hell yeah.. i got this today The_Doors-Complete_Studio_Recordings-7CD-1999-KSi

from the nfo:
As the title says, The Complete Studio Recordings contains
all of the Doors' studio recordings in one convenient box
set. All six of the band's studio albums have been given
24-bit remasters, and the lyrics for all the albums are
included for the first time. Also, a couple of minor edits
on The Doors have been fixed Jim Morrison's vocals at the
end of "The End" are brought up in the mix, and his
exclamation of "she gets high!" on "Break on Through" has
been restored. The box set includes a seventh disc comprised
of nothing but rarities, including some live cuts. -AMG
This Box Set is great for any Doors fan. The studio albums
are not simply repackaged versions of the older releases but
remastered for the first time, enhancing the experience of
the songs

Very slow my friend.. it was my plan to 'restart' this little project, but with a twist. The New Release List was just the start. I was thinking bigger and better. However, I have so much going on, and so little free time.. i'm not sure if this project would ever get off the ground.

Basically, I wanted to start a KLF ripping group, similar to iRO which would specialize in older rips, in high quality, 192k format. No VBR shit here! Anyway, I have an mp3/nfo release kit, and a tutorial for making high quality rips. I don't use the tutorial on this forum because I think its wordy and obsolete. Also, it is very hard to get consistent results with PROPER TAGGING using that method.

Anyway, the ripping group would be highly competitive, which means set rules would be used to keep quality as our highest priority. NFO/SFV/m3u files would be required for all rips (my ripping pack does this for you) and EAC/Lame for ripping/encoding. This group would require member participation including listening and evaluating others rips for quality, and possibly even writing small reviews to be included within the NFO's, as well as ripping music.

Someone would also be responsible for inputting these rips into an ongoing database using OrangeCD which FC has convinced me is superior. After playing around for about a week, I believe FC is right.

If you are still reading this, and you don't know what to do with SFV/NFO/M3U files, or you are not sure why you would want them, then this group isn't for you. If you are going to steal music, do it RIGHT! This group is for rippers and reviewers who insist on high quality rips, tagged properly and free for evaluation, and we ask nothing in return except your participation.

Still interested...? Well, its a thought I've been messing with for a while now... I don't have the time to run a group like this on my own.. but if the members here were to show enough interest, I'm sure I could point you in the proper direction.

I assure you, ripping CDs is very easy... most mistakes aren't even made by the user, but by the users choice of software. For example, EAC cuts off the end of long filenames/songs due to a restriction in the way it edits the tag. Alot of scene groups use EAC, but fail to re-tag the files properly after.

Anyway, membership has its privilages... nothing good comes from leeching.. we would all need to contribute.. It will prolly be a while before this project gets off the ground... but I wanted you all to know what I was thinking....

Still reading? - - - Always!

I'm in. I'm excited, and I'm eager to see this thing going.

Any chance of getting a copy of that kit so I can start messing around with it - I'd like to get a jump-start on using the package.

Let's hear from all members who are interested in being involved, so that Jibbler will be encouraged to continue moving forward with this.

If you are serious about helping, please post a reply.

Thanks,

Okay, you want more? Its like this... I have a ripping kit that I've been messing with, and its very easy to use, etc... it will create NFO/SFV/M3U files automatically. The kit is designed to use EAC/Lame but it also include RazorLame (a graphical frontend for Lame), QuickSFV for making/checking SFV files, CDTag for proper tagging (tag and rename is ok, but we want to be consistant and uniform), and some short tutorials.... :01: :01:

Okay, here is where things get interesting... the "scene" standard (the rules used by ripping groups) argue that mp3s are to be 192 Constant Bit Rate. Some audiofiles will argue that VBR (variable bit rate) encoding is better... personally, I have compared 'professional' rips at 192CBR and 128VBR, and IMO, VBR sucks ass.

In order to see the bigger picture, you have to understand one small detail. The 'mp3 scene' has now made a committment in 2004 to make all thier rips VBR. This includes some major groups like FNT, RNS, aPC, and more... however, instead of a low quality 128 VBR rip, they are talking about either 256 or 320 for CD quality VBR. I'm not sure if this will increase rip size, or if there is any true benefit to their new VBR rules...

So, uh, the rip kit is still coming.. gonna take a bit longer.. I have the new 'scene rules' but we are still working out some bugs... stay tuned... ;)

VBR :(

Jibbler
01-01-2004, 09:42 PM
Well, so far, the file sizes are about the same. Approx 3 to 5 mb for a song. If I wasn't clear earlier, this is a different way of encoding VBR than people have been using in the past. It should have advantages over 192CBR files, and should sound much better than your basic VBR (alt-preset-standard)...

