Don't mess around with programs in their Alpha stage.

I wouldn't call using an alpha version of an OS playing it safe... its very risky...

My point is simple.

No verifieds. No Direct links to pirates. We have been asked not to do either, for now.

I can't speak for the other guys. As far as I am concerned, if you want to farg about with your computer it's up to you.

If you can't work out why this would be a bad idea then let you learn the hard way I say.

Good Luck

can anyone tell me if the longhorn alpha is stable.

Benno
02-14-2003, 10:05 PM
I dont think that any alpha release is stable enough for normal use.

btw I wish you a lot of fun with messing up your comp. ;)

Wizzandabe
02-14-2003, 10:16 PM
ok so you say it will mess up my comp. ok thats fine but in what way if ant thing goes wrong i will ether format it or stick my recovery disk back in.

so what will hapen or what do you think could happen?

i was about to recommend only using this alpha on an old pc.
but what windows os runs on a old machine.

anyway it is fun to get your hands on these things in advance and play with them.
im hoping to alpha test a reverse engineered version of the win 98 kernal.

on an old machine of course. ;)

Wizzandabe
02-14-2003, 10:26 PM
yea ok but what so called damage could it do to my comp.

4play
02-14-2003, 10:32 PM
none i bet.
if you are just using it as a test machine. if you have another os as well it could probably screw your hdd partitions and the other os.
which would be a worst case senario.

or it could really infuriate you and you attack your box.

Perhaps you hadn't heard but when MS have software in the Alpha state they put a virus in it. So that if anyone gets their hands on it, without the proper authority / code the virus is activated. Normally what this does is contaminate the boot sector of your hard drive. Long story short the hard drive is goosed. The beauty, from their point of view is that you can't complain. I am not aware of the situation with Longhorn, but I don't want to find out.

This is removed in the first Beta version, simply because it is sent out to users to test. That is why sensible people are only interested in the Beta version.

Like I said, if you want to farg with your computer carry on. A hard drive isn't that expensive nowadays.

Good Luck

Cheers

I shouldnt do any damage that you cant get rid of with formating, but I hate formating and reinstalling windows. ;)

As 4play said if you have an old HD try it on this one.

Longhorn is just XP with more annoying UI, you can download a theme for xp that looks like Longhorn , without all the BS.

That is a total load of bullshit..
Don't let this scare any of ya, there is no virus in the alpha of longhorn, if ya wanna use it feel free to, it's your perrogative and none of us can really stop ya from doing so..

Type Longhorn in the search. Don't know if it's verified. Don't know how many users.

i dont think its from ms. ms was already pissed that longhorn was leaked and they would never make a cd of an os that's still in its alpha stage. yes, lh is very slow. also, go here (http://www.lhfiles.tk/) for sum updates to longhorn. it gives u an activation crack and the fix to ie. there's sum other stuff too but i forgot wut it is.

Just get a comprehensive backup using drive image or norton ghost of your OS on a CDR (or if its too big split it into bits) and then you can fuck with your computer till your dick dries up and just reinstal the Image any time you need it and your old os is back as if nothing ever happened

P.s. it helps if you keep your c: partition small Mine is 3 GB for the os and essential drivers and apps

then you never have to reformat and reinstall the os unless you realy need to install a lot of updated drivers and essential apps, I only need to do this about once and max twice a year.

www.themeworld.com has the longhorn xp theme, i presonally think it sucks balls..

OMG! the themes are for win95/98/me! but if u want the theme for xp, go here (http://www.themexp.org) but the site doesnt work most of the time. search for the Plex Theme, since that's wut the theme is called. but to install the theme, u need StyleXP. go here (http://www.tgtsoft.com/) to get a trial of it.

but the experience of the theme compared to the real longhorn is completely different. but if u want the theme, go ahead.

You can get Longhorn off IRC easily! Go to PacketNews (http://www.packetnews.com) and do a search for Longhorn. Its around 530MB.

any way let me get down to my point if any of you have msn messenger and you have longhorn then please could you send it to me i am oin a fsata cable connection so it wont take long.

if you would be kind enought to trade it through msn mssenger then plese add me.

msn messneger address - [email protected]
Your proposal

To use the Microsoft network to share software, pirated from them.

Is this entirely wise. For both you and more importantly the other person.

This is something MS may take seriously enough to do something about. It is after all their next big money maker. They also wouldn't need to get any info from other people, as it would be on their own system.

I am sure they would be very interested in the person supplying it to you. This thread has taken a sinister turn.

Just wondering. As ever fill your boots.

Yes we know Longhorn looks like Xp with added features, also when will people stop patronising others, "oh dont download it, it will screw your hard drive", So F**kin what? FDSIK the thing if it plants a virus on your drive. Let people make their own decisions on whats best for them. Remember, curiosity killed the cat.
I personally am not even interested in downloading it, i can see what it looks like from the screenshots, and just look at .net server, thats hardly different from XP now is it?

I wasn't being patronising.

My first post was saying that direct links and sigs weren't allowed. The request has been amended.

I then advised against using it, as I would with any action I thought was a bad idea. However I said it was obviously up to the individual. I even posted a link to where a sig could be obtained. Friendly advice, based on reason is not patronising.

You may have your own PC. I have several, other people don't. So friendly advice that carrying out a specific course of action may be a bad idea is not a bad thing. For example what will the rest of their family say when they decide to do this and lose all of their data.

I personally don't want to watch the cats die, but I freely accept their right to do so.

Cheers

JimF

PS what is this FDSIK you speak of. No command I have ever heard of.
