I installed a Windows 8.1 torrent on my desktop, without problems.

On my laptop (with Windows 7), if I try to install Windows 8.1; it requests a serial number that I do not have.

Any advice?

I tried both- without updating and with updating.

You prob just grabbed the ISO. Try downloading one of the releases that says "pre-activated".

For example: Windows 8.1 U1 AIO 20in1 x64 en US Pre Activated DaRT 8.1 Feb2014-PTM

I have tried a number- here is an example of a pre-activated Windows 8.1.

What is the possibility to erase the whole disc, eg by DBAN and then try again?

That doesnt even have a release name so I cant do any research on what you grabbed. The prereleased versions will either skip the product key screen altogether or just allow you to enter all zeros. (00000-00000-00000-00000-00000)

The example also doesn't help. What does yours look like?

Rule 10 - Cracks/Keygens/WarezPosting of direct download links to copyrighted material such as private ftp sites, serial numbers, warez sites and torrentlinks are prohibited. Posts directly or indirectly containing this information will be edited. Sig2dat quicklinks and hashes are NOT considered to be downloadable and will be allowed. Don't ask for torrents, cracks, serials or keygens to be posted, you are asking someone else to break this rule. Hacking/Cracking discussions are not allowed.

Idol normally points this out, but he's dangling off a ballsack, or something ATM (not meaning at the moment :noes: )...

He's not discussing anything he shouldn't. It is 'File Sharing Talk' after all. I also get the impression his English isn't that good.

It has always been a fine-line sort of rule. I've always been better at breaking them than judging them... :)

It clearly has no clue what it's talking about either. You should be able to spot this instead of dismissing suspicion.

I'm not dismissing anything. I think most people post here because they don't know they're talking or need help. That's pretty what the forum is here for.

I think most people post here because they need help

They need help alright, but it's not for "installing a torrent".

Most of the population here need help with their priorities and mental health. When a legitimate hardware or software question is posed, the sincerity of the request is quite obvious. This is obviously not a sincere inquiry.

Content-wise, there's nothing wrong with torrents. Especially when grabbing something as prevalent as Windows.

Very inaccurate statement. In fact, many downloaded programs are easier to work with- as they do not have the bothersome DRM to fight with. The last time I tried to "go legit" with a totally bought-and-paid-for version of Window$, I gave up after calling their authorization # (over a period of 30 days, occasionally) and just ended up "authorizing" the thing myself. Much quicker.

Also, if one selects a well-tried torrent, often times, knowledgeable users will post regarding any troubles they had installing, as well as any solutions they found.

What happened with the original post? Let me guess, a link was edited into or something nefarious.

I don't believe calling Mary an "it" is appropriate, even if getting him fixed is a good idea.

The images are utterly useless. I'm beginning to doubt this thing even has a computer.

This is the second serious insult by mjmacky. First he called me a vague moron (edited) and the most recent one "I'm beginning to doubt this thing even has a computer."

I have found the solution in any case.
