Is it possible to get corrupted files when downloading with mirc?

i downloaded a few albums and when I check them with the svf file I get a CRC missmatch on two songs. Does this mean that the bot is serving a corrupt file or did it get corrupted during download? I mean would it help if I redownload the same album?

thanks Benno

http://domania.us/LWN2003/KazaaLite/XP_LOGO2.PNG Also keep in mind that if you do get a corrupt file, make sure you delete it from your download folder before you resume your download again or you will lose portions of that file if it is in rar format. If you are downloading a file from a certain bot and that bot decides to go offline and you only got half of that file, and u see another bot offering that same identical file...please again delete the prior file from your download folder or it will continue on that same file which corrupts it then. You also get files that are corrupt by packet loss. This can happen mostly with ppl on 56k or dsl and has known to affect cable users also. Just a little help. :D

So if I have a partial file and want to resume it from a different bot than the originla one, it will get corrupted? even if it is the exact same file?

Benno, I am seeing almost all .rar's and .tar's getting corrupted lately. Regardless of whether I resume the file from the same source/different source or in one complete download session.

Not sure why, but I just got one movie that is completely missing one of the .rar's :blink:

Seems like you are better off trying to get something that has not been compressed.

I downloaded spellforce and one file is corrupted, is there way to get just this one file so that i dont have to download everything again?

I've noticed in some channels they offer specific pieces for dl. But so far I haven't been able to locate one I need. I have a few files waiting around hoping for a missing piece.

Sometimes you will find pieces available when searching through ircspy.

Hopefully someone else has a better way of finding them.

if its new, try news gourps, and ask for a specific file
or look around you could find a par file for it and you would be in business

i downloaded anime off of irc and when i watched them they seemed to play fine. But when i help to seed them with BT it says that the file is 99% or something but the file sizes are exactly the same. I guess this means that irc transfers arn't perfect but most of the time a person never knows the difference. At least this is my guess.

By the way, if it makes you feel any better, corruption wasn't my big issue last night and today. Whatever u do, please make sure you run a antivirus program and a firewall when u download anything from irc. Also when you get a file, make sure you scan it for viruses before u open it. Irc is very well known for getting trojans through your open ports and norton antivirus can miss some or your firewall. I should know cause i picked one up last night and this trojan fucked all my stuff up including my nero software and my xp burning utility. Even froze my pc up..so in short I could not copy nothing I had saved to disk and lost everything, including all my newest movie releases. Got to start from scatch again. :angry: BUMMER!

Read the pinned article on "advanced irc leeching". It tells how to avoid corruption with rollback.

Hey bawa I downloaded spellforce and i didnt download the whole file from the same bot. In the end one rar file was corrupt, i had to download only 15MB again. So downlaoding from different bots cant be that bad ;)

btw I got the one file i need from the channel i mentioned above :)

bawa@Klite_user, if you still know the bot you were getting the file from the first time, and you know how big the file was, then you can use the "btrunc" command to shrink the file back to where it was rather than start over. Type "/help /btrunc" in any mirc window and it will show you how to use it.

Rollback guys!

Paste the following into your script editor:

On *:GETFAIL:*: {
btrunc $filename $iif($calc($file($filename).size - 1024000 ) > 0, $ifmatch, 0)
}
Tools >> Script Editor >> File >> New >> Paste script >> Save As: Rollback.mrc >> Save and Exit.

In your status screen type:

/load -rs rollback.mrc

or if you saved the file in any other place, specify the target before the filename.

The size of the rollback can be changed as well just add the proper amount of zeros, I have it set for 1meg, but the more the better. Rollback redownloads the specific amount of it's told to, this protects those sudden disconnects and bot drops by redownloading the information at the end that could have been corrupted by the disconnect. (This doesn't help the corruption of trying to download the same file from a different bot, you'll need to delete the existing portion to avoid that corruption.)

@JJ I downlaoded the lates winrar though it didnt help anything. But thats not much of a problem as they files arent big so no problem redownlading :)

@Damnatory thanks I just put it in
though I have one question, on another website i read that I should put

/ctcps on
/raw on
/events on

in connect -> options -> perform
can you tell me what that means and if it is good or bad?

thanks

I set up the rollback when I installed. Just followed the newbie guide for the whole thing. Still have a lot of corruption issues.

Just had one movie where I tried to unrar it with each of my programs. All files corrupt. First time for that, it is usually just 1 or 2.

Yeah go ahead, I just didn't post that part as it's not exactly necessary. The script will work on it's own.

Actually, It wont. at least without the /events :ph34r:

if mIRC doen'st listen to events, the *getfail* in the script won't be monitored

also, check the second page in the guide in my sig, it seems the script should be adjusted to prevent some long filename problems.. ill update it soon

Here's the part venom_il just mentioned. If the path to your mIRC download directory contains spaces, then you need to change the rollback script to this:

On *:GETFAIL:*: {
btrunc $+(",$filename,") $iif($calc($file($filename).size - 102400 ) > 0, $ifmatch, 0)
}
