Sorry i dont know were to post this question hope this is the right one.

I want to run xbox live with my PC. My PC is run by a USB blueyonder motorolla modem and a NIC card with RJ45 crossover cable to xbox. This is from the xbox site.

I have Windows XP Home and Zonealarm Pro 4, they will both work with firewal disabled, but PC only and xbox DNS error with firewall enabled.

The xbox site recommended to open these ports:

UDP 88
UDP 3074
TCP 3074

How do i open these ports using Zonealarm Pro 4 and does opening these ports leave my PC vulnerable to attacks.

Cheers

not from my experience

these ports look innocent enough

to open these ports go to firewall, expert, and add

put in a name, go below, source is any, Destination is my computer, protocol, add protocol, udp, enter description, destination port 88, source port any

repeat this step for the other two ports then ur done

Thanks mr Bond

It seems ok, but i lose it when you get to add protocol

Do i have to type in destination port 88

Iam a bit slow could you break down the last bit.

yes once you are in the add protocol window, select the protocol, which is udp, enter a description, in the destination port field manually type in 88, leave the source as any

it's not complicated...

Or you could go into Firewall, Main click on custom choose internet zone, scroll down to allow incoming UDP then type into the text entry space (in this case) 88,307 then click apply.Scroll to allow incoming TCP and type 3074 click apply then OK. ;)

Thanks for the replies i tried both methods still no joy.

But if i turn off zonealarm and turn on XP firewall it works ok.

Not to sure about XP firewall, but at shields up it said i was stealthed or something.

If i keep up with updates is XP f/wall ok.

XP firewall only blocks incoming traffic, so it will not stop any malicious program(s) from "phoning home" <_<

Frankly, make it simple on yourself and shutdown Zonealarm while using Xbox. Let the XP firewall do the job during that time.
It will work fine as long as you don't have any trojans or other malicious software trying to send data out of your PC over the internet. (something the XP firewall doesn't block)

How to know if you got a problem?
Running an anti-virus with current definitions would be prudent. Also, setting Zonealarm to "ask" before allowing any incoming or outgoing data can tip you off to potential problems. A window will pop-up if any programs or program components want to access the internet.
(Go into>Program Control>Components and set everything to "?")

hope that helps a bit..
