Downloading copyrighted music from peer-to-peer networks is legal in Canada, although uploading files is not, Canadian copyright regulators said yesterday.

In the same decision, the Copyright Board of Canada imposed a government fee of as much as $25 on iPod-like MP3 players, putting the devices in the same category as audio tapes and blank compact discs. The money collected from levies goes into a fund to pay musicians and songwriters for revenue lost from personal copying. Manufacturers are responsible for paying the fees and often pass the cost on to consumers.

The peer-to-peer component of the decision was prompted by questions from consumer and entertainment groups about ambiguous elements of Canadian law. Previously, most analysts had said uploading was illegal but that downloading for personal use might be allowed.

I wouldn't mind paying an extra $25 for an MP3 player. But their levvy of 25¢ per CDR is too much.

Damn 25¢ for a cd that holds 15 songs+ in audio format and 150 songs in
mp3 is too much..? as aposed to ... fines? buying cd's at riaa prices?

WOW.... I don't have to say a damn thing. Canada insults itself.
The people don't care who says what is legal or not. There's a way around anything.

You've got to be kidding me...

So everyone will use this software, and everyones shared folder will be empty, and no one will share anything, and you won't be able to download anything. In the end, everyone loses. :frusty:

In canada we can still upload music, they are not charging people who share music, instead they are making commercials and other advertisements to try and convince us that sharing is wrong. Maybe in another year or 2 they will start sueing people.

if youve made it this ong downloading files illegally, whats wrong with uploading em? i mean canada must not be that superior to the ultimate ways of the US's ways of fighting crime, i.e. beating people with sticks

the canadian equivlent of the riaa scum suckers are wanting to do just that...
sue everyone as per the riaa - Canadians already pay levies on media
(cd-roms, tape cassettes, mp3 players) so in that way the artists are being
compensated. It's the distrubution of songs on the i-net that they want to
curb.

and i am not dumb. :P
