Currently I'm with Usenetserver. I pay for the year at once and am coming up on my next payment window. Can some one recommend a better site?

Try newsgroupdirect. They have decent rates and retention and I like the fact that they do non-expiring block accounts, particularly useful for the infrequent user like myself. They have decent flash sales as well if you subscribe where I picked up 1.5Tb for about $20 with SSL a few months back.

well over 3500 days retention,
3800 days on text. Binaries are around 2k.

Im using frugal usenet. Low retention 300 days but i grab soon as. Cheap and cheerful and don't seem to have as many missing parts as astraweb.

Anyone using usenet needs, of course, a good 'primary' server AND a good 'fills'. Lots of folks use the Astra/Blocknews combination, others like the Supernews/Blocknews or Supernews/Astra (I've used all three, am currently on the Astra/Blocknews and have been for for about a decade).

Giganews is really good as a primary, but is VERY expensive next to the lower-priced spread. I've also used Unsenetserver in the past as a fills, and still have tons of 'bytes' there and occasionally take a look at them as a secondary when the other plants are having 'problems'.

A lot depends on what you're looking for; the usual bitches with pro-wresting and low-rent 'network' tv captures tend to drive folks to certain providers (usually non-US), but I have little if any trouble with Astra (usually the main butt of jokes by those of that crowd) in grabbing anything I'm wanting, INCLUDING tv captures of 'non-low-rent' tv shows (the better ones!).

If that changes in the future, I'll change my schemes. But I doubt it.

Most 'good' plants (like Astra and Giga) are pretty darn complete back to what I call 'day one', somewhere around July-August of 2008 (some 2000 days back at this point). Virtually all the indexers out there only go back about half that (NZBIndex or Binsearch, and the johnny come lately recent ones only a fraction of that). Built-in indexers in some newseraders that use the database of Giga and such, are much much better (go back the full 2000+ days).

In short, Usenetserver, if the price is right, is still a fairly good plants (US and EU), but I'd again have a 'fills' account of non-expiring bytes at a couple other plants out there just in case.

I use tweak news, movies stay up for a few days compared to a few hours like the others I've used. Speed drops a little around mid day in the states, but picks back up at nighttime. It's mainly because it's a uk site and the peak hours there are during their night time.

Nothing can compare to the completion of tweaknews.eu.
I've maintained a block with them for ages, but might actually go with an unlimited plan because they've never let me down.
Pro tip: If you take the trial, they will email you several really good deals not posted on the site when your trial is over. You can even save the email, and top up blocks you use up with the deal they sent in the email.

Tell them the guy who needed two posts on FST to use the site again sent you! :)

Another vote for tweak, I have a block with them and it's been great. The speed is a bit slower but for filling in missing pieces it's fine. My main account is UseNetNow, with a Tweak block and a block from NewsDemon.

I switched to Newsleecher about 9 months ago after using Newshosting for many years. I've always used Newsleecher to leech and switching to their server makes it easier. I've had no problems at all with it.

Still on astra despite the worries about takedowns last year. It was pretty bad for a while but recently I've had no issues with anything, really.

Never had a problem in 5 years.

My only complaint with Tweaknews is the 1000 days of retention. I should probably switch to someone else who has more retention and just use them for fills.

Which plan do you have? I have much worse experience with supernews. I've been using them for 2 years with the 9.99/month unlimited. Speed is good but binaries over 600 days have too many incomplete and not worth downloading.

I've been using GigaNews for 5+ years. No issues. Take downs seem to take at least 24+ hours before they take effect. So you have a chance to grab some deleted stuff.

I was told once also there are basically only 2 major USENET providers ASTRAWEB and Giganews. All others are re-sellers of these services.

Does anyone know anything about that or how many actual independent USENET hosts there are?

I get free 5 Mbits usenet with my ISP which outsources its usenet to highwinds. 60 days retention.

The biggest thing for me is takedowns. Biggest example for me is when going for a tv series like Game of Thrones. It's gone within the hour from the post with the usetnet from my ISP. But tweaknews usually last longer with regards to takedowns.

What other providers are slower with DMCA requests?

johnjohnson
01-23-2014, 07:39 AM
AstraWEB as primary, SuperNews as slave. And a BlockNews and a GigaNews-account on hold only paid for and used in emergencies.
But still, I stumble into things I can't download from time to time :smilie4: mainly hbo & showtime! which of course makes some of the best tv...

I have been with newshosting comming up on 3 yrs ($99.99/yr), fast, uncapped (this month I am at 1.3 TB and no throttling), and up to 60 connections.

They have their own usenet software the search is good not the best but good

I can easily get stuff that is 2000 days or older, sometimes no errors some pars needed.

They comply with DMCA but seem to be one of the slowest to DMCA.

Can anyone tell me how to set up a block account for fills using the Newsleecher Software? I'm assuming I just add the block account after the primary one? Correct. Copypasta'd:

1. Go to the Manager tab.
2. Click “Add Server”.
3. Enter the server details.
4. Check the “Advanced Settings” box.
5. Change the “Priority” to 2.
6. Hit OK.
7. Check the box left to the server to activate it.
8. Done!

i recently added tweaknews but after 4 hours i had to re add newshosting.tweak on the fast plan was way to damned slow.it was goin at about 300 kbs to maxing out at 1 mbs.so i had to re add newshosting for speed and am using tweaknews for dmca'ed files.my set up was giga and newshosting but what good is 2002 days of retention on giga if everything u try to dl is dmca'ed-so im gonna stick with newshosting and tweak for awhile as newshosting is cheaper and tweak is still getting the dmca stuff.by the way just for comparison when using newshosting or giga i was topping out at 4 + mbs and even with tweak/newshosting i still get 4 mbs.yea sure better and longer retention sounds great but what good is retention if most files are gone off of server and giga does not remove the headers they leave those up to make it look as thought those files are there then when u dl the and are able to click on the header the file is 403.so u see a header but file is 403-----what a jipp job.i asked them why that was and the answer was the file had been removed due to dmca-----so why leave the header and remove the file---because it makes it look like there is more than there is ---ITS CALLED PADDING THE SERVER.---by the way on gigas dmca stuff u can dl the file and all of its parts but what u get is in the case of a dvd post is a rar file thats 50 mb's of space on ur hd but isnt really there either---it takes up space but is screwed up on purpose to be dmca compliant.

i forgot to add that giganews's dmca takedowns have so screwed up things on their servers that some COMPLETE dl's will on my end drop to 2mbs while another complete post from the same poster or another in the same group will fly off the charts at 4mbs---this group is astronomy amongst many others-by the way ive been getting stuff all morn with great completion with tn.might i add chrisjan that a setup like mine is good im pullin files from at least 1348 days with perfect or near perfect completion with my above setup.i think giga is dead to me now with this setup .now 1 thing ive noticed im redl'ing boneless and ive noticed that tweak does not seem to be pullin headers but nh is.its a bit odd but this is a test period for me and i might add that tweak has a free trial period that is free .
