I think I have the three computers in my home office correctly
connected
via my router that is also connected to my cable access modem. They
would
not show (on my workstation desk top "my network places>view work group
computers") as part of my workgroup if they weren't connected properly
is
my reasoning.

Let's call my main workstation desk top, Computer A. (XP Home O/S) Let's call my alternate desktop, Computer B. (XP Pro O/S and is also on a VPN to employer server with
other remote computers) Let's call my lap top that will be sometimes disconnected from network by removing the ethernet cable going to the router, Computer C. (Windows-ME O/S)

Using A, I go to "my network places>view workgroup computers". All
three computers are shown. However, If I double click on B, I get a window
to enter a USN and PW. I enter the USN and PW I am on B and hit enter. It just re-displays the window again. If I double click on C, I get a window that says, "\\jump6 is not accessible. You moght not...The network path has not found."

All the computers have been configured to share files and drives and all users have admin status as best that I can determine.

go to network connections and then view the properties of your connection.

make sure you have file and print sharing for microsoft networks
client for microsoft network
qos packet scheduler
and tcp/ip

as your selected protocols, or install them with the install button.

I also found I had to install the netbui protocol aswell to get my network up and running. As an aside, I assume that the actual drives on each m/c are shown as being shared through windows explorer.

I know its not much but it may help.

you were probably using a win 98 machine in your network. xp does not use that any more.
