Some large programs that I've downloaded have failed to unzip and/or instal due to bad files. Is there any way to repair them,
or do I have to download the whole program again? ...and hope for the best ...

so dose win zip as a matter of fact zip did a lot better job of it untill just recently we use to zip up our rars after we made them to send them on the net so that we could repair them and have a crc for them
but nither are vary good at reparing them unless its vary minor damage if there are a lot of diff files in it it should get most of them for u but ull prob still have too dl the whole thing too get the ones that are bad if ur win zip dosnt have the option too repair go get the dos file call zipfix.exe
now for a bit of a tutoral on archives so many peps think that rar is such a better archiver then zip and for some things it is true but not all. txt files and bmp's work much better in zip then rar. exe's are about the same in both but rar has a small edge there rar is best with multimedia type stuff but rar dos not have a crc so u cant tell if it a bad file or fix it if it is as well. zips work the best if ur going to transmit ur files as they are more easy repaired then rar over all rar will uasly make a smaller archive then zip and is the best for back up purpouses to save space on ur HD but zip is more robust and transmits a lot better and all so zips are a lot faster to compress and expand then is a rar
hope this helps u to decide wich is the best for what u need it to do it all depends on what u are gona do with it
newer is not allways better :)

RAR files DO have CRCs...

as the first line in the post said
"so dose win zip as a matter of fact zip did a lot better job of it untill just recently we use to zip up our rars after we made them to send them on the net so that we could repair them and have a crc for them"
note the part that say untill just "recently" like in the last few bulds we use to have to send sxf files with it becouse of this omision
but i did use and older file too past from that dose say it still dosnt have it and that is wrong i didnt realy want too get in too it that much for the most part it is still corect exsept that now that rar has finaly come in to the 21th centry and is useing crc's it dosnt have the advantage that it did before on how much it can compress the files the new format makes bigger rar files since the crc was added then they where before and now takes even longer to do archive opps thu they are a bit better for transmision then they where before realy the only thing its got going for it now is it dose multi media stuff a bit better then zip but even that is comeing to an end as the new viedo codecs come out and be come more prevlent as they can compress a video a hell of a lot better then ether of them can and mp3 has prity much taken over from wav format and wav is what rar did best
dont get me wrong rar is still a good archiver but u cant just say its better then zip cus that is not all ways true and zip still beats the heck out of it in the amount of time it takes to do archive opperations
