How To Port-Forward With a Linksys Router (WinXP Vers 1.2)

1.) Find your "Gateway" Ip. This can be done many ways, in this guide I was describe one.

2.) Start > Run > Type "CMD" (without qoutes) and hit enter > Command prompt will come up (black screen)>Type "ipconfig" (without qoutes) and hit enter.

http://www.chinkii.com/uploads/album/ladies/gateway.JPG

3.) Now open up Internet Explorer (IE for short) and in the address bar
type your gateway IP.

http://www.chinkii.com/uploads/album/ladies/adress%20bar.JPG

4.) Hit enter and you should get a password prompt.

http://www.chinkii.com/uploads/album/ladies/router1.JPG

5.) Now depending on who has messed with your router before there is a
default password. Many including the most common "admin" or "admn" if
you try either and no luck, then reset your router. There is a small button
on the back that says "RESET", press and hold for 45 seconds.

6.) Now you should be at the "Setup" page, Depending on the
firmware version your page my look different from mine.

http://www.chinkii.com/uploads/album/ladies/setup.JPG

7.) Now choose "Advanced" tab, this will bring us to more advanced features of the router.

http://www.chinkii.com/uploads/album/ladies/advanced.JPG

8.) Now in the "Forwarding" tab, see the picture below on port numbers ect.

http://www.chinkii.com/uploads/album/ladies/ports.JPG

9.) Now depending on your LAN IP (see first figure to determan your LAN IP.) Just use the picture to help you figure out the ports.

10.) Hit "Apply" at the bottom and your done!

11.) Now enjoy faster speeds!!!

Authors Note: I hope this guide helped you, if so a small thank you e-mail would be greatly accepted :)

No need to forward ports for a modem. :)

Are you sure you followed the instructions to the letter. Unfortunately, when I bought my Linksys Router, there wasn't any helpful guides like this so I had to learn the hard way.

Once you have typed in your 'Gateway Address' and input your password, default is 'admin' and user name is to be left blank.

Click on the 'Advanced' tab on the top right corner, then click on 'Forwarding' which appears as a new tab.

Now here is where mistakes can be made... Don't just put your TCP and UDP Port numbers in the spaces provided and think that it's done. There is also a button called 'Port Triggering' funnily enough. Input the same data. Save.

Now, I recommend rebooting the machine and going back to your Linksys Diagnostic page, and seeing if it has been saved correctly. Try now. It should be working.

This is a simple test to look if you're behind a router, NAT, firewall or if you've configured them correctly.
Go to the following link:
http://btfaq.com/natcheck.pl

Instructions on how to use it are on the page.

Thanks a bunch!

Also, for the belkin, I don't think you can set a range, you have to put each port in manually, but it's working great.

May I add, that if you use the newest Azureus (2.0.7.0) you will only need to forward port 6881

Press the reset button to put it back to factory settings, then the defaults will work.

You will have to reconfigure it afterwards though.

Edit leave the username blank and try admin as password.

linksys is the brand of router, each router manufacturer uses their own brand of firmware (software installed in the router) so your router will display a different looking page.

Quick question, do you think that port forwarding would work for a uni firewall and do you think they would be able to find out or that they would care.

I don't want to fuck with it if they won't like it and they can find out.

I would be grateful for any help as at the moment on this comp i can only use klite which is not so good.

TCP is more common for file sharing programs & put in your real network ip address.

Right call me dumb but i just dont get this can someone explain to me a bit better. Its line 3 and actually finding the ports on my system that is getting to me i'm pretty new to this and i just cant figure it out help anyone.

 :(

ilw

do you mean point 3? If so your gateway ip address is the network ip address of your router. ie the ip to log into your router. (probably 192.168.x.1 where x is either 0, 1 or 2). if you don't know your routers ip address open up command prompt (point 2 in the quoted list) and type in "ipconfig" without the quote marks. That should then tell you your gateway ip.

Finding the ports to forward is done by either checking the program's options (the program you are trying to forward ports for) or by looking on the internet to find out which ports a program uses. Normally you can choose which ports a program uses in options/preferences/settings.

If your stuck it may be better to make a new topic in the main bittorrent section because this topic doesn't get checked anywhere near as much

make sure your on the same subnet as your router. do the ipconfig /all and make sure your octets match the gateway/dns server of your router. If the router address is 172.16.0.1 and your on anything else other than 172.16.1.x then you won't be able to connect to your router unless you spoof it.

btw, this guide is not that helpful. Well it is a little bit but not everyone has a shitty lynksys or a similar admin control panel.

The easiest less tedious way would just be to forward "all" ports to your box, get a personal firewall and make that machine dmz. :)

Authors Note: I hope this guide helped you, if so a small thank you e-mail would be greatly accepted :)
i cant see the pics that show how to set it up, mind uploading them again please i need this to work?

Well I'm not really new at bittorent but i just didn't mind the speed lol its from 5kbs-8kbs sometimes it goes down to 0.8 kbs. I have a network everywhere router im not sure if i have a firewall? maybe the window xp one , and norton anti-virus i forward my ports but the light never turns green im using azureus.
When i forward my port there was something like
Customize program: I wrote Torrent
Ext. Port: 6881
There was a box to check the Tcp i check it
Int.Port: 6889
then wrote my ip addres
and checked enable
If any wondering what it looks like write
http://192.168.1.1/ blank for username admin pass
thats all i did to try and make my torrent download go faster is there anythign im doign wrong ?
Thanks in advance

you mean your lan ip?

go to run and type cmd
then in the dos windows that pops up type ipconfig this will show your ip

However you have to mame sure your router gives you the same local ip everytime you connect to it.

lets see again then. Im new to filesharing Talk. I have a Linksys NR041. Im trying to use my HFS server. Attempting step 3. Im not getting the username: password thing to pop up. So... Will that happen even if i dont have a router hooked up to the computer right now ?
