i wait for noob to be upgraded.

Kind of an odd request. I imagine 99% of us are here for NZBs only, not a forum. The forum just provides the interface of acquiring said NZBs, as opposed to the newsnab interfaces found elsewhere..

This seems reasonable.

One note: advice threads currently say "The NZB Section is only viewable by members." etc.

In fact, people below the 15 day / 2 post requirement (like... err... me) can see the sections fine, but no "download" links.

If any site admin sees this, it would be slightly clearer if the posts all said "NZB download links are only viewable" — no room for confusion.

Funny... Been a member since 2008 and I've only clicked the "Thanks" button when getting the NZB file which was fine untill now? Now I have to write something meaningfull? LOL... :p
I really dont know what to write or where (or why?).
The only reason I can see why you should write a comment is to thank the poster, but, that dosn't count? Strange?

The reason I've preferred this site is that you didn't have to post anything (but you could if you have something on your mind, which I don't). I've left all the groups/sites/forums where you had to be active because I just don't have the time anymore (12-hour work day, wife, kids, cats, friends, etc...).

I've been active since before the internet existed downloading from BBSes onto tapestreamers, and been very active on the mIRC, eMule, Kazaa, Torrent and NewsGroup sharing scene but not anymore, not for the last 10 years.

I hope that this forum will continue as it is (which is great) and not add some of the stupid things from other sites (required weekly nzb uploads/weekly comments/monthly logins or account deleted, etc...)

(Sorry for spelling, not english speaking) ;)

I'm extremely happy for the hard work people put in to the uploads, as I do not have the wherewithal to be an uploader myself. I hope this post and the one that comes after it provide all who run this wonderful site the warm fuzzies they are looking for, because while I think this 2 post practice solves literally nothing I am super grateful you exist.

Honestly, I really didn't have a lot to say, but if this is what it takes, I'll be happy to add a few lines of meaningless conversation intended for a group of people who have absolutely no interest in what I have to say. Is that enough, or would you like to hear what I really think?

I think some patience is required, after all the site has had the occasional problems in the past and always come back up.

I have confidence the FST Crew members will get it fixed, however you cant expect them to work round the clock on it - it is a free service after all.

As blackmoon above said 'we just all view and leech' which is true in my case as well.

You know it is amazing, some things just never change, 30+ yrs ago, we had the winers in the forums/irc/bbs's crying about posting, sticking around, wanting something for nothing and here it is the 21st century and we still have them. Now I'm stuck on n00b and can't download.

This is annoying as hell.

Also wondering why old collection uploads do not count towards posts. They're much more meaningful to the community than forum blubbering.

As much as I admire your determination to be a prick I nevertheless feel obligated to point out that a "community" being a specific and distinct part of a "society" assumes some degree of socialization whether you like it or not.

If it's any consolation I never considered you or any of the other long time NBZ lurkers to be part of this site, no matter how much you upload/download, as frankly none of it is hosted here.:mellow:
