I want to build me a living room computer. Can these parts be suitable? Should be able to handle mkv files etc ...

That will run/stream anything you throw at it. I have an HTPC in the living room and the bedroom and neither are anywhere near that good.

Have you thought of using a media player with a usb drive....it's a lot cheaper.

Actually, OP wants to stream HD porn too. Therefore, medial player won't be enough.

I ended up putting a i5-3570k in my HTPC (probably overkill).

I run xbmc so a raspberry pi 2 with openelec installed looks good to me.

Main thing for a "living room" pc is to use quite components, otherwise you'll soon get annoyed with the fans etc making noise... and of course an hdmi port on graphics card for easy tv connection
