Just wondering if SSL is still good to rely on to hide data traffic.

Yes, as long as your client and news provider are both patched to prevent the TLS attacks discovered during the last years.

With that said, unless your ISP shapes traffic or you're downloading from an insecure network, there's little need to encrypt your traffic in the first place.
