you change the upload from your real upload speed to the upload of a 56k user
this means you should get faster downloads

yea but chnaging the upload limit doesnt actually do anything and thats why theres no point to it its basically a poor mans version of leeching in a way

throttling the upload rate lower can lead to an increase in download speed
it's possible to choke your download speed if you're uploading at too high a rate
usually this occurs on my connection (512/256k adsl) at approx 85% upload

jetje
12-18-2003, 01:30 PM
especially (A)DSL can have problems with this, so turning ul peed can help getting better dl speeds! BUT make sure you leave the torrent open after your finished, that's the only way the system will keep on working great. At least go for a 1:1 ratio. Or help out people that still haven't finished!

Awwwww, shucks :">

That 'dialup trick' seems to be rather random for me.
I haven't seen any direct correlation between setting that and getting higher download speeds.

mooseman2070
12-18-2003, 02:29 PM
same here, i got 3 d/ls goin last night w/ 3 diff connection (dialup, fast cable, and t-1) and none really got anywhere

Lenuin
12-18-2003, 03:26 PM
I think the point they're trying to make is that if you max out your upload bandwidth to somewhere other than what you're d/l from, it'll throttle your download because not enough information is being sent to that ip.
So changing the upload parameter on the client doesn't really do much unless you have several running at the same time. I know that if my u/l speed passes 20kB/s (1.5mb ADSL) I can't even surf, cause the pages time out.

12-18-2003, 04:36 PM
lol, dl is proportional to upload, the tracker thinks everyone is the same (it doesnt know what settings u use) the settings are just so 56k users dont have a very slow internet as opposed to a slow one, the tracker thinks everyone is equal in what they can upload and dl, so if u put it on 56k u will upload less, the tracker will see this so your dl will also decrese, u get the best speeds on unlimited.

my firewall slows the upload from 17 to about 13 so i still have some speed for browsing and other things. dont leech

everytime I get the same results, it always goes faster on dailup/isdn

This also works on PTC and you can just right click the file and select the upload rate. Normally 5kb gives the fastest download rate.

Well I tried it a few times again, but I do not get any such results.
Sometimes it speeds up, sometimes it slows down, more often than not nothing happens.

Also I haven't seen anything about this at any other Bittorrent site.

Perhaps it's got something to do with your specific connection/pc setup.

btw, why are you on super-seed mode when you ain't got the whole download muchspl ? not much point in that.

Super-seed mode is *NOT* recommended for general use. While it does assist in the
wider distribution of rare data, because it limits the selection of pieces a
client can downlad, it also limits the ability of those clients to download data
for pieces they have already partially retrieved. Therefore, super-seed mode is
only recommended for initial seeding servers.

its automatic when I start any torrent because I set it to be, but most shouldn't use ss mode, its for the people that seed files ;)
just distributes it better than normal mode

and the reason no one talks about it is its considered cheating, just seed afterwords
again it works, every computer/every
just do a experiment for your self, start downloading on unlimited, once you get pretty good speeds, say 5-10 minuets, drop it down to dial/up
it will work, its a givin, the only thing I can figure is your doing it on torrent with 1 seed then nothing really you can do

wienerschnitzel
12-20-2003, 08:32 AM
It only works well is there are a lot of people using the torrent and it is very well seeded. Ive gotten speeds of 340 kB with my cable connection when putting my upload at 3k. If i decided to set at at 40k (like i should) then my dl does to about 60 kB. Ive only noticed problems with the "dial up hack" when there are not a lot of people downloading or if the torrent can just been creating and is currently seeding.

I like to get the file as fast as i can copy the file and then set uploads to unlimited until i go to bed or play online games.

Yes you can, but you have to go through the consitency check on the download (takes quite a while for large files, not so surprising ^^), you better get yourself a client that supports fast resume (like azureus for one). I think there's at least one other client that lets you do that, don't remember which one at the mo tho.
