View Full Version : Roxio Over-burn

skelley521

I was cleaning up my hard drive so I made a direct cd (incd for Nero users).
I wasn't paying any attention to to files that I was dragging and dropping, but when I was done it said that there were 9 MB left so I closed the cd.

I ejected the cd and placed it back in (just to check the integrity before deleting the files off my hard drive) and I noticed that the size of the disk is 1.34 GB.
All the files are accessible, but they do load and install a little slower.

The only thing I can think of is that direct cd must have compressed the disk.

This is the largest over-burn for me yet, I just wonder if I could have gotten the other 9 MB on the disk... :D

You got over a gig on a 700mb disc. That's highly unlikly, did you check to see if the cd's ok.

The max is 800mb, and that is startching very far. Only audio and video can do that.

yea video I get over 800 every day, you can up to about 810 any thing after it might not be successful, but should still play in most starndard dvd players

I'm not sure that inCD is properly recognized by windows. It might have miscalculated. I don't think inCD uses disk compression as it's supposed to emulate a regular hard drive and it would have to be compressed after writing, just like a hard drive.

It may of burnt but that dosent mean it came out ok.

I made a direct cd 'not' incd and yes roxio allows compression.

It may of burnt but that dosent mean it came out ok.
I stated that all files are accessible, but they just take longer than normal to install.
They are all applications that I have downloaded and most are normal files.

Why use Direct CD with a CD-R?

It's for CDRW discs. In fact how did you format that CD-R in order to use Direct CD?

Listen! ...
Dont tell noone what you did, write to the registry office, state your discovery, release a guide on it and sit back, reaping the benefits ...

Or just give you monitor a hard slap just under the vertical center and you should see its true value. But yeah, its strange, amazing and lucky you :)

Cheap memorex advetising though, ah I get it ... you work for them?

I always use Direct CD with my CD-R's, it just makes them like a large floppy.
I inserted a blank CD-R and format and name the CD.
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-7/277452/format.jpg

Then I drag and drop files to the Direct CD icon.
Open

or minimized

Roxio uses the UDF file system. Once the disk is full you have the option of closing it to .ISO or leaving it .UDF. When you insert it in another PC that doesn't use Roxio and it's in the .UDF format it will tell you that it needs a .UDF reader and do you want to install the reader. So to do away with the hassle I just close with .ISO.

If I needed another house I would take that bet :D

I have tested the cd by re-installing over half of the apps. and all is good.
I was surprised also, the only thing that I can think of is that the files are are folders with program+fix and Roxio must have compressed them.
I did try this with .avi's, but it didn't work.

This interests me, skelley521. You have used Direct CD in a way I have never tried. I always used them on CDRW discs. I also believe that the facts you are posting are as they appear on your PC.

I would be curious to see if you copied all the files from the CD onto your hard drive what capacity would it show then.

I will try some experiments concerning this subject.

Place a blank CD-R in your burner, open the menu and select format.
Type the name that you want and hit return....all done.
The CD-R is now like a large floppy, you can write to it at any time until it is full (you can also remove it and add to it later), then when you want to close the disc, hit eject then the advance tab and select .iso format so you dont have to install a udf reader on your friends 'puters.

edit: when you want to leave it open so you can add to it later, just select ok on the eject screen. Only go to the advanced tab and select .iso when it is full.

it is possible with easy cd and dvd creator6, its called drag to disc and it uses a cdr as a floppy, it will only be recognised in a cd burner until it is closed ;) i still dont see how its poss to get such a huge amount on one disc, perhaps when it was writing the disc info it just put the total size of the files he dragged to it but didnt actually write that amount, ive had discs stuff up at the start of burn process just after writing disc info and it aborts, nothing has actually been written to it yet but the properties of the disc say that it is full. i dont think that there actually is that amount on his disc it just says so ;) i dont think he is lying at all, its just one of those " i cant believe it, i gotta share this with everyone" sorta things :D

chill people, chill :P

from roxio site faq's

Drag-to-Disc

Q. What is Drag-to-Disc?
A. Drag-to-Disc, formerly known as DirectCD, is a powerful application that allows users to easily record data to CD or DVD. Drag-to-Disc uses a technology that allows users to treat their recordable drive just like a floppy drive. Users can drag and drop files, rename, move, and delete files directly on the disc, as well as using the "Save As" command within many applications to save files or projects directly on to the disc.
Q. What is new about Drag-to-Disc?
A. The new Drag-to-Disc automatically formats the disc when inserted, in turn making this the most seamless, easiest way to store data on a recordable disc.
Q. Can a user restore files from within Drag-to-Disc?
A. A user can drag and drop files out of Drag-to-Disc, or cut and paste, just like they can with a floppy disc.
Q. Doesn't Windows XP have similar drag-to-disc functionality? What's the difference?
A. Windows XP has a "staging area" where files are stored before actually burning them to disc. This results in an additional step in the burning process. Because of the way XP burns to disc, more space is used by XP than Drag-to-Disc when saving files to disc.
Q. Can a user record audio CDs with Drag-to-Disc?
A. Drag-to-Disc is designed to record data files rather than audio tracks. Any audio files burned using Drag-to-Disc will be treated as data files.

Just copied all the files back to my hard drive and windows reports it as the same size as I stated. One of the programs is Snagit 7 so I upgraded from 6 and it has a nice new interface and the quality is better.

Thats hella dum only those people with that drive can read it. If you made a VCD it would not work. :(

very few dvd burners can actually create HD-Burn CDs, but a lot of DVD-Roms actually have the potential to read them-- the manufacturers just need to modify the firmware to add read support.

so far, these are the dvd burner models i've been able to find, that can make HD-Burn CDs.

Optorite DD0203, DD0201, and DD0401
Sanyo CRD-BPDV2
MSI DR4-A and DR8-A

Plextor have a similar technology called GigaRec on some of their drives, but it only stretches an 80minute CD to about 1gb.

and increasing the capacity of a format through a more efficient disc layout is not "hella dum."

lol, yeah. it doesn't sound like cd-roms can have HD-Burn read support added to them, so basically this is just a way to use CD-Rs as "sort of like" 1.4gb DVDs.