Personally, I'm not sure if I like the direction that things are heading in... but... I'm sure there will be no shortage of people downloading the songs.. VBR or CBR, people like free music.

just to clarify, I have ripped a few CDs with the new kit... those are floating around already... however the actual 'kit' is ready to be tested... some tutorials still need to be written/re-written, but mostly, a beta version is ready to go. :)

No 'official' rips should be made with this kit until the final version comes out, but at least you can practice with it. :)

A few changes are being made to the ripkit, including a profile for OCR that will allow you to simply load all OCR settings. These are only small cosmetic changes to the kit, to make life a bit easier for new rippers. Lonesome Skynyrd Time: A Bluegrass Tribute to Lynyrd Skynyrd (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&uid=UIDCASS80401120200462130&sql=Aag4gtq1zzu43)

"You cannot discuss this album without first considering Lynyrd Skynyrd's place in the universe. For most people, the Florida band's music epitomizes Southern rock and, more specifically, redneck music. Like it or not, it is a cornerstone of classic rock, especially south of the Mason-Dixon Line.

But walk into most neighborhood bars in Manhattan that cater to the recently matriculated, and you'll hear Skynyrd on the sound system or on the jukebox, and you'll hear voices singing along, boozily, rediscovering their inner frat boy/sorority girl.

"Gimme Three Steps," "Freebird" and, especially, "Sweet Home Alabama" are iconic good-time songs that transcend geographical situations and speak to the rebel yeller, or perhaps merely the draft-beer drinker in all of us.

Now consider "A Bluegrass Tribute to Lynyrd Skynyrd," a collection of Skynyrd songs performed on bluegrass instruments by Larry Cordle and Lonesome Standard Time (dubbed Lonesome Skynyrd Time here). Just using bluegrass instrumentation, however, doesn't make it bluegrass. Instead, it sounds like a lost recording of the members of Lynyrd Skynyrd themselves — if they could play the mandolin, fiddle, banjo and acoustic guitar very, very well.

The album passes by quite amiably, but is it worth owning? The onus passes to the songs themselves. And here, Lynyrd Skynyrd shows us that it deserves a tribute album.

"Saturday Night Special" is the kind of gun-control attack one would expect from a card-carrying liberal, and "Things Going On" is similarly activist. Did you know that Skynyrd implored its listeners to consider the difficulties of living in a ghetto? "Call Me the Breeze" (actually written by J.J. Cale) and "Tuesday's Gone" are quite pretty, far prettier than you might expect from seven gentlemen who sported back-roads facial hair, cowboy hats and spangled, largely unbuttoned shirts.

This record also includes "The Ballad of Curtis Loew," which wouldn't make anyone's list of best-written rock songs. But its earnestness is difficult to resist and its single-minded praise of an old black bluesman doesn't jibe with the band's semi-racist reputation. A more complicated vision of Lynyrd Skynyrd emerges from all this, and that justifies Larry Cordle's project.

Or, forget the above. "A Bluegrass Tribute to Lynyrd Skynyrd" is also well considered as just a platter of good music, serving primarily as a way for the legion of closet Skynyrd fans to play these old Southern rock songs in a new, tasty fashion. Cordle and Lonesome Standard Time hew very closely to the original structures and licks of the tunes; they simply play them in a more socially accepted, acoustic fashion.

One gets a sense that the musicians enjoyed playing these songs from their past, that this album was a labor of love, and that this recording is truly a tribute. It's a worthy addition to a music fan's collection.".....

The rip kit needs to be updated... I thought about separating CD1 and CD2 into different directories, but since this is a live show, I felt it needed 3 playlists. One m3u for CD1, one m3u for CD2, and a 'super' m3u which will play the entire concert, both disks CD1+CD2 consecutively. :) :music1:

If you are confused about something I said, come see me in distro or send PM me and I'll try to explain. Point is CC, the rip kit is just a guide, sometimes there are situations where you might do something a bit different. That's why there are nfo's with the mp3s, so you can see additional notes like that. Tho, I didn't put any notes in there... so it was still a good catch on your part. :01:

:D And if you are confused about something with Orange come see me in SoulSeek in a few Days or PM me and I'll try to explain.

You can use whatever Notes you have to Store in your Database. :01:

:P Now decide what to do. :P

Yall and this silly rip kit. Damn, how good can it be? I would like to hear one and compare it to my rips. Unless it's in PCM wav format I doubt it could sound any better than 320 bitrate 48Kbs sample rate in MP3 format.

