Try removing all the drivers for the modem then installing them again.

I'm pretty sure it's the drivers. I had this problem too. All I needed to do was update them.

i did. It won't install and I've been trying to find updated drivers all day but can find a single working one for a Rockwell HCF 56k Data Fax PCI Modem. I dont' want to have to end up buying a new modem and i then i dont' want to go back to Windows 98 : (

when you purchased your PC you should have also got a driver disc for your modem i had the same problem as you a few months ago all i did was installed the drivers again from the original disk if you havent got the disc try contacting the manufacturer you may find that your printer doesnt work

well thats what i did there is most probably an easier way but........

maybe i am installing it wrong. I pretty much try to instal through the device manager. Is that wrong? and i've tried that one and there are also a lot of people saying it doesn't work but maybe they dont' know the right way either to install a driver

I just did this for a friend a few weeks ago and still have the site.
Roxwell Modem drivers for Xp.
HERE (http://www.modem-drivers.com/companies/902.htm?acd=3&rvd=5&thx=9&bng=7&o=5)

Edit: yes try the device manager to install the driver. Make sure that if it is a .zip file that you create a new folder to extract it in and then when prompted, browse to that folder.
If that doesn't work, just remove it from device manager and try restarting and windows should find the new device.
It is showing up in device manager with a yellow exclamation point, correct?

Yes, I had to try 2 or 3 different ones until I found the correct one.
Make sure that you unzip the file in a seperate folder first.

I think it was this one.....
HCF 56K Data Fax PCI Modem driver Rockwell_XP.zip [more] Windows XP Aug 25, 2002

I have it on disk still, but it would take days to find it.

Edit: I found the disk, there are 3 drivers on it, I know one of them works.

Driver 1 (http://skelley521.isa-geek.org/Rockwell%20HCF%2056K%20Data%20Fax%20PCI%20%20Modem_Riptide.zip)

Driver 2 (http://skelley521.isa-geek.org/DRIVERS%20rockwell%201999.zip)

The 3rd is for a v90, let me know how it goes.

Just let me know, I have another driver somewhere else. I will look for it just incase. No hurrys though, take your time.
Remember to unzip it in its own folder and when prompted for a drive, just browse to that folder. The v90_1 should do the trick, I think the other one is v90_2, so if it doesnt work the other one should.

there are a few modems that xp has issues with ie no dial tone/exclamation marks etc and i have found that windows 2000 drivers have sorted the problem on some of them, if the drivers that skelley521 still dont sort it download the 2000 drivers and try them, you have nothing to lose ;)
