It took such a long time to get here given 3 years of steadfast intent, but I am home.

I have been flooded with so much input that I can't even parse all that has me smitten about this setting.

I'm abandoning the departure thread because my shared thoughts are focused on the life of the immigrant rather than of the emigrant.

With the exception of camping, I have never spent the majority of so many consecutive days outdoors. In Florida and Colorado, I rarely desired going out... I had to force it. Here, work and sleep are probably going to be the only things to keep me indoors for more than a couple hours at a time. At least, I see it being that way for the next couple of months.

Context: I am in Taito-ku, which is one of the 23 wards of Tokyo. Within Taito-ku or Taito City, I am in the Matsugaya district, which is in between Ueno and Asakusa districts. It's lively, everywhere. You can pretty much go 6 blocks in any direction and feel like you've hit the center. It's simultaneously quiet away from the bigger roads. It's strikingly clean. I'm already trying to figure out how I can stay here forever or at least two years.

Have you ever walked around holding in a joyous shout of celebration that would be followed by song and dance if you ever let it out? That's how I've been feeling. When I lose concentration, I find myself mistakenly bearing a big, stupid grin. The signs, the interactions, the mental notes and planning, I'm getting it from all angles.

That's about 0.02 people every square meter, which takes about 12 cuts per person and considerable arm muscle stamina.

I can see that though because there aren't many high-rises in this part of Tokyo. I always thought population densities should be expressed per unit area and per unit volume based on average building height or something similar.

I've spent the week walking and riding around without giving my body much time to recover. I've been trying to look up some legit massage places, and I decided to go with traditional Thai massage.

I know how that sounds, but they're supposed to be like lazy yoga sessions with lots of stretching. I figured with the training involved and such that the place would be legit. It was for the hour massage that I requested. Walking 100 km over the past week has done a number, and I think this will help recover.

Toward the end she started pulling on my dick and signaling 3000 extra yen. I've always turned down these extra services, but things get very tense after that, and if they were good at the massage, it turns to shit after declining the upsell.

I said yes this time, so I got my first paid hand job today. It was nice for the first minute, but I was pretty bored with it after about five minutes. At that point, I thought, fuck it, and directed her hand to firmly grip as much of my sack as possible and the I finished the job myself.

This sucks because now I have to find a different place.

I wonder if I can part time as a gigolo. Maybe I could find a sugar mama, quit my actual work and explore Japan full time. Problem is that I actually like my job, and going a long period without mental stimulation just wouldn't work.

Those musings mean that it was a serious thought.

Well, now that I've broken bad, I'm going to look into something more satisfying. The massage may have been great, but I wasted $30 on an unsatisfying and unexpected handy. I just can't let that be my only hop in the fray, especially when there seem to be so many attractive escorts ready to bathe me, piss on me, and bathe me again.

Has anyone else undertaken the task of studying multiple languages over their lifetime?

I was having a difficult time remembering the days of the week in Japanese until I took a systematic approach behind their meanings. I finally conquered it, and then I forgot how to say most of them in Serbian. This is strange to me because I used to be able to say them with a natural sort of feeling, whereas I struggle to recall them in Spanish and German and my ability to recall them hasn't really changed.

What's going on here?

I can say "Get the fuck out of my fucking way, you fucking asshat" in Italian because I used to race bicycles and sadly, you can't always count on a thrown water bottle hitting someone in the head.

Assuming you're comfortable with French, or even with English for that matter, can you imagine coming up blank for a word just because you worked so diligently at cementing the same word in, let's say, Arabic? That seems a little crazy for me, granted I haven't used it in like 4 years, but still. It's like forgetting how to count...

This is strange to me because I used to be able to say them with a natural sort of feeling, whereas I struggle to recall them in Spanish and German and my ability to recall them hasn't really changed.

What's going on here?

It happens, if you've studied them intensely during, say, a year, and then cease using them. If you've kept at it for far longer, it's much harder to lose a language, however. I've also found that with a second language, my accents can change and fluency, or rather flow, can come and go fairly rapidly, depending on how much I use it.

I studied norwegian, danish, russian and english in an organised setting, with the aim of being able to speak them, and on top of that I studied japanese and dutch on my own.

Added to that I've had classes on finnish grammar, and absorbed enough out of several other languages to have a basic vocabulary, and use simple sentences in each.

