I guess it depends what you are into, I like gangster films so I quite enjoyed the Sopranos and broadwalk empire. Blue bloods and suits are good for an easy watch. If you like comedy big bang theory and how i met your mother are decent, i've also heard that always sunny in america is funny.
Then you have the classics like game of thrones, dexter, breaking bad

Granted the acting is decent but like that other big Starz series, Spartacus it suffers that most every character is either a scoundrel or a coward, so not really anyone to root for.
Also there's a lot tight shots and camera movement when there really should be.

Handheld has it's place but static dialogue scenes is usually not one of them.

Justified, Banshee - but i think they were surprised it got picked up for another season, SHERLOCK - although 3rd series a bit light, Venture Bros., Boardwalk Empire - sliding down a bit, Supernatural, Top Gear -Brit only of course - last season 19th got embarrassing but still has moments, Black Sails shows promise, Bletchley Circle very good 1st season, Almost Human 50/50, wifey addicted to Sleepy Hallow, looking forward to Fleming: The Man Who Would Be Bond, and a guilty time waster - Castle.
List without commentary:
Justified, Banshee, SHERLOCK, Venture Bros., Boardwalk Empire, Top Gear -Brit, Black Sails, Bletchley Circle, Almost Human, Sleepy Hallow,Castle

As I don't watch everything on TV I'm not really in a position to say. While I sporadically enjoy what they do on The Walking Dead ,subjectively speaking it veers into "not good" as often as it does "good" territoriality.
As for "the best " show if you believe the critics via the Critic's Choice Award nominees it would be one of ..

The Americans
Breaking Bad
Game of Thrones
The Good Wife
Masters of Sex
True Detective

I would venture that shows like Sherlock,Fargo,House of Cards and Orange is the New Black would generally also be considered superior to TWD

Personally I like Penny Dreadful (so far),Justified and GoT but like you that's more opinion than anything.:)

I really should have elaborated if I was going to ask a real question. I decided that I had it when they began integrating attractive mail-order Russian bride into the plot. It felt like they stopped introducing anything cool or interesting at that point and that they lost whatever it was that prompted me to love the show.

The plot for Fargo the movie was based (according to the Coen brothers who wrote the script) on actual crimes, the major one they based the story on was the murder of Helle Crafts in Connecticut in 1986. This is murder is famous because her husband used a wood chipper to dispose of her body.

By the same reasoning then Under Siege was based on Shakespeare's Julius Caesar because both involved knives.

Premieres tonight.

The books were exciting,if not especially well written. At least the vampires were truly horrifying.

The Strain built a lot a momentum after the obligatory "introduce the characters" premiere.

Been a while since I read the book(s) so a lot of it is fresh for me.
Especially digging on the aged Jewish vampire fighter and how that ties in with the Second World War.

Bad things are going to happen.berry bad things.

There's a whole vampire culture dating back in North American to the Pilgrims which contains factions and rulers and all that kind of stupid "mythology" stuff that ever since the X Files Science Fiction geeks like you seem to eat up.None of the factions being vampires are exactly what you might term "good" but some are definitely more measured in their dealings with humans than others.

The Red Band Society (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3576794/).Recorded it on a whim.Thought I'd hate it but ended up really liking it as it did a good job of turning characters who are basically cliches into people you care about.

As it basically tanked in the rating and with very little room for interesting stories to tell, probably not long for this world though.Oh well, better to burn out than to fade away or something.

I watched it based on your rec. I think it has potential. We only learned a little about each character, which struck me as more of a pilot than a first ep. People may warm to it. Seems Spielberg is the producer, and it is an Amblin product. Should get its first season based on that. I think there's room for story expansion in revealing the characters' back stories, as well as seeing how their relationships develop. Complications with health arise.

Interesting you like this, but have commented on the teenage girl (Rart, basically) audience of Arrow. This one seems more targeted at hormonal teen girls (look at the number of healthy-looking males to hot teen girl ratio*).

I liked the "whistling past the graveyard" vibe.As for your suggestions, the minute the show turns maudlin or worse, romantic,I'll be dropping it faster than OlgeL drops good sense.
Also for the love of all things holy, please no use of the current fad of flashbacks. That's simply lazy and pandering.

About Arrow.Everything I dislike about the CW distilled into one show.Overcomplicated.Relationshipy.Doesn't have a story to tell beyond staying on the air.
Not for nothing but the only superhero who by nature necessitates angsty hand wringing is Spider-Man. Even Superman's romance with Lois Lane is extremely secondary to the action.

