Merry Christmas Duffman, that's a nice HDD that Santa is giving you.
When you partition it, Partition Magic will automatically assign a drive letter for you.
The whole process is actually very easy, the program will show you what your HDD will look like before you have it execute. You can create as many partitions at one time as you like. Mine was done in one shot...

You may want to practice on your old drive first if you have any doubts...

XP also has a built in formatting and partioning tool. As for how does it affect thing I kinda think of it like the drawers in a cabinet where the disk is the cabinet and the partions are like drawers within it.They fill the same space as the cabinet but are split up in order to organise things a little easier, the computer sees them as seperate drives and as clocker said the next available drive letter will be assigned to each partionion. Does this help? :)

I hate to see people trying to make do with such crap. Clocker, check your inbox. A little gift from the server world.

Anyone else wants the best partitoning tool, PM me.

Wow!
Christmas comes early to ClockerWorld.
Thanks, Balamm.
A question.
If the end result is the same ( and I'm assuming that one partition is much like any other- shoot me if I'm wrong...) what makes your app better than the other "crap"?

@DWk, those removable disks are my 6in1 smart media reader.

The supported file types and thoroughness is what makes it better. If you've ever tried to partition an HP with windows ME on it, then you will appreciate this. If you've ever tried to install OS2/warp 4, then you'll appreciate this. I could go on but just give it a look.

There aren't many apps that will run once they discover my OS is win2k advanced server. They make their excuses and close. This one does it all.

Ah,
So it's big advantage is the universiality of it's OS coverage then, eh?

Was I correct in assuming that the end result ( if you can get there!) is the same though?

Actually, no. There are 2 different formats for ntfs and slight differences in some others. Ext3 for example. Your operating system may or may not recognize the formatting done by another app or it may accept the errors without reporting them.

If you partition with windows 2000 and try to install XP on that partition, XP will most likely want to redo it. They use different block sizes. In most cases it won't matter but we do like perfection don't we! :D

In regular partiton magic, you'd need a whole toolbox full of all the different builds right back to PM 3 in order to suit all OS's.
HP winME for example, won't allow partitoning the drive with PM 7 or 8. It will work with 6 though. What the difference there is, I don't know. I didn't have time to investigate, only find a tool that would do the job. Every time!

As long as we're drifting further afield...
What are you're preferences as far as block size goes?
Intuitively it would seem that the smaller the better... more efficient usage without having a lot of partially filled blocks laying about.
Is this true?

Thank Balamm.
I understand how this may be a more efficient tool for him, as he apparently deals with every OS known to man, but I've already run into a prob just reading the .inf file.
You have to transfer this to a floppy and run it from there.

I don't HAVE a floppy installed ATM.

 so how the hell are you partitioning? from windows? tell me it aint so clocker...

I can't recall which OS uses the smaller block size but I do notice a lot higher fragmentation of the master file table in XP. 3% seems to be pretty normal.

I don't see that in win2k at all, just a few logfiles that won't clean up.

Unless someone has another suggestion, I'd guess it's a result of the different ntfs formats.
