Enders Game is good. Its scifi, action. Haven't seen Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit yet, but it is rated 6.6. There aren't too many actions out in theaters right now.

One of his better filums, IMO. I had grown a bit tired of seeing him do the same role (essentially), so I put off watching it for quite some time. had few viewing options one night, and was pleasantly surprised. Mostly him doing his same role, but the show had a feel-good vibe amongst the machismo. Wife liked it a lot, too.

Also it's not "out right now",Jesus be praised.

Action film is a film genre in which one or more heroes are thrust into a series of challenges that typically include physical feats, extended fight scenes, violence, and frantic chases. Action films tend to feature a resourceful character struggling against incredible odds, which include life-threatening situations, a villain, or a pursuit which generally concludes in victory for the hero

Straight off the internet so it's got to be true.

Also epic in a comforting "no sense" sort of way that I'm pretty sure "epic" doesn't even begin to describe it.

So stuff like this I generally reserve my highest 10+/10 rating of awesomeness.

It's not technically an action movie, but You're Next has plenty of great action moments.

You know I had been avoiding watching this because the description..

"When a gang of masked, ax-wielding murderers descend upon the Davison family reunion, the hapless victims seem trapped... until an unlikely guest of the family proves to be the most talented killer of all"

..made it seem like just another forgettable low-budget spatter-fest directed towards the lowest common denominator but your post got me to change my mind and now I'm going to avoid it because you suggested it.:)

I've seen it several times and with each successive viewing the sense of how empty it actually is strengthens.Carano is great but not much else is ,especially how, owing to Soderbergh's direction, everything seems a tad off kilter.

So kinda both good and bad in being different.

I still go back to First Blood as a great action movie. The reason for me that this was so good is that you got to see the motivations behind the main characters and why they were actually doing what they did, instead of being meat puppets randomly running around shooting anything that moves for no particular reason.

The series took a definite nosedive into meat puppet land with the next installments, but the first movie was a refreshingly different action movie, and one where you felt the emotions of, and identified with the characters.

I hate to harp on about Jaws but it was just on TV and I re-watched it again and something that is oft overlooked in "action" movies is that what happens between the stunts is just as integral to the experience as when shit is blowing up.

Case in point

Wonderful how the scene changes from Quint and Hooper comically one-upping each other to one of abject horror.
Also notice how Spielberg chooses to keep Dreyfus in the frame but slowing fading into the background.
Things like that don't happen by chance.

If you had asked me 10 years ago I would have said yes as it basically made Spielberg's reputation. However I recently had occasion to rewatch it as it was on TV and I can say for a fact that it simply doesn't hold up.

Some people, not me,complain about Jaws being dated but Duel is vastly more so in both style and substance.

If taken as a segment of The Twilight Zone it would probably be OK but as a whole movie, way too archaic in a Coogan's Bluff, not so good sort of way.

OK it's still better than Lone Wolf McQuade but then you could say that about basically anything in comparison to any Chuck Norris movie.

By 20 minutes, I mean watched 5, then forced myself to continue thinking "It can't be this bad, can it?!!!". It was. The 6.2 rating on IMDB is seriously inflated.

Now you and philquad argue how Saving Private Ryan isn't a War movie as it's first tag on IMDB is "action" and Apocalypse Now isn't a War movie because it's too far-fetched.
As for some awards putting it in the "Action" category I'm going out on the making sense limb and say that's probably because there's no War Movie category to submit it in.:mellow:I'm also going to assume that if you're bright enough to understand that action movies can encompass various sub-genres so can War movies.

Anyway isn't genre simply a term for what a film best embraces? That's why The Warriors is a Western even though it isn't .

Action movies usually have some revenge aspect and like video games a bunch of minor boss fights leading up to a final one. That's why you can call Aliens "Action" even though it's set in outer space and why a lot of movies people have listed here aren't.

i second Equalizer, looking forward to the sequel. I thought Fury was quite good. (i quite liked David Ayers previous movie Sabatoge as well. ) and a slightly older one thats probably already been mentioned... The Raid 2.

The Raid movies were so good. The first one was very awesome and violent. The second one was even better.

I'm fluctuating between you merely lacking taste and you being borderline retarded. So I'm gong to do the fair thing and split and difference and just say that you're a borderline retard with no taste.:)

Taken 1 was sort of OK for a couple of lines and that it gave Liam Neeson the opportunity to be an action star but Taken 2 was so bad that I have no desire to ever see Taken 3.
Also a good movie is a good movie regardless of format so I guess that explains your need t see Taken in blu ray.

'John Wick' starring Keanu Reeves was surprisingly entertaining.

'Taken 3' was ok. It's the same thing as before but keep me out of mischief for an hour and a half.

You have extremely low standards and by "low" I mean none at all.

John Wicks on the other hand was pretty decent but the ovbious low budget and the stupid blood splatter special effect head shots every time he shot anybody was extremely distracting.

Equalizer is also worth watching. Watch Man on Fire and then try to make anyone believe that.

'Taken 3' was ok. Olivier Megaton could not frame or edit an action sequence to save his life. You'd think having been around Besson and Morel, some talent would have rubbed off on the guy. Taken 3's scenes are literally headache and nausea inducing. Guy needs to lay off the adderall before hitting the edit bay.

Great movie. Gyllenhaal is riveting. Real shame he wasn't nominated. All the nighttime shots look good, reminded me of Michael Mann's night cityscape stuff.

I hesitated on recommending Nightcrawler because I didn't expect others would enjoy it as much as I did. One of those, "Why did you tell me that was good?!?!" kind of shows. I'm glad I'm not the only one who found it interesting.

Gyllenhall's performance was quite good, IMO.

Far better than the overly-touted Birdman that I just finished. Well-acted, pretentious well-edited; shit story.

My takeaway was Ed Norton needs to act in more movies and Emma Stone should eat a sandwich (or 3).

BTW, any reviews that note the film's meta-commentary like it's some kind of profundity are just as annoying as those American Sniper meatheads.

Emma could have made the investment in time somewhat worthwhile by getting her tits out, but sadly, we didn't even get that for our efforts. And, yeah, I got the whole meta-actor thingy (they kinda beat us over the head with it, didn't they), I just couldn't give more than a 1/4 fuk about it.

I was busy putting together a toolchest when the movie finished, so the whole credits ran through. At the end, there was some blurb about how [this film provided hundreds of jobs, and required hundreds of thousands of man-hours to complete]. Like making a film is something above and beyond anything else. How about we start calculating the total man-hours it takes to put a pizza together- from growing wheat, to raising cattle, to pumping fuel for vehicles that were also driven by people, to curing the pepperoni, processing cheese from dairy products, growing vegetables, etc...

Self-important pricks.

I knew it would not be to your liking, Idol. The only counter to your comment is that the film stands as a critique of the industry, and its complete lack of ethics. Garbage in; garbage out. But who wants to watch a bunch of stories about kittehs getting rescued from trees?
