It seems my Sound card is damaged because i can hear some noises (like 4 ex. the 1 in msn messanger) but i cannot play mp3 files due to a audio error it says.

The wierdiest is that on VideoLAN it seems like nothing changed!!!!
every time i click on SoundMAX from control panel it says "An error was made while the file C:/WINDOWS/SYSTEM/SOUNDMAX.CPL was being worked with

thanx

Hmmm try to remove and reinstall your soundcard drivers.
If that doesnt work, try reseating the card. (remove it and put it back)

yes my guess is to reinstall the sound card, however i have a few questions about it

I do not need to reinstall windows right?
Can i reinstall it without the cd?
will it affect my pc's files?

thanx

Who makes the soundcard (or motherboard if it's an onboard chip)?

Soundmax don't make boards themselves, they just supply the chips, so you need to go to the board manufacturer's site.

when you have a store install parts for you, it's a good idea to find out from them exactly what equipment you own and who the manufacturer is, and info like "is the video card separate, or integrated onto the motherboard? what about the audio card?"

like lynx said, Soundmax is a brand of audio chip, but the drivers come from companies that buy chips from them and attach the chip to a soundcard or motherboard.

If you don't know the manufacturer, you need to look at things like the FCC-ID if there is one. Alternatively look at the writing on the main chip.

With that information you may be able to find a driver on driverguide (http://www.driverguide.com). You have to register, but that's never caused me a problem.
