I can't use my front headphone socket on my comp. because it don't work so it's inconvenient to keep getting on the floor to reach round to the rear one when I want have loud sound via my headphones!
So I'm thinking of getting an external sound card "Audigy 1/2"
are they worth getting?

Will using this external card allow me to have a box on my desk top from which I can plug my head phones in and adjust volume etc. and also plug my surround sound speakers in?

Also I have a 5.1 surround sound on-board motherboard
will the external card still work ok?

Can anyone suggest what else I could buy to plug my headphones/ surround sound speakers into instead of a external sound card?

Thanks

Buy corresponding adaptors/connectors to your built-in sound card, so that you can connect whatever you want. I think this is universal audio connector.

I used a Soundblaster Extigy with my old mobo, and yes, you get a external box with volume, phone, mic and speaker connections with that unit.

The other option, in fact, the one I will be putting in my new rig, is the Audigy Platinum, which has all the same features but mounts the unit in a 5' bay in your pc case.
Either way, Creative Labs is the benchmark by which others measure their sound solutions.

That option is ok but I don't want all the wires from my surround sound system sticking out the front of my tower!
The Audigy 2 allows you to let them hang out the back!

No, the Platinum has a PCI slot card (with a corresponding panel of rear connectors) that puts your speaker connections in the back.
Like so...
