View Full Version : Downloading Music Is Illegal

I don't care how much money artists or the RIAA make, downloading music is illegal. You can't justify breaking the law just because you don't think it's fair that the music industry makes too much money. That's capitalism at work. If you don't like it, move to North Korea and see how much you like communism.

I download because I can. If I like an artist enough I will go out and buy the album and support them if not then I don't. I don't resell downloaded music nor profit from it financially and the artist has not gained or lost any money from me doing so...

:o Really it is? Why did nobody tell me this <_<

You can't justify breaking the law just because you don't think it's fair

i for my part dont justify it in anyway, I know its against the law to SHARE COPYRIGHTED songs and I can live with it

I dont see it as downloading illegally, I see it as trading legally.

Of course its illegal :)

Programs like Kazaa/Bittorrent/Emule are not illegal on their own (and I believe Sharman have won court cases which prove that they're not) its what most people do with them (ie sharing cracked/ripped files and files which they have no permission to distribute).

But realistically theres no way around it downloading pretty much anything from Kazaa or any P2P app breeches copyright laws.

Can somebody please explain to me why downloading music is NOT illegal?

Does that mean buying pirate software is not illegal but selling it is?

If it is only uploading and not downloading that is illegal, then we should be thankful for those out there who risk their hide sharing files for us openly without privacy patches.

 Does the RIAA pay some asshole to go onto Kazaa forums and talk a bunch of crap to try and scare some people off from pirating mp3s? I've seen a bunch of newbies coming here acting like they are scared of getting sued by the RIAA and their new tactics.

I am not a noob trying to scare people.

I am simply asking a question.

Somebody said dowloading is not illegal but uploading is.

All I want to know is why and what does the law state?

Since when is somebody trying to broaden their knowledge or help them feel a little more secure an attempt at scaring people?

Arm

By illegal you mean being prosecuted and sent to jail right? No, pirating mp3s is not illegal. You can get sued by the RIAA though.

I think it's obvious the person just started this topic in order to cause a flame-war. Look at the language they used - they don't even know what they're talking about, and then they start going on about North Korea, as if they think Koreans are the owners of K-Lite or something!!
Now They have disappeared, probably too scared to see what people have written about them!! Hopefully they will never come back in here again !!!

Hahaha, you people make me laugh! You guys have the worst logic I've seen in quite a while! Mainly those of you who cry "file-sharing will never die, screw the RIAA!"... I never said it would die. I simply said that what you're doing is wrong. You can keep filesharing as long as you please, but you can't deny that what you're doing is wrong. Except of course for those of you who download non-copyrighted files.

But seriously, you guys are HILARIOUS! Sparkle1984, you're the most entertaining. You rave on and on and on about how determined you are to share and how you don't care at all about "threats" by the RIAA. non-copyrighted files.

think about it, other than me, how many music people out there will share and dl non-copyrighted songs? i mean, i used to have a decent collection of about 100 mp3's. then i got bored and started exploring techno, which turned out to be really helpful when i'm trying to concentrate. now, all i listen to is techno remixes (non-copyrighted).

still, yes, dling music is a bad thing, but would u rather pay $16-20 for a cd when u only want to listen to one or two songs? i mean, u really have to too rich or too stupid to do something like that. and also, those itunes and rhapsody and stuff, they charge $0.99 for 1 song. so if u dl a cd's worth of song's, that's $20!! wtf! i'm not that rich!! and look at the pathetic collection of songs. i mean, the new napster has like 2000 songs in it's database (data is an estimate, most likely more than 2000). my friend tried to look for the Beatles, and they were't even listed. i mean, wat kind of pathetic service is that? so, even though i have no grudge with the RIAA, i still think their efforts are futile. there is no fuking way they can stop 60 million american kazaa users (and that's just kazaa user, not counting emule and bittorrent and irc) from pirating no matter how hard they try.

and if u do work for the riaa, take a break from the cock sucking (jk  ) and go home and spend some time with ur kids. lol. i just think ur efforts aren't really solving any probs. i can point u to some great articles saying that piracy might actually save ur business. if u want to, just say so, and i'll give u a couple of links.

I was just wondering... Is this "legal person" so much legal in his/her other aspects of his/her life... I mean, does he/she always stop at red lights, never drives above the speed limits, doesn't ever annoy his/her neighbors with noise, pays taxes immaculately, etc., etc. Personally I doubt it, Mr. or Ms. Legal_Person, and given your second message's crap arguments ("get a girlfriend", etc.), I doubt that you have anything to do with the legal profession at all... ;)

Anyhow, just to add my own little opinion here: Yes, D/Ling music is illegal, but as far as I am concerned, there are more important illegal things happening out there: Crime, drugs, murder, embezzlement, etc. So until the world becomes a better place, I would suggest that the relevant authorities sort out these problems before annoying 4m happy users that simply exchange files without profiting from it.

