What software should a newbie use? I did some searching & see a few options like Emule. I have never used this type of software before.

What kind of content are you interested on, and what are your downloading habits? For instance, the aforementioned eMule is known for its good retention of old files (even if interest has been decreasing lately) and long waiting times for downloads. Few would use it as a "normal" way of getting the latest movies and music, even if it's possible to do so.

Your location says United States, are you willing to invest a few bucks a month on a good VPN or seedbox? Because if you don't, it may not take long until you get your first DMCA letter.

I use usenet now,but there are a few things I cannot find even after requesting them. I would like to use a VPN. I'll try whatever software & VPN you suggests. It sounds like you know what your talking about. Thank you.

Alright, let's see...

BitTorrent. Public and semi-public trackers like The Pirate Bay, Demonoid, Zamunda and RuTracker are most likely to have elusive files (RuTracker in particular is considered to be among the biggest and best sources of any kind despite its Russian language interface), but also nearly guaranteed to be monitored. Private trackers also exist, but usually require you to find an invite and enforce a minimum share ratio. qBittorrent is a good client.
eMule. Get a good server list and IP filter from https://emule-security.org/, read the official documentation to get an idea of how it works, then search for the stuff you're looking for and (if it's there) be patient.
Warez-BB.org. A huge forum with DDL links. Their sheer size, request section and the relative safety of file hosting links (no uploading is required) makes them very much worth a mention even though they're not actually P2P.

As for VPNs, I don't use any since my country doesn't care about filesharing, so I can't make any personal recommendations, but I can link you to this (https://torrentfreak.com/best-vpn-anonymous-no-logging/) and offer some general advice. Private Internet Access was bought by a shady company recently. NordVPN and any other providers that don't have port forwarding won't be good for P2P (for eMule in particular this is virtually mandatory). Some friends swear by Mullvad and Windscribe. You're welcome ;) One more thing: if you still don't manage to find the stuff you're looking for, you can start a thread here and others will try to find it.

I had tried requesting before with zero results, but I will try again if I can't find what I am looking. I wish there was an indexing site for torrent. I have no idea what is available.
