Also it seems the icon will stay there even after you have reserved your install....but this is the winupdate that put it there

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3035583

Uninstall it and the icon goes away, you will still get the upgrade on July 29th.

I wanted to find an old Win98 VM for joke visual purpose, but vista is the earliest I could excavate :(

It's shit like that that keeps me from allowing their automatic updates. Self-important assholes. :swear:

EDIT- Didn't realize they were giving it away for free. Still not crazy about desktop popups.

Microsoft on Monday confirmed that Windows 10 will be released July 29 as a free upgrade for PCs and tablets running Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, and on new Windows 10 devices.[...]Users of Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 PCs and laptops have to register within one year to get the free upgrade. The Enterprise editions of these OSes don't qualify. Users of machines running Windows Vista or XP, or pirated versions of Windows, don't qualify either.

So much for you guys getting your first legal copies of Windows.

This AV should work under Win 10: http://nzbindex.nl/download/121674451/syma39339-0010-Symantec-Endpoint-Protection-12.1.6168.6000-FirstUploads.nzb

Not saying my OEM licence is bad but I seemed to qualify..... got me worried now. I`ll have to update my clone machine first (done for the 8 to 8.1 update) and see if that works :)

I have a legal copy on the gaming computer I built a while ago.
After spending over two grand on the other stuff saving an additional hundred dollars didn't seem worth the potential downside.

I have semi-legit Windows 7 on both my laptops, but both were Windows 7 Home versions & I used pirated codes to upgrade to the Ultimate versions. I wouldn't care about it, but I use Desktop Remote a lot & you can't remote in to a Home version machine. I know there are other remote programs you can use for free (Like Teamviewer) but I prefer Remote Desktop, as it's so simple & easy to set up/use.

Now desktops are another story. I have 2 of those, & neither have ever had legit windows on them...

That's not the only limiting factor in Windows 7 home (premium) (or not so premium in this case....), the weirdest limitation is that it will only use a maximum of 16gb of RAM. If more is installed it will see it but it is 'unavailable', forcing gamers or content creators who use more RAM to purchase a more expensive edition. One plus about Windows 10 is the feature limitations that were used in order to gain extra revenue with Windows 7 have gone, along with minesweeper, solitaire and the Windows Media Center.
