View Full Version : Good Horror/Thriller Suggestions?

I am looking for a few good, truly scary movies, that are well filmed (no shaking cam type genre stuff ) with good acting and original story lines. ( or at least as much as is possible for a hollywood or indie release ) 2013 was a bad year for a good creepy show and what I have read and watched so far has left me wanting. IMDB is not to be trusted. I have no place to turn but here; for this can be, at times, one frightening forum. What better place then to get a few gems of possibilities. Obscure is most welcome... bear in mind I have seen most of the classics...

Cheers!

I am not a strong fan of the genre (mainly due to a high disappointment ratio*), but I do give it an occasional stab...

I'd suggest these for various reasons, mostly their attempts to be somewhat original.

No One Lives (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1763264/) (2012), The Conjuring (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1457767/) (2013), and Warm Bodies (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1588173/) (2013)

Are we talking The Shining scary,Marathon Man scary or Haute Tension scary?

Anyway you've probably seen them but two from Guillermo del Toro ,The Devil's Backbone and Chronos.

Thanks...

Saw Warm Bodies a few months ago... liked the love story zombie twist. The Conjuring didn't do it for me (or my companion rather) and I never saw it through to the end... might not have given it a real chance. I will try No One Lives. Read some of the reviews... looks like it could be worthy.

@ Idol
Yes I would say "a la, The Shining...
Your suggestions read well... no I have not seen them... for unfortunately, the company I am keeping does not care for subtitles (God Damn...The truth is... she's a red neck... what can I say...I am trying to up her game somewhat.... somehow she has a hold on me...)

The Exorcist

(...only if you've never seen it or read the book and have 5.1 audio copy, a decent system you can crank up the volume on it.) :alien:

(Scariest shit I have ever seen from back in the early '70's.) :alien:

Edit: (Sorry, I missed the classic bit in the op. Never mind.)

Most horror movies starting to get old and predictable. Horror games however much more thrilling being that you control the outcome of the situation.

Besides the fact that much of horror is basically derived from not being able to determine the outcome of a situation,I would suggest that since both the current take on horror movies and video games are targeted directly at the same demographic, your conclusion doesn't make a lot of sense.

Regrettably, people seem to forget that 99% of what makes up a good anything scare is the anticipation/buildup to the act (see something like Jaws) and not just a bunch of ludicrously unrealistic CGI bouncing around on screen.
Even someone like Guillermo del Toro who knows a thing or two about horror sometimes forget that and let everything go to fuck with something like Don't Be Afraid of the Dark.

If you begin at the summit then there's no place left to go but down and there is nothing more terrifying than the imagination.

Especially Mary's.

Yes, but I believe that the nun could have been a night nurse.

Isn't The Cabin in the Woods more a really black comedy with a really bad ending?
Also I know that there is no hard and fast rule for the term "cult classic" but I think it more lends itself to movies that didn't really find their audience on their first go around, usually because they reside far outside the box.

theres a movie on youchube
i think it was one of those made for tv movies
where sadistic man puts a wooden box on his wifes head and a puts a lock on it so she cant take it off.
and it just has 2 holes for her to see out of
witch he keeps locked in a room like silence of the lambs but in olden times america
then he rapes her sometimes when he wants to but he calls her bad things aswell and says she is the bad one
he is a religious man like a preecher or something and quotes things from the bible
and you are looking out of the box from her eyes like tomb raider as he rapes her
but without jumping up on things just in one room and no guns or tombs or swimmin
i just can't remember the name of it but it scared the shit out of me so much i was too scared to walk outside even to use the bathroom.

Cannibal Holocaust

This movie is filmed in documentary style; is a true full chapter in horror gore's history - ie a lot of cherry syrup :)) This is the movie that terrified a planet, not only by the bloody scenes as the question that it put to humanity so called modern man's civilization.

Dion you re such a fucking idiot it makes the part of my that isn't dead to the World laugh.
It didn't "terrify" anybody, that is the PR machine talking. At best it revolted a bunch of people and titillated a few weirdos with serial killer tendencies. The kind that are drawn to sick stuff like this or The Toolbox Murders or Men Behind the Sun or if they had the chance actual stuff films.

It takes zero and let me emphasize the zero, talent to film a bunch of things dying horrible deaths. That you fucking pea brain is not horror.

Cannibal holocaust is one sick sick movie. I have a tough stomach, but this one was yikes, silly and disturbing and the same time :S.

Serbian movie is another one. The whole thing is a metaphor how older generation damaged youth in Serbia during its Milosevich era, one of the most disturbing movies ever, even more than Cannibal holocaust.

I second this. Great film. In some ways, on the surface, it seems like it uses the same old monster in the house horror clichés, but the subtext is actually something new. And the ending is disturbing in the best way.

Some horror movies I've enjoyed recently (although you may have seen many of them):

Let Me In (2010)
Daybreakers (2009)
The Vanishing (1988)
Trollhunter (2010)
Black Christmas (1974)
Night of the Demon (1957)
House (1977)
Burnt Offerings (1976)
You're Next (2011)
Sightseers (2012)
Eyes Without a Face (1960)
The Woman in Black (1989)
The Legend of Hell House (1973)
Carnival of Souls (1962)
