Fx 5200 Good Enough?

i know livy posted a post comparing the 5200 to other but im thinking of buying this card. i was wondering if this is good enough to play most games today on high or med setting at 1024x768. i dont want to play doom3 or ne thing like that becuz im pretty sure doom3 is going to scare teh shit outa me.

so is it good enough to play games like bf1942 or splinter cell and games like that at med or high quality at 1024x768?

I'm pretty sure you can play all the games you want. Perhaps your gameplay would be improved with a more advanced card. It all comes down to budget.

my budget for the card isnt very much....actually its very little. i have about $80 left to spare for a card.

oh and the reason i want to play at the 1024x768 is becuz i have a lcd monitor ant tahts the max it can handle :(

i got a Asylum GeForce 5200 for bout $85(US), it runs nice and smooth, quite too...plays max payne 2 and vice city great...havent tried any others yet..

looked at some more reviews and ppl said that the 9000 pro was really fast adn ut2003 "flies" on that card. but the review i found were for the 128mb version. would my performance decrease that much if i bought teh 64mb version?

the gfx 5200 is fine for all the games. i have a AOpen Gfx 5200 128 mb. and it runs every game i have perfectly with everything on high. get it.

ok i was still unsure so i did some more research and found the 9000 pro 64mb did better then the 5200 in everything. in benchmark the 5200 got around 500. while the 9000 got a bit over 8000. and most games like ut2k3 the 9000 get about 20 more fps at 1024x768....so i guess ill got w/ the 9000

i just bought a FX 5200 with 256 and tried to play a new yet to be realized game and it could handle crap. I was dealing with 5-6 frames per second. Most of this was the game is not optimized but it wasn't a very good card so i returned it.

it's possible the rest of your system was proving a bottleneck and holding back the card

also, what game were you trying to play?

hey.. i have a FX 5200 and i play BF1942, it plays fine. There isnt any serious issues, unless your a FPS freak, But since i got this card for FREE (scammed a dumb PC buyer) i got a free upgrade fomr a mx440, but its not something i would higly recommend. I think you should get a ti 4800 instead of a 5200. If you can get a better card other than a 5200, but by all means get it.

at that resolution, i&#39;m getting around 50-70fps

yes it will slow it down...

your mobo only supports 4x agp and the card is 8x agp

yea.a a 4x mobo will only be able to extract memory at 4x speed. while a 8x mobo extracts, or uses if u will, memory at 8x

lol, when lamsey (the hardware king) says something, u listen. yea, most gaming companies will make their game so that they use the least amount of hardware to run, making a much wider market for high and low end comp users. so the gfx 5200 is perfectly fine for at least another couple of years.

maybe i am. no, i&#39;m not. lol. but yea, i got kotor last week, and i just got the radeon yesterday. i played kotor on the gfx at high with all the other stuff enabled, and it&#39;s perfect

i&#39;ve played ut2k3 at 2000x that other # resolution. works great. i get around 50-70 at least. and that&#39;s with everything on high too.

and no, i&#39;m not advertising. i&#39;m telling the truth to all this. besides, ut2k3 is old and the sys requirements were 32mb vd card. so, u know, there is no way this card won&#39;t run uk2k3.

i never played morrowind, but i&#39;m pretty sure those graphics aren&#39;t anywhere near those of kotor. so u&#39;ll be fine

and yea, almost all gfx 5200 regulars don&#39;t have a fan, only a heatsink. my heatsink is bigger than the one posted up there

and mine has DVI + Svideo + VGA

the up there only has Svideo and VGA

yea. some pny and asylum gfx 5200s might have a fan. but u dont really need one unless u oc it. i don&#39;t need to oc it, so i didn&#39;t. i prefer to let the buyer oc it to his/her needs.

screenshots will tell you very little of the gaming performance of a certain system spec

a better guage would be an ingame video, taken with a program such as FRAPS (however, the act of taking the video will slow down the system) :)

i get around 1400 on 3dmark03 with the gfx 5200 (not oced). it&#39;ll definetly be better than the mx440.

it play the first level fine at 800x600 w/ texture pack set to high. but then after the "escape pod" crashes and we have to go find that one lady in the alien city (level 2) it was unplayable....and i mean UNPLAYABLE . it was basically a slide show.

it play the first level fine at 800x600 w/ texture pack set to high. but then after the "escape pod" crashes and we have to go find that one lady in the alien city (level 2) it was unplayable....and i mean UNPLAYABLE . it was basically a slide show.

well. i had everything on high. and all the stuff enabled. and it worked fine. if u want like 2000+ resolution, maybe not. but for 800x600 to 1000 something, it should be fine.

meh, i disable the onboad sound and it ran smooth......y does onboard sound slows it down so much....time to get a new sound card.

but the fx520 doesnt play it ne higher then 1024x768? my mx440 pci already play it at 800x600 fine set on high w/o sound......so there isnt going to be a big improvement is there?

it can go higher. i never tried it with 1280x reso. but yea, it does ur reso pretty well

Onboard sound eats CPU time; a proper sound card takes a lot of strain off the CPU, thus improving performance.

Good gaming performance depends on balance - your motherboard, CPU, memory, video card, sound card, etc must all be of similar quality and speed for maximum efficiency.

I get very good performance out of my GeForceFX 5200+, because I have a well--balanced system - the DDR RAM matches the 2600+ CPU&#39;s FSB (333MHz), I use dual-channel RAM, etc. I also have a SoundBlaster Audigy 2, which is one of the best PC sound cards around (without going into the professional range).

Next time you think about getting a new video card, think about whether or not you really need it or if you might be better getting a new sound card, more RAM or something similar.
