The Sochi Winter Olympics start tomorrow!

I can't speak for those outside the US but NBC will be broadcasting the games on a tape delay. It will also be broadcasted live online if you have a Cable/Satellite subscription.

Interesting article (http://www.nytimes.com/2014/02/05/sports/olympics/terrorism-and-tension-for-sochi-not-sports-and-joy.html?_r=0) on the safety of the venue chosen for the 2014 games.

To keep things positive, we can revel in the fact that Amurrica will probably sweep the Olympics even harder than last time since it's no longer in that frozen hell hole.

Also most importantly Amurrica will destroy those fucking Canucks and take what was robbed from us in Vancouver in the event that actually matters.

You mean curling?

I'll watch the cross country skiing because "country" sounds dirty.

And the short track speed skating because at least the midgets are upfront about their drug use.

Looks like the groups have you covered Idol: Winter.Olympics.2014.Cross.Country.Ladies.Skiathlon.HDTV.x264-2HD

I'm waiting for the women's biathlon caps. All prone in their tight little ski suits and rifles.

The first sweep however is for us, the Dutch. 1-2-3 in speed skating 5k. Nice going.

I'm not Dutch so "us" would be a misnomer.

Don't ever say "groups" in my vicinity unless you are looking to be met with ridicule.

Unless you mean "investment groups" of course in which case you will only be met with distaste. :)

Or musical groups and then I suppose my response would be all over the place.

Unless you mean Trance groups in which case I would probably try to find someone to punch in the face.

Duly noted.

That particular infringement collective seems bent on distributing the games unabridged.

I struggled for a euphemism with more panache. I'm no wordsmith.

I am interested to see how things pan out with the politics going on in the Russian front.

So the Winter Olympics continues to morph into a less profitable copy of the X Games.

Personally I would like the bankers in charge to take it even further into outright Red Bull territory, then extend the change into the Summer Games so that we can finally do away with archaic, spectator unfriendly stuff like discus and marathon and replace them with better stuff like airplane racing and cliff diving.

On a less serious note, competitions that are largely subjectively judged (ie Figure Skating,Half Pipe,Slope skiing/snowboard etc) are not so much sport as they are a performance art .
I suggest the winners don't get Olympic medals and are given Emmys and Tonys instead.

WTF is that double luge event all about, who on earth decided to suggest that 2 guys in the tightest of Lycra should lie one on top of the other facing up on a tea tray, go shooting down a mountain feet first at 60kph etc, and how awkward is that for the guy underneath, "Is that a pistol in your lycra or are you just excited to feel me on top Henrik?"

Some things just can't be unseen sadly.

There aren't enough actual Winter sports to make a good case for having a Winter Olympics so they had to get creative.
That still doesn't explain why there are all these weird ,artificial and slow strokes in swimming but they keep turning down my petition to make the three legged and potato sack races actual track events.

Maybe he's distressed over the fact that a bunch of commie loving socialists beat a group of freedom loving patriots in hockey today. :(

As expected the US womens team completely dismantles Sweden. Canada beats Switzerland as well, but perhaps a little more close of a game than people were expecting. A trio of goals in less than 4 minutes was a little too much for Switzerland to overcome even though their play wasn't as exceptional the rest of the game.

Also in mens hockey, a very interesting call by the refs that had huge implications for the rest of the tournament as USA went on to win the shootout: http://www.nbcolympics.com/video/refs-wave-tyutin-goal-russia

Curious if you had any thoughts on that call Idol?

I didn't watch as traitor that I am,I'm not really big on team sports.

Except for relays and the obvious NASCAR.

I didn't watch the entire game so I don't know if the score is a poor indicator of how the game went in general, but Canadia barely eeked out a win over Latvia 2-1 with a goal late in the 3rd.

However from what I did catch of it the Latvian goalie looked absolutely exhausted after stopping well over 50 shots to keep the game tied.

USA plays Canada on the 21st, it's a shame we couldn't end up on opposite sides of the bracket. :(

Canada is neither able to outskate or outwork most teams in the tournament and on the larger ice surface that counts for a lot.Just ask the Russians.

The Latvians did a very good job of collapsing in around their goalie and although that led to an unbelievable 90% of the play taking place in their zone,it didn't allow for many open shots and even fewer rebounds.Rebounds where the one thing the Canadians do have going for them, besides ice "smarts" ,size didn't come into effect.

Against the US who is again a better skating team,it likely will come down to who is more motivated. In the final, who knows?Who cares?
Personally I'm all for the egoless underdogs and at last count there weren't a lot of those left.

We won be the referee screwed the US with that lame slashing penalty in overtime so it was a tainted victory.

Hopefully the two teams will meet in the parking lot and settle it in a street fight like everything should properly be settled.

Rart

That slashing penalty was utter bullshit.

Regardless any penalty in a 4v4 OT makes for an incredibly flukey game. I am in support of having 4v4s for less ties in regular season (or in this case, qualification games) but it's in no way good for a championship game and this game is a perfect demonstration of why.

Just be thankful it didn't end in the abomination that is the shootout.

I don't know whether to blame greed or the US or the European's and their footbawl for the need to have artificially convenient outcomes for sports.
Just play the fucking game of hockey as God created it and may the best team win or die from exhaustion in the attempt.

We also won Curling so we won the two most or only important Winter Olympic sports.

PS fuck the X Games.

Wasn't able to watch the game live but I heard Canada outplayed the US in hockey and since Canadia pretty much owns hockey anyway I can't be too disappointed. Someone mentioned that if Canadia lost they'd go insane (see Vancouver riots) but when we lose it's just another friday.

Yesterday's lost still infuriates me though. The definition of refs deciding the game.

I was hoping a bit that the US would win so Canada would remain less arrogant. Then the Americans started chanting "U.S.A. U.S.A." and I decided nothing Canada does could be as annoying.

If it's any consolation, the Canadian team did the old " just sit back and play defense" at the end and gave the US every chance to win.

I guess they don't like gifts.

123 Russians in the boring nordic events

In all honesty, they only seem boring to you because you're a poofy little girl with the attention span of a hyperactive muskrat.

Consider the years of training and the pain endured and strategy of weighing that pain and whatever energy you have left against the scant hope of victory and the rest of the field and then take the Snowboard Half-pipe and shove it directly up your ass. :)
