Win98 :O

I wish, I was looking for a copy of Windows 98 all day on Sunday so I could play some really old games. The only copy I found doesn't play nice with VMWare.

Ha, managed to ResHack the File Progress window (+ some more) by following a guide over @JoeJoe's by a fella named Gupta. It's cool how you can add some minor Vista features into XP no problem. Also, added Google Desktop which is really nifty as well.

That´s really nice work. I´d love to do the same, have the Vista looks but with XP stability. Any chance on a few details about how you have it looking this way?

Hairbautt

I have a half-ass guide in the Software Section (Check here (http://filesharingtalk.com/vb3/software/t-winxp-to-vista-137620)), but compared to what is at JoeJoe's Forum (http://www.joejoe.org/) - it's nothing. Plus, it is serverly outdated now.

In my Desktop pics, I was shooting for a Vista Codename Longhorn style (Pre-Vista), because Vista Skins often have fake buttons such as the Search bar in the start menu...I wanted NONE of that fake stuff, and Longhorn is more unique anyways.

I'm all for functionality as well. ++Top Priority++ Never use customization patches/progs, best to do your system manually.

There's a moderator/admin named Vishal (http://www.joejoe.org/forum/index.php?showuser=3569) who is known as the "ResHacker Guru" - There you can find to do the stuff that I did.

You'll need a program called "ResHacker 3.4.0.79" aka Resource Hacker.

WindowsBlinds or WinXP Visual Styles.

OK, I´ve already got w/blinds and I´ve rarely used ResHacker but I do have it.
Thanks for the info, I´ll see what I can learn.

I wish, I was looking for a copy of Windows 98 all day on Sunday so I could play some really old games. The only copy I found doesn't play nice with VMWare.

I have a copy (a legit one, even), but I can't be bothered to install it on my main. As I recall, I had to take out some RAM just to get it to boot the last time installed it, just so I could fix the registry or something.

1 gig and above gets read as too little RAM, I think.

Luna Element 5.0.5 by ~tornado5 (http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/29511577)

In that screenshot, I'm using Luna Element 5.0.5 - Black Compact.

I wouldn't say the theme was 'Vista inspired' though. The minimize, maximize and close window buttons are the only parts that have the Vista look as far as I can tell. The rest is quite XP-ish.

Oh and also, tornado5 has updated his LE theme to the glossier version 5.1 (http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/47567543). Be warned, at the moment 5.1's fairly buggy, and only comes in blue for now. Definitely something to keep an eye on for future reference.

I see you're a big fan of transparency too... Looks clean and neat which is always easy on the eyes. Im not a big fan of taskbars being on the top though. I can never get used to it for some reason.

Once I started Litestep, I never looked back. Its totally configurable where you can either create your own theme or just modify existing ones like i did if youre not artistically inclined. The list of modules you can add to the desktop is unmatched compared to other windows cosmetic progs. Theres a learning curve but it shouldnt be too hard for anyone who has a brain

Noice desktop, Bo! I'll agree with who ever said it... I can't get used to the taskbar
on top of the screen.

I like the transparency of Vista, very much, lyke. However, I always been
simple and old school about computer resources. I use the smallest most
economical programs, usually. (SoulSeek, being one the exceptions, btw.)

I'll post pics of me corny desktop - for everyone to laugh at. Talk about old
school. :vanilla:

Longtime ago I was usin' CrystalXP's Vista Inspirat pack 'cause I was tired of the Baby Blue XP B.S. It uses a ultrathin taskbar and one day I decided to just put it up top.

Can't stand to have it on the bottom anymore. I once moved it back down and was near death.

So naturally, I moved it back up top.

And that's my story.

Proper Bo
08-02-2007, 01:54 AM
I explained to The ages ago that having the taskbar at the top makes cents. Less mouse mileage, like, cause all the controls (ie file, edit, view etc) for programs are at the top.

Proper Bo
08-02-2007, 01:56 AM
Not that that's the reason I have mine at the top, I just like to make it awkward for anyone who tries to use my pc.

lol I just realised what I said

what I meant was on most of the computers that I've owned I had it down the bottom there. When I decided to take it away I missed it so I put it back to make me feel at home.

As for the wallpaper I go though fazes. Generally I like a minimalist theme as well, but decided to go with something different about two weeks ago. I kind of like it but it can be a hassle when I'm working on something and I have lots of files on my desktop.

I like your theme. Is it a default vista theme or are you using something like WinCustomize?

Skiz
09-08-2007, 11:26 PM
It's an XP theme and it's 100% original. I did a collaboration with a fellow who knows how to make them.

Long story short, I created what I wanted in Photoshop and he coded it. It was only available for download for a couple of days and Microsoft requested it be removed. Was quite a bummer. Anyhow, that was a couple of years ago when Vista's aesthetics were still a secret, so I'm sure they would have no qualms about having this released now, but I like it to be unique.

I do however give it to anyone who wants it. :)

To answer the other question, no. It doesn't require any additional software to run. The VS contains a Black version as well and each color scheme has a compact Start Menu option.

Here's mine ... I rarely see it ... I usually have win explorer open ... I use that to access 80% of my programs ... no shortcuts here ...

http://pics.cheggit.nl/pics/2007/09/30/66-desktop.jpg

also to help clean up your desktop try renaming your shortcuts with
"alt+255" this will leave a blank space thus just leaving your icon there ...
to do this with all of them simply copy the first name and paste it twice in the second name ... 3 times ... 4 times ... so on ... this will get rid of all ur words on ur desktop leaving just icons ...

Nice Ubuntu desktop, DefianceX.

I'm using Linux Mint (http://linuxmint.com) (Ubuntu-based), which is a lightweight and "out-of-the-box" version of the latest stable Ubuntu Feisty... I have Beryl 3D desktop + AWN (http://awn.wetpaint.com/page/Demo) (the dock in the bottom), and they both run flawlessly in my old Pentium M 512MB RAM Intel GM laptop...

Of course. You can set it up as dual boot the way I have it in my system.

@fstrulz Never heard of the mint edition till now. It does look elegant like the website says.

I didnt enable 3d + transparency in my beryl as well as the window thumbnails. Didn't find it too practical. Useful tho when showing it off to friends. I might try out Compiz fusion soon but i heard its pre-installed when Gutsy is released a few days from now

I'd advice that you get Linux Mint. As I mentioned before, it is the best "out-of-the-box" distro - You just download it, burn it, then install it in few simple steps... It'll also automatically give you an option to make a dual-boot, so you can have more than 1 OS in your computer... It also comes with the best and most essential apps available out there for Linux: OpenOffice.org (MS Office alternative), Gimp (Photoshop alternative), Pidgin (Yahoo + AIM + MSN + IRC + ICQ all-in-one messenger/client), Beryl (3D environment), Gnome (simple and light windows desktop evironment), etc... It is also based on Ubuntu. So if anytime you have any questions, you can go to ubuntuforums.org (http://filesharingtalk.com/vb3/ubuntuforums.org) and interact with millions of other Ubuntu users in the forums.

@DX Yeah, I'm not a KDE fan also... It does look more girly (than Gnome) and I don't like seeing the letter K all over the place. :D
