I think i may be in the minority, but i think Underworld was a really good film. Don't go into it expecting an epic movie, but it is fun nonetheless.

I don't know I don't like bloody sci-fis (may be I have a too cool temper for it) If you like to see some try in the findhash catalog under sci-fi.

my favourite sci-fi movie series of all time is the CUBE series:

Cube
Hypercube: Cube 2

full of suspense and really blows the mind. i'm really impressed with this movie. they had such a low budget and the first one was shot in a warehouse. it's a good idea to watch them in the dark.

The first two Alien movies are really good.
Equilibrium is kind of sci-fi with some great action scenes.
I also really like the movie Event Horizon for some reason, I guess its just really creepy.

I saw Gattaca mentioned, if you want sci fi for the same kind of mood you should check out Cypher. Itīs not a bloody or creepy film, but good nonetheless.

i have a penchant for classic films and these two are my favorites

1. Them (1954) IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0047573/)

2. The Thing from another world (1951) IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0044121/)

number two was remade by john carpenter in 1982 (listed above) i like the original better, dont get me wrong, im still a big fan of the modern day horror movies, but i seem to like the older stuff a little better.
