View Full Version : Nasty National Delicacies....

In Sweden, this christmas, thousands of swedes will start eating a delicacy called:
"surströmming" - Fermented Baltic Herring
Its served from a bulging tin containing rotten fish - quite a delicacy - but stinks to high heaven and is loved by connesseurs (? spelling). Its usually served together with fresh cream and chopped onion mixed, boiled potatoes and of course a nice shot of vodka.

Any more??

Well haggis is pretty horrible (made of sheeps insides and all that)...but i likes it!

Of course, you have to catch the little blighters first :P

Isn't there some ghastly fruit called a durian (I think) which is also supposed to smell like rotting fish. I believe it is something of a delicacy in the far east.

As a Scot I would like to get a pre-emptive strike in and say that haggis is not nasty. :D

The legs on the left hand side of their body are shorter than on the right.

That makes it easier for them to run along the side of hills.

It does, however, make it predictable which direction they will run round the hill.

Evolution gone awry.

Fortunately their only natural predator (other than man) the puddock, is amphibious and rarely found that high on the hills. So they are pretty much OK.

Here in Norway ppl likes to cook the head of sheeps,
im not touching it.

In Finland a traditional food around Eastern is Mämmi (http://en2.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%e4mmi) (Oven-baked Malt Porridge)
which i think is rather discusting.

Everyone knows Scottish cuisine is based on dare. :P

I've heard of those Swedish-Rotten-Fish boxes, they need to open it under
running water yet still the smell in the house is horrible.

World is weird indeed..

I'd say, and this is just IMO, that the french have some of the most disgusting 'delicacies', I mean, they eat snail's (consider what a snail is likely to have slide over in it's lifetime of roaming soil frequented by various animal's and you'll get what I mean lol) and frog's!! http://klboard.ath.cx/style_images/1/icon8.gif

I agree, the French have made some delightful culinary contributions.

The rotting fish is still disturbing me though - don't like the sound of that at all.

Yo Wee Mouse - we haggis eaters need to stick together, anyone for a deep fried Mars bar?

J'Pol

Or deep fried "pizza" in batter.

With loads of salt and vinegar.

That makes it easier for them to run along the side of hills.
This also makes them particularly well suited for circle track racing.

Which explains their amazing success in NASCAR.

i saw a program on the discovery channel on that one i think. it was a while back, but from the looks of it those malaysians must be crazy to eat that, they were talking like it stinks like something dead. like a dead animal. that's pretty disgusting.

some weird delicacies from my native home state.

alligator meat balls
boiled crawfish
cracklins(fried pig skin, with a lil meat attached)
hog head cheese

It actually smells like an open sewer. There are notices everywhere in Asia, banning them, cinemas, shops, hotels etc. They sell them at Rust'y Market here in Cairns, but I haven't smelt one here yet.

http://www.uploadit.org/BillyDean/durian.jpg

There's a little ditty about durian ..

Durian, looks like shit, smells like shit, and tastes like shit, except durian ice cream, which smells like shit and tastes like shit, but looks like an ice cream.
