I've had this problem for quite some time now.

I've only recently noticed how much it stands out after buying a old laptop.

My PC is no where near new but nor should it be considered old the specs are in my sig if you need to know them.

Now my laptop has half the speed and half the memory but when my laptop is idle (no background progs running) it's cpu usage is about 3%

Where as when my pc is idle with no bg progs running it's around 55%.

Does anyone know what the problem may be?

Thanks,
Darren

most likely a virus, go on the main k-lite site and downooad the 'NOd32 anti-virus' and scan with that, or maybe bad ram or some other kind of malware

That makes no sense to me.

"System Idle Process- 94%" means that only 6% of your CPU cycles are being used. That's not so bad.

I kno but at the bottom of the screen it says (CPU Usage 99%) when shouldn't it be like 7%?

Gee, I don't know AZ.

Do you have anything scheduled to run, like Diskeeper, or anything that runs periodically?
Maybe there is a driver problem and that is eating up cycles....

I'm outta my league here, sorry.

Psp.exe

Do you know what they are?

EDIT: Nvm, alg deals with the win XP firewall.

Alg is
Application Layer Gateway service found only on Windows XP. ALG is an integral part of ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) and ICF (Internet Connection Firewall) in Windows XP. Microsoft’s description : "Provides support for 3rd Party protocol plug-ins for ICS and ICF".

Recommendation :
If you use Windows XP’s Internet Connection Firewall, you must have ALG running. If you use a 3rd Party firewall, set ALG to manual in "Control Panel \ Administrative Tools \ Services".

Thats all i could find on it. Here (http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm) is where I found the info...

PSP.exe is Paint Shop Pro.

This belongs in SoftwareWorld, btw ;)
