Ok...what I do with my Cds, is simply put them in the drive, and let Windows Media Player "rip" it. It makes it to where I can listen to the songs in media player and do whatever I want with them. However, my question is if that is considered an MP3? Like could I share those (complete albums) with other users on Soulseek?..if I can get it to work <_<

My personal opinion is that music sounds better when listening to it off of WMP instead of Winamp. Also the new winamp..like winamp 3 actually, took like 20 seconds to open on my computer&#33;&#33; I duno about the new winamp tho, but windows media player is instant.

I will try what you suggested for ripping, and I have Nero 6 although I kinda dont understand all the feautres and shit...

I will try that Orange CD thing even though I have no clue what it is.

My first question was never really answered...can I share the stuff ripped off of WMP (It is variable bitrate and sounds great to me.. :rolleyes: ) Will Soulseek recognize it as MP3? The reason I wonder is because they are my friends CDs ive ripped and he is at military school right now...lol I barley have any CDs

Hey..when I downloaded dbpoweramp...it comes with 2 icons. which do i choose? the one on the top? or the one on the bottom? The one on top seems easiest to use...but i duno. I just wana make sure im doing it right lol

It can, but I think you need a codec from the dbpower amp site.
Also I think most people would prefer if they were ripped straight from cd to mp3.

mp3 is kinda getting old now. so there are newer products out that compress much better.

in wma audio&#39;s case it normally also includes drm stuff so try to avoid that if your gonna share them.

have you seen the advancements divx have made in the past few years. well mp3 has not changed alot in a while as far as i can tell.

other formats are always changing there codecs. ogg, wma and others.

WMA files could also have malicious scripts innit.
Avoid WMA&#39;s at all costs.
mp3&#39;s are the most common format, for audio.
There&#39;s other formats too, but you&#39;ll
likely to need a codec or a program to run them.

Part of the success behind mp3 format is it has not changed much,

the perceived sound quality will depend on your soundcard and speakers (among other things)

it&#39;s generally felt that mp3&#39;s are better as a compression codec than wma though :)

yes, there are alot of newer, better compression methods (FLAC, MPC, OGG, etc.) that everyone could be encoding with, rather than
dumb ol mp3....it&#39;s simply a matter of standardization. It&#39;s easier to distribute to a larger number of people when you can assume
that everyone knows how to open and use a particular file type. Go try to get a WMA player for your car.
Any other format could be inserted here.

But yeah. I agree. mp3 is rather old....and there should be some changes made to it, or everyone should start adopting another format.
But nobody seems to have an idea what it should be, everyone has their favorite (I like ogg).

If you wanna use your files on your computer, you can use whatever the hell kinda format you chose.... but if you&#39;re gonna be at SoulSeek and share albums with others; you better have &#39;em in mp3-format or people most likely won&#39;t be interested in sharing with you...

sorry, the last statement is bollocks. although a 64kbps WMA probably sounds better than a 64kbps MP3, there is no way that it sounds better than a 192kbps MP3. Unless of course, you love the sound of a stereo when you bubble-wrap the speakers and tune in to the radio.

the general consensus is that mp3 = good. wma = bad. there are other,more efficient audio codecs developed now, but it&#39;ll take a long time before they surpass the popularity of mp3.

Did you listen to the exact same album? In MP3 192 and WMA 64?

Or were you listening to a 2003 rip through 64 k WMA and a 1973 rip through 192 k MP3? Because in that case you could be right.

Some old cd&#39;s do sound bad [the original] and you cant make em sound better. [unless they are remastered but even then]

So try listening to the exact same album in both formats when you want to compare. Use good speakers as well, most pc speakers are crap.

If you still say 64 k WMA sounds better then 192 k MP3 i give up on you :P

Ok seriously..I just added the Trapt CD that i downloaded...I also have the song Headstrong...separate from the CD I downloaded..the one I downloaded seperatly sounds SOO much better then the one with the cd..there both 192

The one that sounds SO much better was encoded by Xing. The other ones were by Lame 3.91. Lame stuff doesnt sound great to me..whats going on? sorry i just dont know anything about ripping lol. Well i know how to do it.