I suspect we are due some flashbacks. Pretty powerful stuff seeing cancer-amp boy running on a soccer field with a full head of flowing-in-the-breeze hair. He's lost much. We'll get to find out why Grumpygirl2000 is so mean to everyone, why anorexia girl won't eat (parents, I'm betting parents), what daddy guitar player did/didn't do to psychic coma boy- I'm interested. But you are right, the flashback device has gotten stale as bread from the time of the flashback actually occurred.

We will probably also be introduced to other characters as the 6+ story pristine mega-complex hospital probably has more than 5 rooms and an elevator.

Good point on the relationship thing. Most superheroes are either loners, or have working relationships with other superfolks. However, they are somewhat necessary, on at least a single-serving level to show how evildoers are affecting others.

You and I seem to remain at an impasse regarding watching stuff for basic time-killing.

In a fit of madness,I watched three new shows - Gotham,Scorpion and Forever.Obviously too soon to pass judgment but my impressions.......

Gotham:Clearly going to pale next to any big screen Marvel adaption and does. The things that I noticed/bothered me the most was the constant use of the shitty CGI cityscape(didn't evoke anything) and in direct contrast to the movies, truly terrible music.
Some of the characters are OK but clearly not what someone wanting a superhero show are looking for. Sadly more The Cape (remember than one?)than the Caped Crusader.5/10

Scorpion: Sort of a semi-pleasant surprise.Dumb, sure but brings a certain level of humanity and excitement that almost makes you forgive it it's obvious faults.
Could certainly do with a lot less(ie zero) of the kid though but I guess they needed something to bring the waitress into the show. 7/10

Forever: Total "concept show" stealing equally cynically from Highlander and Elementary but I guess producers have to do something to make money for drugs. Kind of hated it until near the end when the denouement about Judd Hirsch's character bought it a bit of redemption.
Not terrible but like Gotham, really, really tired.4/10

Ironically given the hype of the three the first I would bail on is Gotham as except for Alfred I can't see anything new or interesting happening here.

I like to hear how other people felt even though this being FST I know I won't.

Noticed the number of downloads for both Gotham and Scorpion. It was late last night, and ended up with a sick dog who managed to puke in the house not more than 3 minutes after I had let her out. :frusty: At least she avoided the conveniently placed linoleum, and opted for the carpet.

That said, sounds like I was destined for dog vomit in one way or another. Thought the premise of Scorpion sounded decent- that is, creating a vehicle to showcase McPhee's rack. While Gotham seemed like it might be coolish, but ultimately will be difficult to pull off as it's a Batman show without the titular character.

Thought I'd wait. Currently working through Drunk History (better than I expected), eyeing Vikings with strong curiosity, and tempted to watch Band of Brothers (which I have never seen) due to its extremely high ratings and fan base.

IdolEyes787

Band of Brothers is excellent but loses a lot of impetus the last few episodes as the war comes to an end.
It's also pretty hard to keep track of the secondary characters.I've watched it end to end at least three times and only now am going "yeah that's so and so getting this leg blown off".

I watched the first season of Vikings more or less and didn't really like it but I think it's evolved a lot since then (probably) so for all I know it might be great.

The followup to BoB,The Pacific is pretty terrible though.

What about the Americans?
I understand that in the early days there were only 13 white women in the whole of America

Each one of those had an average of 26 kids before they died burned out in their late 20's - early 30's, of which about half (13) were girls.

Each of those followed a similar path, breeding with their fathers and brothers = 169 girls from the first generation.
Each of which followed the same path, breeding with their grandfathers, father and brothers, and the occasional stranger for a dime..
If it wasn't for the native American women, the nation would be full of deformed trolls and retards (then again they could only do so much ... )

By the end of the first hundred years, the female population was established with over 28,000 females, most of them in the population centers (of course).

Is this where the myth of British inbreeding comes from? In creating the Americans?

Of course, Canada and Australia was far worse with only 2 females each.

This also explains why deep within every Canadian is a love of Winter sports and a burning desire to eat narwhal.

As its clear that your governments' plans to pay European university grads to move to Canada in a forlorn attempt to raise the IQ of the sons of the 2 founding mothers is failing miserably, I'll attempt to clarify something for you.
I'll try to keep it simple, but no doubt I'll wizzz over your head (in an attempt to keep you interested - consider it a freebie).

