View Full Version : I Am Going To Attempt To Build A Computer

I have never built a computer before but I am currently researching on how so that is not a problem. I would just like to know if I can get what I want before I go through the trouble of pricesearching.

What I would really like is at least a 2 Ghz processor, 40 GB hard drive, 512 MB DDR Ram, CD burner/reader, and a good video card for games (9600 Pro maybe?)
It would be nice to have a DVD burner/reader but that is not necessary.

I already have a monitor so that will not be figured in the price. I can spend up to $1000 but would like to keep it under $800. Do you think this can be done?

If not, do you think any of these computers that I have been looking at are worth it?

computer 1 (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=636369&Sku=C426-1004%20P)

computer 2 (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=622348&Sku=H30-1082%20P)

computer 3 (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=668232&Sku=SYX-P4-036063)

Thanks for your time!

under $600 so far...

what about power supply? can you salvage that?

you'd need a case too (unless you want to keep the one you have already), and there's no DVD drive there, but it's still well under budget

p.s. sorry for the crap links, but i've never used that site before :)

Your better off buying a Dell. i was going to build mine. it would have cost almost $1000. i got it from Dell for under $800 W/17' Monitor delivered for free

Of the three prebuilt PCs that you show only the second one will support the AGP 8x of your chosen video card. The other two are only 4x.

Excellant setup, You used newegg like i would have done had you hadnt of done it already, heh.

Oh but yeah, that cooler, is a bit loud, wouldnt be my first pic.

Just look at the design and you will see my point, because it really is as loud as it looks.

it isnt really load, ive got the 'lite' version of it, its silent upto about 2700rpm, then starts to get louder. if you read reviews on tech site, you will find that the lite is better than the 'full' version :)

1. that isnt the lite version he picked out I believe.

2., what processor and temps are you getting with the lite version at only 2700RPMs.

1) i was just telling you all that the lite version is better

2) they are around 44-45c (2000+ palamino oc to 1.8ghz) from what i could remember, ive now got a thermaltake volcano 12 (got it for £5) as it didnt fit on my mates pc

So will the 2600+ for that matter.

_John_Lennon_
12-06-2003, 02:01 AM
So will the 2500 as well, which is why it is so popular.

Oh and btw, I can get my stock cooler to probably do nearly 44-45 if I didnt overclock so damn much, so i dont really seeing paying 30 bucks for maybe only knocking off 8 degrees.

john_malkie2010
12-06-2003, 02:08 AM
i think u mean the 2500+ barton but the current batches of them r locked to a multi of 11 which aint a prob if ur only doing a wee oc to 3200 but if u want any higher multis then u cant get them so thats why i thought the 2800+ would be better cos as far as im aware they aint locked at the moment.....i have the aero7 with a 2800+ at 3200+ and if it is turned down to its lowest setting then at idle my temp is 47C....it is quite noisy at full speed but i dont really have it up full often and when i do its usually only in maybe a game so the sound from the speakers drowns it out unless ur listening for it

john_malkie2010

just found out that all bartons are locked....best to get the 2500+ cos the multi is locked to 11 which means that you just need to up the fsb to 200 which provided you dont get really unlucky then it should work.....that should take the price below $800

Im sure there is a way to get around the lock, there always is.

Even if it does mean using something like SPeed STrip

well i got a 2800+ barton and a 9800pro at stock speed and im scoring 5600points...i know 2 ppl with 9600's, one a pro with a 2600+ thrA and one with a non pro with a 2800+ barton...all at stock speed the scores are about 3300 and 2700 respectivly

so for a p4 3.06 (800fsb) with a 9800 np(which is a more powerfull card than any of those 2 9600's) i would of expected more than 2019 and for what is in your sig i would expect a bit more (bout the 3000 mark)...r u testing it rite?? i.e. with AA & AF turned off

3rd gen remember, hes got a 9600 non-pro (and a 2.4ghz cpu oc to 2.6) and youve got a overclocked 9600pro and a 2700+, i think it does make quite a bit of difference

well, i was talking about when it was non-oc'd
plus his processor should be superior (fsb's and all that...(mine is only 333MHz))

it might just be because 3d mark 03 is so graphics card intensive...i'll run through 3d mark 01 again (or try and fine some times i did it before)

Get the retail one, its usually one 3 bucks more, and its a free Heat SInk and fan that will work fine for moderate overclocking.