These days the only languages I am fluent in are swedish and english, and my english accent has gone from eton-ish (the version I was primarily instructed in), through welsh-seeming (the welsh intonation is closer to my native dialect, and I wasn't speaking much english), into a heavily accented mess, and then, in around six months time into something somewhere between GA and some unspecified canadian accent (I now live with an american woman, but there's something about how canadians use their vowels, that rhymes with my native tongue).

I lost norwegian and danish, because I speak swedish, and what with swedish, norwegian and danish being close enough to be nearly be dialects of the same language, I didn't need the others, and they fell out of use. I still understand them just fine, I just don't use them back.

I lost dutch (though I can understand it somewhat, still), because I didn't need it at all, so got no practice.

I lost russian, because who the hell needs russian.

I lost japanese through lack of practice, though I could probably have kept it if I'd have stuck with the anime.

When I say lost, I'm not saying I don't understand one iota, but I don't really understand everything anymore, except in the case of danish and norwegian, where I understand, I just can't pronounce.

edit: I should note that I seem to be genetically predisposed for learning languages (my sister speaks japanese like a native, according to natives, after a relatively short period of studies, to name but one example), so I never had to work very hard to pick up a language, when I did, and because I didn't need, or engaged in, many exercises with repetition in mind, maybe it didn't settle in my long term memory very well, as it were.

If you're like me, maybe you need to put in more work at grinding in what you know in serbian, through repetition. But then again, your wife was serbian, so idk :idunno:

Well, it's sort of something I took for granted. I had never used any except one of the languages I studied in the past for practical purposes, so I understand forgetting vocabulary in those. However, I had used Serbian for over a decade, so I didn't expect to suddenly forget common words so easily. I'm mostly wondering if it was possibly specific memory displacement.

It was just a little unnerving, and I was walking around with a cigarette not fully prepared to research it.

I could appreciate having that ability, but I'm not very good at picking up tongues. Even in English, if you pronounce a word or sentence slightly different than I'm expecting, you'd probably have to repeat it several more times before I give up and ask you to write or spell it. I said "What?" quite frequently as a kid and I used to mumble before I began forcing myself to enunciate.

It shouldn't be surprising that I study pronunciation straight from textbooks. I usually end up with either good pronunciation or a very ambiguous accent. Actually, it's the same in English, for I've been asked if I have an accent in English on occasion. It reminds me of...

She isn't ultra religious, just crazy with the guns and phobias of Muslims and North Koreans (well the latter can be justified with some effort), etc., not that it makes a difference.

I've never seen a cute guy in all my existence. However, I have seen some cute penis-bearing transitionals, so that'd be the closest I think I could get to marrying a dick wielder.

A cute face is about the most important thing for initial attraction. My man crush on Paul Rudd, on the other hand, has nothing to do with cuteness, but it's just the face I would prefer to have if given the option. That stands out to me because I prefer how I look to just about everyone.

Seriously though, you've been in Japan for like a month now so how many samurai have you seen and how many people's heads have they chopped off because they've offended their honour?

If it's less than 12 I'll be seriously disappointed.

Notice I didn't ask how many ninjas you've seen because any ninja worth his salt is not going to let himself be seen.
You'll be disappointing. No gerund intended.

Another boring detail is that I wanted to try on festive wear. On the day I went to buy a yukata, I couldn't bear the thought of wearing long sleeves, so I got a low priced jinbei instead.

Is that not the dress code to work in the Opium Poppy fields:unsure:
Only proper way to explain is through pictures, so a to do for later.

Unrelated to me given that I haven't been in Florida for about a year.

Actually, I still belittle Floridians. You see, they linked all the bulletin board systems together, and they're always on. So, my condescension stick reaches all the way there from here, and I drain their patience. I drain it up.

I also liked the Rob Zombie remakes as well...
But by far i still think Black Christmas was one of the best horror films made, and of course it was filmed in Toronto Forest Hill :D

My brother decided to keep growing a beard through the pregnancy. It apparently irritates his daughter, so he's keeping it. We're kin after all.

My sister in law wanted me to put on a nice shirt for some photos before I left. I didn't bring many nice shirts, so I brought out my jinbei top and said, "I could wear a dress shirt or I could wear this," and the resounding reply was "that!"

But of course is what you're now thinking.
