View Full Version : I've Got A New Mouse

I left the outside door open for a few minutes and it must have got in.

When I came back in, I probably scared it and it ran up the stairs. Next thing, I came up the stairs and sat down at the computer. After a few minutes I heard a scuffling next to the waste paper bin a couple of feet away. Scared me half to death.

Then I saw it, a little field mouse. And it saw me. Damn, those things can jump.

I quickly shut the door so it can't get out of the room.

So there we are, it's in here with me. I've got a trap somewhere but I'm not very confident about them. Last time one got in it was here for weeks before it suddenly disappeared.

Anyone got any ideas on how to get rid of it?

Get a humane trap (a cardboard box with cheese in will often do the trick; just prop it up with a book or something and tie string to it, so you can yank it away and trap the mouse).

Then drive out to the country somewhere and set it free.

Mice actually prefer bread to cheese, it's an old wives tale about them loving cheese.

And you can get properly made humane traps, the plastic tilt trap is effective :)

Plus you don't have to deal with a mouses gut's hanging out cos thats just gross

Went to make coffee.

Heard the snap as the kettle turned itself off.
Strange, kettle not boiled yet.

Shitbag.

Why kill it? Really - why end a life? For convenience? Was that mouse's right to live less important than your desire to get it out of your house as conveniently as possible?

A squatter breaks into your house; do you hit him across the back of the head with a hammer? No, of course not - that would be murder and totally unjustified. Why doesn't a mouse get the same treatment? Because it's an animal and doesn't deserve to live as much as we do?

lynx

I was being kind really.
If I'd put it back outside it would have frozen to death with the current temps.

And if I'd let it stay inside, well let's just say that the spider has grown. :fear:

Oh come on Lamsey, do you remember being taught about the Beaubonic Plague?
They carry fleas, disease and all manner of horrid things that can harm us.

Yes it's sad, I don't like anything being hurt or killed but it happens, deal with it!

Just one question and I think I know the answer........Lamsey, are you like a total vegetarian?........No meat at all?.........Fish?.......Shellfish, Chicken??..........Nothing?

Nothing against it just asking :)

No!...........all meeces must die

Ok listen before you all start jumping on me I'm just pointing out the facts of life, I used to be a fisherman (bass, cod, crabs, lobsters, mackrel) I never killed one of them, could'nt do it, always had to let someone else do it.
I once watched a friend catch a Roach from a freshwater pond and cast it still on his hook across a dusty field.........needless to say I wacked him with my Fishing rod.

Sheesh, I feel guilty if I stand on a snail, ask Nikki about the spider........I can't hurt creatures...........humans yes, creatures no.

But they get killed, people set traps, people swat, people stamp, drown, wack, beat and worse.........this is a fact of life!

Sorry I was just trying to make that point :)

And no, I ain't on me high horse or think anyone's having a pop, just making a personal view point :)

With fields just over the garden wall mice are a recurrent problem.

I've tried the other methods in the past, they don't work. If the mouse is there long enough to have got used to it's surroundings, it knows when something new has been added, and avoids it.

The only way to deal with them is either poison (which I am not in favour of, leads to a very slow painful death), or a trap which can be set up very quickly. Since I don't have one of the so called "humane" traps, I had to opt for the quick killer type.

But as I said before, to put a mouse outside in the current weather conditions would mean certain death anyway - why do you think it sought shelter in my house?
Unless you knew where it's nest was it would not have time to build a new one and would freeze to death.

JONNO_CELEBS
12-09-2003, 06:38 PM
Exactly :)
Well said Lynx, we have a problem with rats cos I live near a stream and people say it's nasty to kill them, but it's ok for a little old lady to reach into her water butt with a can and get bitten making her extremly ill (true story of 2 years ago here)

@Body.........if he is trying to hijack it he did'nt do very well.............can I have a go? :D

Actually, I live on the outskirts of a (large) village, although the nearest towns/city are only 2, 4, 6 and 7 miles away.

Best of both worlds, I suppose.

Actually I can - No, I wouldn't hit them with a hammer. Crack them over the head with a baseball bat, if I had to. Pay the coppers to break down the door and beat the s*** out of them, maybe if the squatters are annoying enough to justify a truce. Burn the place down, maybe if it ain't mine place. But never would I hit someone with a hammer.

It's a pretty nice hammer

I didn't like killing the mouse but I didn't have a hammer or a baseball bat to threaten it with. The last one I had was just like a squatter (or a student), nibbling at everything I left out.

With Christmas coming up that just wasn't an option, so it had to go. Thinking about it, it acted exactly like a squatter, the moment my back was turned it was in there.

I think I was pretty lenient really, if I had realised it could have been a student mouse, I would have thought about a really painful death.

Sorry if I've offended you, Weemouse, but if your friends can't control themselves then that's just too bad. (btw, they don't like cheeez.)
