Eclipse Internet (http://www.eclipse.net.uk/), who I am with, regularly recieve awards for the high quality of their ADSL broadband services. The features of the packages are excellent and they are both reliable and secure, while still cheaper than BT or AOhelL.

If you want a really cheap ADSL ISP, Pipex (http://www.eclipse.net.uk/) offer a decent service at a very good price.

You could also consider cable ISPs such as NTL (http://www.ntlhome.co.uk/ntl_internet/index.asp?cust=ntlhome_splashtu24) or Telewest (http://www.telewest.co.uk/home/index.htm).

you make Pipex sound like a second-rate piece of crap isp..

pipex are arguably better than eclipse (what's the binary newsgroup support like on eclipse?)

i'd give up 3kbps for 35000 newsgroups, 99.9% completion and 5 days retention :)

Look into it in detail, you'll find it's actually £20.83 per month for a 1 year contract, or £28 per month for a six month contract. It only drops to £16.66 per month if you commit yourself to a 2 year contract, paid up front. Are you sure THEY are still going to be around in 2 years time?

Plus you have to pay for the modem.

Maybe not such a great deal.

i don't like freeserve because of their bad customer service and poor newsgroup service, but each to their own, i suppose :)

There's no 256k adsl service in UK.

The three cheapest services are:

DataComms Europe Ltd £16.99/month + £25 activation +£45 for modem/filters.
Freedom 2 Surf PLC £19.15/month, free activation, Get your own modem/filters.
PIPEX Internet Limited £19.95/month +14.95 activation (includes modem/filters).

All prices have VAT added.
All subject to 12 month contract otherwise termination fee of about £50+vat.

20 pounds then Nildram is for u, i think its about 21 pounds and it is the number 1 isp in the uk and it has been on this spot for like 6 months now (mine zen is on 3rd now),

and PLZ stop saying all that 256 etc cos u can get 576 or 600k for about the same price

EDIT : my friend uses PIPEX and he is very happy with

PlusNet - there's a £60+VAT connection fee on top, plus you need modem and filters so add about another £50 for those. Works out at about an extra £10 per month making a total of £28 per month for the first year.

Nildram - £19.57/month +VAT +£50+Vat connection, plus you need modem and filters.
Expensive.

yeah we bought the router from them, as it was cheaper to do so than pay the £25 a month to get it for free. the activation was £40 i believe.

dont get tiscalli :o they have a bad reputation in germany as they are capping dl and ul speeds - ppl who had dsl 768dl128ul were capped to something like 56k modem speeds because tiscalli had too many users and not enough bandwidth to handle them all. They also had the cheapest price here so loads of ppl fell for them

For Cable i'd say NTLworld....either the 600k or 1MB service..dont bother with 128k u may as well stay on Dial-Up ;) had the 600k for about 12months now and in that time probably had 2/3 days of downtime (thats f***in' good) its about £24.99 p.m. (600k) and they always have offers on like free modem or installation...jus' check u can get it in your area...i think NTL have come on leaps and bounds with their internet service (dont bother with BT asdl...who wants to use telephone wires still? not me....gimme Cable anyday.. ;)

Telewest are also another good company to try. I'm with NTl though and I'm after a 2MB speed which unfortunately, NTL do not do. I'd go with them if I wasn't tied down to a contract.

As for me iam going through a company called V21 at £19.99 576 K, I was going to go for plus net (somome mentioned them earlier) but their cheaper service at £19.99 said something about no support for P2P.
The chaepest ive ever heard was this comp Biz net who charged £12.99 for 512K!
strange how their site no longer mentions it anymore.

Freeserve:

Free connection
Free modem
30 Day Money Back Guarantee
Excellent Service

The drawbacks:

Not the cheapest ISP (even though you get all your stuff free)
Terrible technical helplines
12 Month Contract

You may wonder what the catch is with ISP's offering services below £20 a month but all these services do is to provide more flexibility of the features, for example technical support may be axed, or you may get a Dynamic IP of less web space. whereas AOL and Freeserve charge premium funds and give no option of anything else.

I say no to freeserve (12 month contract), no to telewest (as i want to stay with BT).
