Hey guys, I just wanted to share my experience with torrenting and fines for copyright infringement.
I moved to Germany few months ago and I didn't knew here torrenting is taken so seriously and you can get huge fines. In my home country - Poland nobody cares that you are torrenting or whatever, but in Germany it is the opposite.
So I had to pay the fine (sadly), but I didn't want to stop torrenting so I got myself a VPN. I guess many of you should know what a VPN does, so I won't explain. But I will surely recommend people getting one, especially if they are living/traveling/moving to countries that have strict laws against torrenting. If you need recommendations I am using Surfshark.

Not sure how long you been Torrenting,a Seedbox& VPN are a marriage made in heaven a MUST, IMHO if you are serious about Torrenting.
The Seedboxex have a proxy address too and furthermore, with a VPN you can obviosly access more Trackers [ public] too.

P.S. - Especially, with Porn XXX they are notorious in catching anyone that violates their copyright. In my eafly days of torrenting, they will report thay back to my ISP,and
if my ISP gets too many of those complaints, they have the right to bump me off...:O:naughty:

I am surprised that people use Bittorent anymore. Without a VPN you are broadcasting your IP for the world to see.

Without VPN, at least, use a SOCK5 anonymous proxy outside your own country

Only if your country gives a fuck about torrents and copyright infringement in the first place :stuart:

::shrugs:: I torrent without vpn, proxy, or anything in the USA for more years than I can count
I suppose it depends on the site you use...
I do not do this with public sites, or most sites, but I do with my primary site and have since joining it sometime around 2008?

Thank you for sharing. I've been putting this off for years.

Using a VPN with torrent has become second nature. I always make sure that I'm using only that connection in my client & verify with ipleak.net before I begin downloading.

It also depends on what you download. If you grab the newest blockbuster movie or popular TV show or hit album, then there is a much greater risk of getting notified.

My brother got a letter from C0mcast a few years ago when he downloaded a single Eminem song. Not sure if Eminem pursues it, his management, or label.

I used the SOCKS5 proxy that is available for my VPN for a year, I have not received a notice.

Proxies only support TCP connections and make you unconnectable by design, so you'll have a harder time uploading. Keep that in mind.

I got on the NordVPN bandwagon a few years ago and it has served me quite well. Before that I didn't use a vpn and was a sucker for public trackers, but when I found https://iknowwhatyoudownload.com I knew I had to make some changes because it's scary how accurate that info was.

A friend of mine downloaded Interstellar in Germany and he got fined 1300€. Then, he rewatched it in Austria with Popcorn Time. He got fined again, 1200€. A law firm handled the case. The complaint has been made by Warner Bros.

Ha ha, that's awesome! Note that the DHT activity they use as a basis for their results is not hard evidence of having actually downloaded or uploaded those torrents, but it does give an idea of what's going on and how easy it can be to build individual activity profiles.

Also, this sort of snooping has another, benign usage - DHT-based torrent search engines like DIGBT and BTDB. :)

Not much they can do and keep tabs as long as they want, using a VPN or some kind of proxy or Seedbox, shields one from all that, as long as the VPN does not keep logs.

Just suicidal to play around with torrents without the layer of protection, eventhough VPN definitely slowwwwwwww.. down your speed

Yes, Surfshark is a good VPN for torrenting and Netflix as well. Also, it supports Kodi, Hulu, BBC iPlayer and other VoD services. So, it's good for streaming lover because it provides blazing fast server so you can watch your favorite movies without buffering. Check out its review with speed tests here (https://www.vpnranks.com/vpn-reviews/surfshark/).

Setup your own torrent box using guides on youtube. My one runs off an ODroid C2 and IPVanish VPN (up in the loft/attic and out of the way). Once you`ve set it up you can down all the crap you want and seed away without messing up your main PC

Most of the torrent sites are banned in my country but I found a way out. I have been using Opera browser that has a free, built-in VPN. So I am still able to download from torrent sites.

Eh, Opera went downhill after the switch to Chromium's engine, and hit rock bottom with the Qihoo buyout. I recommend Tor Browser, then you can reach The Pirate Bay at http://piratebayztemzmv.onion/. Better than any proxy, since it's actually run by them.

I need to find something to use in the states to protect me when using torrents now. Never have had an issue but I downloaded a movie a few weeks ago and got a notice from my isp saying that I had received strike 1 or something to that sort because I had downloaded or somebody using my internet had downloaded something that was copyrighted.

TorrentFreak's list of recommended VPN services hasn't been updated for 2020 yet (and PIA still tops last year's). This one is generally considered to be accurate and unbiased.

Some friends have recommended Windscribe and ExpressVPN to me. TPB apparently vouches for AzireVPN, which explicitly allows torrents, by linking to them at the bottom of their homepage.

I really don't understand why people still use torrents, but a VPN will spoof your IP address. However, if they keep logs, a dogged infringement prosecutor can still find you, plus you have to pay for a decent VPN. Better off going with paid newshosting service and using nzb's.

nyaa.si and pornolab.net don't really have a Usenet equivalent :(
