I'm hoping to get the black one, to match with the computer.

All i really need is the audio/IDE cables

I'm wondering if this guy works for egghead dot com. He wants info but doesn't even give the brand or model number but a link to a commercial site.

It has "enough information" but he still needs info? HMMM, what's your commission? BTW, egghead was meant to be facetious irony. In layman terms (that's you SlingBlade): yes I clicked on the link, genius, and that's why I used egghead instead of ***egg (* see forum rule 3).

reviews seem pretty mixed.

http://www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdwriters.php?DVD...uresandcomments (http://www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdwriters.php?DVDname=nec+1300&Search=Search#featuresandcomments)

some good, some bad, but it's worth paying attention to the similar complaints from multiple users about its compatibility and burning quality. dvd burners are in general pretty finicky about the brands & qualities of blank discs they can use, and some models produce burns that are more compatible with a wide range of players than others. cd burners are one matter (they're all pretty much the same), dvd burners are a completely different matter (they are not all the same).

considering the price of blank dvds and the possibility of buying a bunch of discs that won't work with the burner, i'd stick with the few most popular models- pioneer, sony, or even plextor and liteon. there are good reasons for their popularity.

but if you wanna take a chance on a lesser known brand like NEC, then by all means go ahead.

I'm looking to buy another DVD-Rewriter too. Anyone used the 8 speed BTC or Optorite drives?

I've used the 4 speed Optorite and it was shite. It damaged 7 of my disks and had minor errors on others, so i'm not sure if their 8 speed one is any better.

The only benefit of either of these drives is the price. Maybe i should fork out a bit more cash and buy a better brand. I've used Ricoh before and never had any probs. with it, but they dont make 8 speed of even dual format drives.

Any recommendations from your own experiences?

All of the reviews rate the Sony dual format unit very highly, but I'm afraid that it falls outside of your budget.
I wish they would settle on a preferred format so prices would fall faster...

personally, Id look into the Lite-On 401s, and then take a look at the following pages:

http://forum.rpc1.org/viewtopic.php?t=1837...ht=lite&start=0 (http://forum.rpc1.org/viewtopic.php?t=18375&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=lite&start=0)

and:

but thats all I'll say ;)

I'm not too fussy about the price, i just like to get value for money. I returned my old Ricoh - 2.4 speed back to pcworld and got a refund of 200 pounds ($300) after i used it for 10 months :D .

I want an 8 speed drive that is reliable. has Sony brought out an 8 speed yet?

Another two brands i'm interested in are pioneer and of course, Ricoh. I'm waiting for them to make 8 speed drives availabe.

My preference would be ricoh, because i've used their cd-rewiters and dvd-rewriters and have never even once had a disk damaged. some of the other drives i've used are a bit too sensitive to warm rooms, which is a problem as i'm from the UK and we have to put the central heating on in the winter

I will check the sony, pioneer and ricoh website for any news.

Thanx for your help ;)

I just got a Pioneer DVR 106-D. Today as it happens.

It does all the different formats DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, CDR and CDRW. It's a 4x DVD writer and a 16X CD writer.

I have used it to make CDs of divx files and ripped and copied a DVD movie, to DVD format.

Works a treat, cost me £89 for the OEM version and I can highly recommend it.

That from a serious luddite as you chaps know.

PS the only 8 Speed I know is the Lite on - £125.

I have this one
Plextor PX708A (http://www.plextor.be/english/products/PX708A.html)

8 speed burner, (i have the black one, not really that important :D ) more important it works great. Have not encountered a single problem with this.
Big advantage is that it's the fastest dvd writer atm, also the fasted for burning cd r & rw!
