I have heard about this YT IDM down loader. But didn't use it yet. Wish I could try for it.

Should be enough for most. jDownloader gives you more choices like downloading 4K, 3D, subtitles, audio stream only and so on.

I can’t use any software to download YouTube video, I just use some website to download and keep safe my devices form extra load. You can also try with following website.
• https://sconverter.com

YouTubeDL GUI. This is the wrapper GUI for the famous python script. It makes everything easy. Just remember that if you encounter any errors to Update within the GUI. Been using it flawlessly for years and it supports downloading entire playlists. https://github.com/MrS0m30n3/youtube-dl-gui

The most recommended plug-ins for Firefox suit me, but then I mostly only want the audiobooks- which have to be re-encoded in Opus to get the insane file sizes down to something reasonable. I have noticed if the Youtube vid is set to 'automatic rez' the download plugin often fails.

It seems that Youtube is constantly rethinking how the vid files are stored and streamed. Sometime my downloads are 0.5 realtime (1 second for 2 seconds of video) and then they can rocket to full bandwith download speed (which I never understand why Google allows). I do know for better quality, the browser plug-ins are constantly failing, and then adding essentially paid functionality to re-allow the feature.

But the good thing about the Firefox plug-ins is how many other video sites they work flawlessly on. And on those 'other' sites, they frequently bypass all the rogue 'pop-up' ad crap.

However, that YoutubeDL GUI spaceinator kindly mentioned sounds like my kind of app. I'm always feeling guilty for not making enough of an effort to find and deploy these *proper* solutions rather than using lazy compromised browser plug-ins.

Be sure to give jDownloader a try too. The amount of options available for YouTube are amazing. You can pick the quality, framerate, container and codec you want, download the audio track only, and even grab subtitles.

This is the best one thought you need to use a CLI.

There is a GUI wrapper for youtube-dl creatively named youtube-dlg (https://www.videohelp.com/software/Youtube-DLG). It makes it a bit easier to use for doofs like me who can't remember all the cli switches to activate the good features.

Except for zone-restricted videos, there's nothing I haven't been able to grab yet.

Using a proxy from a whitelisted country is the only workaround I've found so far. You can't simply paste these in jDownloader or youtube-dl and be done... unlike with age-restricted and VEVO videos :)

Snaptube is a nice Youtube downloader if you're using Android. I use it for a year now and it is best out there so far, you can even download videos from other websites.

+1 for jDownloader. At first, I used it to download from DDL sites only. Then one day I discovered YouTube in the supported websites list under settings/plugins menu. I was greatly impressed by its youtube functionality and used it since then.

I'm currently using this method, since it's easier than anything else.

If you add raw=1 to the query string, you get redirected straight to the video stream... there's also a local parameter which can be true or false (not 1 or 0, confusingly) to proxy the video through Invidious or not, and quality which can be one of dash, hd720 or medium.

Can also be used from a terminal.

wget "https://invidious.snopyta.org/watch?v=q6o49pbJaDo&quality=medium&local=false&raw=1"

Adding &listen=1 downloads the audio track instead. Neither preserves the original name, but at least they'll work if you can't or don't want to install anything.

You can just add 5s at the end of the youtube in your URL. That's what i use for gathering stuff for editing most of the time. ClipConverter is decent if you want to snag a small clip of a massive video too.

MediaHuman YouTube to MP3 Converter, free and works like a charm to grab music without the video's.

Two layers of lossy transcoding, but if you're ripping music from YouTube you probably don't care about that :turned:

As for the trick in post #47, Google started cracking down on Invidious instances some months ago, but seems to have quickly abandoned targeted efforts, so it should still work (the one at snopyta.org is still blocked most of the time, though).

I used youtube-dl until it was abandoned and then I moved to a fork of it called yt-dlp.
Command line programs can be a pain to use, but this one is very popular so plenty of google results to help get the settings how you want. And so far yt-dlp is updated pretty frequently.
Once you learn it, it is very powerful - and works for many more sites than just YT.
