hi i got a couple questions about my hard drive.

1. what is the point of making more than 1 hard drive (does it save space, etc.) and how do you do it?

2. what is the point of making partitions and ow do you do it?

3. also when you go to my computer>right click c drive> properties>under general tab what will happen if I check the compress drive to save disk space box? should i check it?

btw i hav 80 gig hd and about 42 gigs left.

thanks alot! :)

there was a thread just like this a while ago, page 2 should have it

1>organizes files, need a special proggie, partition magic should do it
2>point is to organize files, you need a special proggie
3>why not, i mean you have more than enough space left anyways, i wouldnt check it unless i really needed space though

I'm not sure what the difference is between question #1 and #2 is....

There are several advantages to partitioning your drive.

-If you keep Windows and your programs on C:drive and you other data (music, video, porn...whatever) in a separate partition (drive), if you have to reinstall Windows at a future date all the rest of your files will be uneffected.

-By keeping your C: drive small ( say 10GB or so) you can defrag it very quickly.

-Should you contract a virus it can't infect your other data files.

- After a fresh Windows install and the installation of all your programs if you clone an image of your C: drive and stash it away, should you run into a problem you can lay the clone back into C and you're all fixed.

Making a hard drive is a bit complicated. I suggest you go and buy on instead.

2. what is the point of making partitions and ow do you do it?
To divide it into sections. Use Partition Magic.

3. also when you go to my computer>right click c drive> properties>under general tab what will happen if I check the compress drive to save disk space box? should i check it?
It will compress your data to use less space. Don't do it. It will slow your PC down.

@ clocker
When you partition it, Partition Magic will automatically assign a drive letter for you.
The whole process is actually very easy, the program will show you what your HDD will look like before you have it execute. You can create as many partitions at one time as you like. Mine was done in one shot...

You may want to practice on your old drive first if you have any doubts...

can u plz elpain 2 me all the partions you have cause i wanna know how many 2 make once iget the app. thanks!

The page file is virtual memory, which Windows will use to augment your physical RAM.
To access the settings (in XP) go to Control Panel>System>Advanced>Performance>Settings>Advanced>Virtual Memory>Settings

*whew!*

I use Partition Magic and Norton Ghost to work on my HDD. Both are available on the FastTrack network with all the appropriate ah, fixes.

Why have so many drives.. it looks like shit. And in my experience its a pain in the ass when your looking for shit.

There is no need really to do it at all.

All the advantages listed are debatable:

-You can reinstall windows (fixing a virus) without eraseing all your shit no matter were windows is installed.

-You still have to defrag the other partions so how the fuck is it faster!!

-If you contrat a virus it will be (most likly) in the partion you use the most which means you will have to clean the partion with you most valued data and hence will lose the data you use/treasure the most, but your windows installation will still be fine, big fucking deal!!

-Why bother with the cloning crap when you can reinstall windows without losing any of you data anyway!!

In conclusion:
If you partion ur drive u will find it a pain in your craper and will most likly Un-partion them, because everything is everywere and you have to look around to find anything, its easyier and just as safe and convient to keep just a C drive.

PARTITIONING SUCKS!!!

Cotton, I disagree with all of your points in principal and some I think are just plain wrong.
How do you reformat and install an OS without losing data?
The drives with your files only rarely need defragmenting since hardly anything moves in them.
Cloning a freshly installed OS with all the updates and programs installed means that you'll never have to do it again.
I fail to see how segregating your various media files into specific partitions could make them harder to find.
"Looks like shit"? Personally I don't spend all that much time admiring the My Computer page.
Maybe you do.

I find it easier to match all my socks when they come out of the dryer too.
I'm betting that you don't.

It will slow down any access to the compressed data even after the process. Don't do it unless you really have to (no more space).