As the two founding Mothers were undoubtedly whores who got pregnant from the syphilitic English and French aristocracy, they would have been deported to Canada (with all the sheep, pig and goat rapists) to avoid inheritance problems by getting rid of the aristocracies bastards before they were born.
So you are undoubtedly far closer related to your many times over cousin Charles than anyone in the UK:
Look in the mirror. NOW do you see the resemblance?

I do syphathise, and understand that given your history, handed down from father to brother/son/uncle and the simple fact that all your forebears who came from the UK were whores, animal rapists and inbreeds how you would think that it was a nation of such, but in actuality we shipped all we could catch off to the new world.

I also realise that the family bonds and urge to leap (hop, lurch or slither) to the defense of your country, tribe and 'family' (all interchangable) will of course be far far far stronger than a normal persons very strong natural urges to protect his family or tribe, and will take that into consideration.

While it isn't up to GoT production level, it is worth the watch, IMO. Heads-up, there is a History Channel version, and an extended one. The edited one is like Idol's secks life- lots of it, just no female bodies to be seen. Still plenty of blood, but we don't need to discuss Idol's orifices.

Vikings will return for a 3rd season on February 19, so it would be a decent time to start working through the other two.

Banshee very good.
Sounds terrible when you try to explain it.
A criminal does his time and comes back to Banshee, PA
to find his girlfriend. He stops at a bar on the outskirts
of town. One other customer. The other customer is
applying for Police Chief of Banshee. Bikers come in to
shake down the bar. The reformed criminal and police
applicant and bartender/owner go against the bikers.
The good guys win. The police chief applicant dies from
blood loss via a hole in his hand. The released prisoner
decides to become Police Chief.

The biggest criminal in town is a former Amish man named
Kia who backs a gambling strip club on Indian reservation
land. And there is also an Army Base nearby. And a big

Sorry if I offended you, I was just using the reference to compare the ratio of "WILD Beaver" population in America.... THATS ALL???

And there was no mention of inbreeding or incest on how your American population grows so fast either.

Fuck!!! As a proud Canadian with Jewish heritage I had to look up what the hell that word meant. You must have some inbred southern heritage in you to use it in a proper sentence.

But really if I was American I would have voted for George Bush too (I hope you did)

How can a state that grows the best Potatoes in the country , not be friendly???
But I did find this......
"In Idaho law forbids a citizen to give another citizen a box of candy that weighs more than 50 pounds. The city of Grace in the Gem Valley is most famous for their certified seed potatoes. Blackfoot is home of the Eastern Idaho State Fair."

This must help the ongoing obesity problem of the United States, but I never heard of Idaho being a mean state??

Well it is the start of a new show Season. Any recommendations so far?
Heroes Reborn first episode looked pretty good. Bringing back a few of the old characters and lots of new ones.
Just started watching Hand of God with Ron Pearlman. It is pretty good. Came out in the summer I believe.
The Last Ship that ran in the summer was also very good.
Of Course everyone is talking about Narcos for good reason. Great show!
Fear the Walking Dead is starting out a bit slow but hopefully the moment keeps building.

EDIT: Since my last post in this thread I have watched all the back seasons of "Sherlock"...only 3 Epi's per season, but a damn fine show! :) I really wish the U.S.A. would come up with more quality programs like that one! :)

(Not to mention Doctor Who production staff included in there.) ;)

Also it would seem "The Expanse" based on the excellent novel of the same name is drawing me in now too! ;)

I just want to say thank you to CW, I find all their shows incredibly entertaining and fresh. I don't know why I am posting this but, it really is true, I have recently become obsessed with Flash, Arrow and this show having resisted them thinking CW shows were cheesy or bad. Also My Ex GF and Jane the Virgin. Just wonderful.

While not art, Supernatural is miles beyond this dreck.

It gets bonus points for also never taking itself too seriously.

Japanese to English: Everything becomes F.

In the show, F represents the hexadecimal value of 15, but that isn't revealed until later. In short, it's about a brilliant young girl who fucked her uncle, killed her parents, and then plotted her escape from confinement 15 years later by making everyone think she was killed. In reality, she secretly raised her daughter, and then killed her. She had the body leave her locked down room on an automatic dumbwaiter, but only after chopping off her daughter's arms and legs to delay identification. On her way out, she also killed her uncle, who was still alive and overseeing the facility. The genre is supposed to be mystery.