This discussion has moved way beyond sound quality. 320? Too damn big, and tests have proven that lossless compression can be achieved at much smaller bitrate/filesize.

The ripkit was designed to keep things uniform among the rippers, and each rip comes with an nfo that shows ripping notes, details... an .sfv file to verify that there were no corrupt files created during ftp xfer... an m3u file to make playing/burning a full cd easy... we add coverscans, which most major ripping groups DON'T include.. why? cause they are lazy.. and our rips conform to scene standard which is --alt-preset standard VBR using tried, tested, and proven ripper/encoder matching of EAC/Lame. This 'scene standard' was created by audiofiles and computer geeks who thru there own time/testing/contribution, were able to determine a system acceptable for creating music even YOUR ears will satisfy.

The rip kit really shouldn't be discussed on such a 'public' forum. Users looking to properly share high quality rips of thier music are welcome to contribute and possibly rip for us. However, we are an internal group that does this purely for the fun of the scene, so we are not recruiting new members. However, if you can contribute something to the cause............ :music1:

Sounds great tp me Jibbler. I just hadn't seen anyone saying just what yall are putting out. I love ripping and do pretty well at it and that is why I was interested. Maybe sometine in the future. I host a few files myself but sadly only have 300 megs of room but its has very high bandwith limits. I saw someone asking about a good ftp server so I'll be looking for some good answers cause I need some room myself. Take care and thanks for the answer.

No bitching about the length of this - either you're interested and you'll read it, or you're not -in which case S :P T :P F :P U :P ! :P <---- EDIT (STFU Smileys added)

High-definition music has arrived

SACD, DVD-Audio discs growing in popularity

Sept. 20, 2003 - Music lovers and hi-fi enthusiasts are all abuzz about the next generation compact disc. These new super high-quality discs and players have been a high-priced underground hit for nearly three years, but that’s all about to change, thanks to some decades-old albums by the Rolling Stones.

Two competing formats both contain digital music files that are of higher quality and resolution than that on a regular CD.

Super Audio CDs have a Super Audio layer with a two-channel audio mix and a 5.1 channel surround mix. They must be played on a SACD player. Some SACDs, called hybrids, also contain a regular CD layer on the same disc and can be played on ordinary CD players.

DVD-Audio discs contain a super-resolution two-channel audio mix and a 5.1-channel surround mix. DVD-A discs must be played on a DVD-Audio player. Some discs also contain a standard Dolby-digital music mix and can be played on any machine that can handle DVD-Video discs.

Confused? I’ll make it simple for you. I won’t compare which format is better at conveying the most tonal nuances when you listen through a super high-priced, multi-channel system. I will say both sound very, very good in a number of stereo and home theater set-ups I’ve heard (although I’m not sure I’ll ever get used to people singing in the front, on the side and behind me). For me, the big difference is that hybrid SACDs will play in my stereo, my home theater set-up, my car and on my portable CD player. DVD-As will play in any DVD player, but not in any of the millions of CD players in use around the world. That gives the SACD a huge advantage in ingratiating the format with most music listeners.

The music underground has been rumbling about both formats for nearly three years. But the players have been prohibitively expensive compared to mass-market CD players — and most of the software (the actual discs you play) have also cost as much as $8-$10 more than the equivalent music CD. Until now.

Thank the Rolling Stones — and the people who market their music at Abkco. Instead of just re-releasing some 22 early Stones albums, Abkco did an extraordinary amount of work remastering this material and creating what amounts to a milestone in musical reproduction history.

Remastered rock masterpieces
Abkco went back into their vaults, took out all the master tapes and started from scratch. They listened, they compared and they found that some songs were originally released at the incorrect speed. They actually compared different master tapes to find songs that matched an actual music track of a video documentary of one Stones’ recording session. What they ended up with are 327 rock masterpieces — and something that should be on any rock aficionados’ want list for this holiday season. Assuming they can wait that long.

For the record (pun intended), very early albums originally recorded in mono are re-released in mono or “true stereo” where available — not the horrible sounding “electronically reproduced stereo”. The original “Let It Bleed” album was reportedly meant to be one contiguous musical presentation — so the new hybrid disc contains no bands of silence between songs. You can also program your SACD player to put those silences back in.