Until then, I personally will continue sharing files unabated! And BTW, in my continent (European Union), I do not even know if file-sharing is illegal anway :D

Dude, get a life! If you don't care about my "threats" then why are you wasting your time on this forum? Haha, dude, you're such a loser. Get a girlfriend and get a job, do something real with your life.

Anyways, keep arguing with me, i'm enjoying it.
:flame:

Get a girlfriend??!!! I am a girl !!! Why do you assume everyone on this forum is a man??!! Get a job??!! I'm a computing science student at university, and I have 2 little part-time jobs, if you really want to know!! I am very busy with my coursework, so now I only spend about an hour a day on this forum. Even though I don't care about your threats, I come on this forum because I like talking about filesharing, and sharing my thoughts openly, and getting ideas from others.

I don't care how much money artists or the RIAA make, downloading music is illegal. You can't justify breaking the law just because you don't think it's fair that the music industry makes too much money. That's capitalism at work. If you don't like it, move to North Korea and see how much you like communism.
the only mistake at communism is: you cannot expect people of sharing
their thoughts & files openly cause they are just humans - that is sad...

so I am happy to see someone sharing ;)

and yeah there is more behind sharing: exchanging thoughts openly
could lead to a better understanding ;)

My bad, I should have know that Sparkle, your name would be a pretty faggotty name for a guy.

Some of you bring up good points, but a lot of your arguments are still laughable. For example:

Pirating mp3s is wrong? What about price fixing, screwing over the artists and pumping the mainstream media full of crappy artists. Thats wrong and this is making it more fair. (posted by Arm)

First, screwing over the artists...how the heck are you helping the artists in any way? Sure, you might be helping them get known, but you're also distributing their music for free and that doesn't profit them at all. Second, pumping the mainstream media full of crappy artists...from what I see, those "crappy artists" in the mainstream are making the most money and getting the most popularity. They have countless more fans than the non-mainstream bands, so obviously they aren't as crappy as you say they are. And as for price fixing...well, it is their industry, and like I said earlier, we do practice capitalism in this country (thank goodness for that) so they can set whatever price they see fit.

And lastly, some of you are accusing me of focusing on something small like filesharing and overlooking murder, drugs, and embezzlement. Let me ask you all this, how many murders, druggies, and embezzlers are there in this forum? Except for all the loser druggies, I'd have to say not a lot. So, in light of that, what's the point of me focusing on condemning murder and other serious crimes in a "FILESHARING" forum?? Of course I'm going to point out how sharing copyrighted songs is wrong--it's what practically all of you are doing!

But keep debating. I want to hear more arguments. So far, I haven't seen a single one that comes close to proving me wrong. The type of people I've seen are

1. The non-copyrighted song downloader- you're legal...you're also cool.
2. The justification person- you love to find reasons why you're actions aren't THAT illegal. For example: "The RIAA is dumb, so what I'm doing is okay!" or "Murdering people is worse than filesharing, so I'm not really doing anything that bad!"...you people are confused, and you don't have very good logic.
3. The insult people- you guys love to insult the RIAA, figures in authority, and me. You're just stupid, not to mention funny to read. Do you think I really care about your opinion? I put out facts, and you make yourself look stupid by offering up a completely subjective opinion. Keep smoking pot, but stay out of this forum while you're doing it.

Hey, this is our forum (of filesharers)!! And now you are barging in here, trying to start a flame-war, insulting people and acting as if you have a right to say that other people should stay out!!

If you don't care about our (filesharers) opinions, then why did you come in here in the first place?!! Just to try to annoy people?!! Are you a filesharer, by the way?

And also, faggot is not a very nice word, so I don't know why you used it; it could be construed as homophobic.

You put out facts??!! You don't even know what a fact is!! You started rambling on saying that everyone on here should move to North Korea, but hardly anyone over there has internet access anyway!! So what a pointless comment that was!!

Capitalism and current world trade laws have caused untold suffering to many thousands of people, particularly in the developing world. It has caused wars, environmental damage and human exploitation (multinational corporations operate sweatshop factories where employees are only paid a very low amount of wages, causing extreme poverty).

OK, the other extreme that they have in North Korea is not good either.

I would rather have a world order that is based on fair trade not free trade, sharing, peace, equality, respect for humanity and the environment. :)

 Hey just because their popular doesn't mean they are any good. Nor does it mean they will be popular forever. Sure mainstreams got alot of good artists but alot of them are pretty damn bad too. I don't give a fuck how much money they make. They can be the richest peope in the world but money does not buy respect or make your music any better.

Yeah it's their industry that means they can fuck over whoever they see fit. Gotta make a million dollars it doesn't matter who dies.

I'm closing this thread, but first, I'd like to make a few simple points:

1. Not everyone lives in the US and falls under their laws of what is legal/illegal. For some of us, the RIAA holds no threat and so your assumptions of illegality are totally bogus.

2. You have clearly started this as nothing more than a way to start arguments between yourself and people on this board. If you're not interested in filesharing, then why exactly are you here?

I'm closing this post, as it's become nothing more than flaming and insulting thanks to one person who has nothing better to do with his/her time.
