will it shorten burner life?

I've always played CDs in my cd burners, and every burner I've got still works, even though, right now the majority of them are laying in a pile in the corner of the room.
So I don't think it will shorten their life spans.

Of course not, there's the wear and tear of the CD if you play often.
so its actually the CDs thats being damaged?

Not only CD, but optical lens, motor, gears and belts.
what about CD ROMs and CD players, do they damage your CDs too?
the wear and tear (to the cd or the cd reader/writer) is so unbelievably small, its not worth thinking about. Don't worry about it.

Indeed, don't worry at all about your burner or your CDs.
Worry about the size of your sig.

And verily and forsoothe, also.
Naturally.
Damaging cd's?
I find a hammer or a sharp screwdriver to be much more effective.
I'm told that a microwave has some interesting effects, but in any case make sure you wear safety goggles.

First thing I do when I get up is install my safety glasses.
You just can't be too careful.
I just installed seatbelts in my Barcalounger too.
If I could just get a airbag for my monitor, I'd feel really safe.