Each of these discs is a hybrid SACD. That means your player will automatically determine whether to play the CD or SACD layer. These discs sound fantastic when played through my standard car CD player — or any of those little speakers in my computers at work or home. But it is through SACD players that these songs really come to life. The SACD tracks are the first EVER, in any format, to approach the sound of the original vinyl tracks in my extensive LP collection. To be honest, the SACDs actually sound better than my old LPs — no clicks, pops or scratches. These discs convey a sense of reality in the music that has rarely been reproduced by any home digital music format.

I almost left out the most important fact of all. These new remastered discs are reasonably priced. Yes, I understand that these are made from songs recorded between 1963 and 1970 and new albums may cost more to make, but in my local music shop the discs, with a suggested retail price of $18.99, are selling for $12.99 each. In contrast, some other SACDs in my collection averaged $19.99 each and didn’t sound as good. For the record, I’ve only tested a dozen or so of the some 650 SACD titles available. Too much music, not enough time!

Abkco kindly sent me three albums to audition. After one listen I ran out to start buying the rest. I also have to congratulate Abkco on going whole hog with the graphics and artwork on each album. They’ve done a great job with the entire series.

Hardware options
Enough with the revolutionary software, how about the hardware to play them? Since I’ve pretty much decided on SACDs for my listening pleasure I’ve narrowed my options to the new SACD players on the market. A number of manufacturers make SACD decks: Sony and Phillips (the creators of both CDs and SACDs), Marantz, Accuphase, Denon, Kenwood, Aiwa and Sharp.

The first SACD tester machine that entered my home is the one I eventually purchased. The Sony SCD-C555ES is a huge black box with a 5-disc carousel and enough bells and whistles to choke a horse. I never thought I’d use all the features included inside, but recently I’ve been proven wrong. More about that in a minute.

The 555ES, with a suggested retail price of $800 is in the middle of Sony’s SACD/CD player line. You didn’t expect Sony to send me one of their $3,000 or $5,000 models did you? Doesn’t matter. The 555ES is hot stuff! I’ve been using it as my primary playback device for the past 3 months and I can happily report that CDs sound a lot better than on my old highly-modified CD deck — and when the material permits, it’s capable of breath-taking music reproduction of SACDs. (See Rolling Stone discs above). Also as reported above, I’m not a big fan of 5.1-channel music reproduction so all those features built-in to the 555ES don’t really interest me.

The latest SACD player I’ve been listening to is Sony’s DVD-NS755V. As you might guess from its model number, this is a progressive scan DVD player that also plays back SACDs, CDs and DVD-As in the somewhat lower-fi Dolby Digital format.

The 755V is thin and light. There are provisions on the back for you to plug it into your stereo (two or 5.1-channel) as well as your TV, monitor or home-theater system. The 755V automatically determines what kind of disc you want to play and plays it. DVDs look great (on my current low-tech living room setup). DVD-As sound OK. but nowhere near as good as they could sound if you have a dedicated DVD-Audio player. CD reproduction sounds good too; SACD playback (in stereo or multi-channel mode) sounds great. Not as refined as with my 555ES — but then again — the 755V has a street price of only $249.

That means you get SACD, CD and progressive DVD playback for under two-and-a half bills. I’ve even seen the 755V selling for under $225 on the Web. There’s also an older Sony single-disc DVD/SACD model still available (DVP-NS500V) kicking around for under $200 - but I think the 755, with its progressive DVD features, is the better buy. Either way, it’s a great way to get into SACDs without shelling out hundreds or thousands of dollars. I’d even go as far as to say that the 755V would be the cornerstone of a great stereo costing $1,000 or less. More about that in an upcoming report.

Two decades ago, when CDs were in their infancy, it took three years before Sony introduced a portable CD player. It sold for something like $500; CDs took off from there. SACDs are now entering their third year on the market with more than one million players sold to date. Sony’s SACD guru David Kawakami, while not telling me exactly what’s being planned, did hint that SACDs would soon be playing back on portable and even car players in the foreseeable future. It looks like SACDs and high-definition music playback may be in our futures — and that’s a good thing.

I think its just better quality - ive heard it and i can't really tell that much of a dif between it and say - 256kbps MP3, letalone a regular wav. cd.

NEW RELEASE - (or maybe not so new, im not sure)

DJ Dangermouse - The Grey Album

He took Jay-Z's Black Album and mixed it with parts of the Beatles' White Album - creating the .... Grey Album.

It was in stores for only a couple days or something because the dj didn't have the rights to either album. It's a shame because I would have liked to buy it. Anyway, the only way I could find it is online, so I suggest you download it right away. It's an amazing album.
